FOREST CLEARING - day "Line Count 110 Ari - 27 Elinor - 38 Mr. Lion - 20 Olive - 23 Sally - 1 Tito - 1" Open on a wide shot of a forest clearing, with ELINOR, ARI, OLIVE, and several of their classmates standing behind easels arranged in a semicircle. The kids all wear pin-on smocks or backwards old dress shirts to protect their clothes from the paint. I can see kids playing this episode. Which wouldencourage scientific exploration of nature and colors. In the center of the circle is MR. LION, the fun, energetic, expressive art teacher wearing a smock. He stands at his own easel, holding a paintbrush aloft, squinting at the easel as he plans his next brush stroke. We can’t see his easel, but we can see that he’s looking at a still-life bowl of fruit on a small table. With his fluffy mane, he even looks a bit like Bob Ross. This is a cute story. Love the connections between art and nature. Definiteily something kids can explore on their own. We were wondering if we could see the design for Mr. Lion since he's new to us. Could you share that? A few other notes below. We zoom in for a bit, then see a much closer shot of Mr. Lion, weighing his options for what to paint next. Mr. Lion Hmmm ... The next shot pans over the kids watching Mr. Lion in anticipation. He has really captivated them. ANGLE ON: Mr. Lion gets a look of determination in his eyes, then boldly slashes a few strokes across his canvas. He smiles, satisfied, then stands next to the canvas so that he’s not blocking the kids from seeing it. Mr. Lion (CONT’D) Ta-da ! ANGLE ON: We see that Mr. Lion has painted a perfect representation of the still life fruit bowl. <SFX: WOW, COOL, AMAZING WALLA> The kids applaud <SFX: applause> their approval. MR. LION (CONT’D) And THAT’S the joy of painting! ANGLE ON: The kids look impressed. ELINOR That’s great, Mr. Lion! OLIVE Yeah, your painting looks just like the bowl of fruit! Ari Mmm . It looks so real, it’s making me hungry! Olive <SFX: GIGGLES> . Ari (CONT’D) (shrugging) What? I’m a fruit bat. MR. lION Thanks, kids. And now, it’s your turn to paint! ELINOR Are we going to paint the bowl of fruit, Mr. Lion? ANGLE ON: Mr. Lion looking passionate -- he really cares about the spirit of art. MR. LION You can. Or you can paint whatever you want! Art isn’t about rules -- it’s a way to show your feelings about what you want to paint. ANGLE ON: Elinor frowns. ELINOR But I don’t know what I want to paint. He dances around and indicates/wiggles the body parts as he mentions them. Mr. LiON You will! Just think about something you love, and let your heart tell your brain, then let your brain tell your fingers, then let your fingers pick up a paintbrush and create something wonderful! The kids giggle at his antics. Elinor looks reassured. The kids start to move toward their easels, then stop when Mr. Lion holds up his hands. Mr. lion (CONT’D) But before you start! The most important thing of all, something you cannot forget! ( pause ) You need paint. Everyone come take some from the table in the middle. The class picks up their empty paint palettes and moves toward the middle table. ANGLE ON: The kids surround the table, each helping themselves to a dollop of each color from squirt bottles. <SFX: excited talking as everyone prepares to paint>. Elinor seems to be taking a larger pile of green paint than any other color. OLIVE That’s a lot of green paint, Elinor. ELINOR Yup ! Mr. Lion said to paint something we love, so I’m going to paint nature. This is very specific to the nature that they are seeing. Nature in the desert wouldn’t be green at all. Maybe they need to specify... “It definitely looks pretty green outside right now in Nature.” Or something like that. Ari (looking around) Nature does have a lot of green. The kids start walking back to their easels. ELINOR I’m going to paint the trees, and the bushes, and the leaves, and the grass.. . Maybe add a "(looking around)" to this line? ARI Yup , you’re definitely going to need a lot of green. Olive What about you, Ari? Ari Well, I love fruit, so that’s what I want to paint. But...Mr . Lion already painted that bowl of fruit. ELINOR I think that’s okay, Ari. You can paint something even if someone else already did. OLIVE I’m glad you said that, Elinor. Because I love nature, too, and I also want to paint the forest. ELINOR That’s great! We can both be nature painters! OLIVE Awesome! Ari (striking a determined pose) It’s time...to make art! CROSSFADE TO: 2. Ext. FOREST CLEARING - A FEW MINUTES LATER The kids stand back at their easels, and we see that the whole class is excitedly working away, though we don’t yet see what’s on their easels. Mr. Lion walks behind the kids, reacting to their paintings in progress. Gael is not really a recurring, try Javier, or Mehdi or Bodie? Mr. Lion agree->. I also think it might havenegative cultural meanings We aren't sure that kids will understand when Mr. Lion says, “Crackerjack work, Ari!”? Wow, Sally, look at that sunrise! ... Gael, I love those melting clocks, how unusual! ... Crackerjack work, Ari! That apple looks tasty enough to eat, but I’m not going to, because it’s a painting. ANGLE ON: Elinor and Olive paint side by side, but with their easels angled slightly so that they can’t see what the other is working on. Olive is a virtuoso, painting with a brush in her hand and another in her trunk at the same time. I think Olive would only use her trunk, not her hands ELINOR (singing to herself as she paints) I’m painting a scene. I’m using the green. And now some blue. ( to Olive) How ‘bout you? Olive giggles. Elinor turns her canvas around so that Olive can see it: She has painted a kid-quality landscape with green grass, trees, and a blue sky with a yellow sun. It’s clearly unfinished, though, with a large portion of one side unpainted. After Elinor turns the canvas around, add a line to make it clearer: "What do you think, Olive?" OLIVE Though we love Bob Ross, we'd prefer not to use the phrase "happy trees" which we know is something he always said. We'd like to avoid worrying about permissions. That’s really nice, Elinor. Those look like happy trees. ELINOR They are happy! Mr. Lion is right -- i t’s so fun to paint what you love. She moves slightly so that she can see Olive’s canvas, then gives a little gasp. ANGLE ON: We see Olive’s canvas. She’s still working on it, but what she’s painted so far looks like a higher-resolution version of Elinor’s painting. The tree trunks look more defined, individual branches are visible, the clouds have texture. ELINOR (CONT’D) Olive, that’s beautiful! Delete "little" and replace "you" with "I" OLIVE (alternating squinting at her painting and looking above/beyond the canvas) Thanks! I’m trying to paint all of the little things you notice in nature. She leans back for a moment and assesses her canvas. "Add a ""Hmm"" at the beginning of this line? In description below, just make it her trunk?" OLIVE (CONT’D) Needs more birds. With a double flourish of the brushes in her hand and trunk, she expertly adds a few birds to the sky. ANGLE ON: Elinor looks back at her own painting, a little discouraged. Move the sentence description above this line to after line 34, and after the first sentence "Olive keeps..." ELINOR Your painting is so good. It looks ...real. OLIVE (with a shrug) You think so? Thanks, Elinor! Olive keeps painting happily. Ari leans in, holding his paintbrush. "Add a line for Elinor before this line, something like: ""Sigh... I wish mine looked real, too."" Then for line 35, make it so that Ari already painted the robots, then kids at home can see it when he mimes the robots: ""It doesn't have to look real, Elinor. See, I added some robots to my painting."" Then, show Ari's painting before line 36." Ari It doesn’t have to look real, Elinor! In fact, when I’m done painting the bowl of fruit, I might add a few robots. He returns to his painting. Ari (CONT’D) (robot voice) ROBOTS EATING FRUIT. DOES NOT COMPUTE. If you add the sigh line as noted in 35, then you can delete this line. ELINOR I know it doesn’t have to look real . But still. Mr. Lion walks over, having heard Elinor’s disappointment. Make first sentence "Elinor, there isn't a good or bad way to make art. It's just your own way of showing... Etc." Mr. LiON Elinor, a rt isn’t “good” or “bad” -- it’s your own way of showing what you feel about what you’re painting. Elinor looks reassured. Replace "I need" with "I'm going" ELINOR Thanks, Mr. Lion. Okay, I need to make my painting really show how much I love nature! ANGLE ON a closer shot of Elinor; she looks determined. She touches her brush to her palette. ELINOR (CONT’D) (singing again) I’m painting a scene. I’m using the green. When she says the word “green,” she puts the brush to her canvas, attempting to add leaves to a bare tree trunk -- but nothing comes off of her brush. ELINOR (CONT’D) Hmm. She picks up her palette, and we can see that she’s out of green paint (i.e., it’s in its usual spot in a rainbow of paint blobs, but there’s only a tiny smidgen left on the palette). ELINOR (CONT’D) Uh-oh. I’m out of green paint. ANGLE ON: Elinor carries her palette to the table where Mr. Lion keeps the paint bottles. She picks up the green paint bottle and tries to squeeze a dollop onto her palette. ELINOR (CONT’D) (trying her song again) I’m getting more green ... On the word “green,” she gives the bottle a squeeze, but nothing comes out. ELINOR (CONT’D) I’m getting more...green ! This time, on the word “green,” she gives the bottle an extra hard squeeze. It makes a <SFX: spluttering bottle sound>, but again nothing comes out. ELINOR (CONT’D) Hmmm...we’re out of green paint. Ari comes up behind her, carrying his own palette. ARI Elinor, can you please hand me the blue paint ? I added a bunch of robots to my fruit picture, but now it needs a blue dragon. Elinor picks up the bottle of blue paint, but before she hands it to Ari, she realizes it’s also light and gives it a test squeeze. ELINOR It looks like we’re out of blue paint, too. ARI We’re OUT? Olive approaches with her palette. OLIVE What about brown? I need more brown paint for the tree trunks. Elinor picks up the bottle of brown paint and tries to squeeze it onto Olive’s palette. OLIVE (CONT’D) There’s no more brown paint? A few more kids start to show up, hoping to add paint to their palettes but finding none. <WALLA: hey, we’re out of paint/what’s going on?/ but I need more red/etc.> Mr. Lion approaches, and Ari steps out to talk to him. ARI Mr. Lion? I t looks like we’re out of paint. Do you have more? Elinor hands a bottle to Mr. Lion, and he shakes and squeezes it himself. Nothing comes out. Mr. Lion Hmm... He grabs bottle after bottle, squeezing each. Replace "I guess not" with "It looks like we ran out" MR. Lion (CONT’D) Oh no! I thought I had brought enough paint, but I guess not. Replace "will I" with "am I going to" SALLY (holding up an unfinished painting of a tree) But how will I finish my painting of my favorite tree? Same here Tito (holding up a painting of an adult female mouse in the pose of Whistler’s mother) And how will I finish painting my mom? Maybe more natural like this: "I'm so sorry kids. We'll have to wait until next week to finish your paintings. I'll be sure to bring more paint then." MR. LION We’ll just have to wait until next week. I’ll bring more paint then. I’m sorry, kids. The kids walk sadly back to their easels. ElINOR Now what do we do? It’s an art emergency! "After 56 and after moving 57 and 58 to before 56, I think we need a little moment to drive the disappointment home. Something like: Elinor: Aw, I really wanted to finish my nature painting. Olive: Me too. Ari: Yeah, now we'll have to wait a whole week. (robot voice) I AM SO SAD, WHERE IS THE BLUE DRAGON? BEEP BOOP Then as he does the robot motions he trips." Ari (overly dramatic) An art-mergency ! He gestures grandly with his hands, and his melodrama distracts him from where he’s walking . He trips over an easel and falls into the grass. ArI (CONT’D) I’m okay, I’m okay. Elinor <SFX: GIGGLES> at his antics and helps him stand and b r ush off his smock, but then she notices that some of the green stains on his white smock aren’t brushing off. ELINOR Huh. Ari, your smock has green stains on it. replace "clean" with "from getting paint on them" ARI (noticing the stains) Sure. That’s what it’s for -- to keep my clothes clean! OLIVE But these stains weren’t here a minute ago. I think we can delete this line ELINOR And we’re out of green paint. Delete this line, too. OLIVE Where did the stains come from? The kids look around for a moment, and then Elinor looks closely at Ari’s smock. She picks a broken blade of grass off of it and holds the grass up. CU: We can see that it’s vibrant green. Add a bit more to this one: "I don't think these stains came from the paint. I think they're from the grass." ELINOR They’re from the grass. ANGLE ON: Olive examines the stain, too. OLIVE You mean like the stains you get on your pants sometimes when you’re playing in the grass? ELINOR Yes. Elinor has an idea. Move the "That's so interesting" to the end of line 67 ELINOR (CONT’D) That is SO INTERESTING. I wonder... Elinor rubs the grass onto a blank part of her canvas. Lines 69-74 feel a little clunky. On 69, Replace "it works" with "look!", replace "onto" with "on", delete the third sentence. ELINOR (CONT’D) Maybe the line can come from Mr. Lion? Elinor saying “Sometimes there’s more than one way to solve a problem” feels really adult. Wow, it works! The green from the grass gets onto my canvas. Sometimes there’s more than one way to solve a problem. Change this one to "It's like you're painting with it." OLIVE Maybe we can use the grass to finish our paintings! Have Ari try it: he picks up a leaf or some grass shoots, and gets some green on his canvas, then says in this line "Whoa, cool" Ari Awesome! Move the idea here, replace this line with: "Gasp! Maybe we can use it to finish our painting!" OLIVE That takes care of the green. But what about the other colors? "Change to something like, ""We can use grass to paint the grass!"" Then add a line for Ari after this: ""Yeah, but that only gives us green. How do we paint the other colors?""" ELINOR Good question, Olive. Elinor looks around. Change to something like, "Hmmm... I wonder what else we can use to paint with around here? (beat) We need more observations!" ELINOR (CONT’D) What else can we use? I know! Let’s go look for other colors in nature! CROSSFADE TO: 3. ext. FOREST - A FEW MINUTES LATER Elinor, Olive, and Ari explore the Edges of the forest within sight of the painting area. Olive finds a flower with yellow petals. "I think in this bit here, we don't want the kids to go too far. The edge of the forest should be close to where the easels are. Also, I think we want the kids to experiment as they explore, otherwise it's a bit awkward. Maybe have Elinor grab her canvas and take it to the edge of the forest with them? Don't think we want Olive to pluck a flower. Can you write that she finds it on the floor? Maybe add a description that Olive hands the flower to Elinor and she uses it to paint a streak of yellow on her canvas. Then Elinor says, ""That works!""" OLIVE Look! Maybe we can use the petals from this flower to make yellow. Ari pulls two handfuls of dirt from the ground. Here again try a description that Ari tries smearing some dirt and mud on the canvas as Elinor holds it up. Then a "That works too." from Elinor. ARI (holding up one handful) This dirt is brown...(he holds up the other handful)...and this dirt is more like orange. Elinor holds up a small, white rock. "Try also here having Elinor draw some faint highlights in white on her painting with the rock. Also, I am not sure we need so much story added on the blueberry. I think we can delete the description below this line." ELINOR And this rock is like chalk - we could use this for white! They all add what they’re holding to a growing pile of colorful natural bits. Then replace this line with, "It works too!" OLIVE (surveying the bounty they’ve all collected) I think we’ve found every color. replace with "We can paint with nature." Ari Not every color - we didn’t find blue. How will I paint my blue dragon? Then replace with "Let's go tell Mr. Lion!" ELINOR (looking up) I see a lot of blue...but it’s the sky. Delete this one OLIVE We can’t wipe the sky on our paintings. Delete this one. ELINOR Hmmm , you’re right. Don’t worry, Ari. I’m sure we’ll think of something. 4. EXT. FOREST CLEARING - A FEW MINUTES LATER Elinor, Olive, and Ari run over to Mr. Lion, carrying multicolored plants, rocks, dirt, and berries. They’re so excited! ELINOR Mr. Lion! Guess what! We can finish our paintings after all! ari (pointing to the grass stain still on his smock) I had a grass stain on my smock, and Elinor thought that maybe we could paint with colors from nature! OLIVE (indicating the objects in their hands) We found all kinds of colorful plants and things. Maybe some of them will work! Delete this line, too. Ari Maybe say “We found all kinds of colorful plants and nature things.” (specifying that the “things” are from nature) We found every color...except blue. "Change to something like ""What a great idea, kids! You're right, there are no rules in art. Not even that you have to use paint. Then add a line for Elinor, something like, ""We can use Nature to paint Nature."" Then add a line for Ari: Wait, I still need blue for my dragon"" Then continue to Ari looking off camera/gasping then 88." Mr. Lion What a creative idea: using nature to paint nature! Ari looks off-camera and gasps. ArI <GASP!> I’ll be right back. He rushes away. Mr. Lion Another inspiration! Over near the paint station, Ari picks up a bl ue berry from the still life fruit bowl, then rushes back. Ari Mr. Lion, can I use this bl ue berry? Mr. Lion Sure, but what for? I think we can delete this line ARI Well, one time I sat on a berry by mistake, and it stained my pants. I think we can delete this line Olive (completing his thought) So maybe you can use fruit to paint fruit! I think we can delete this line Ari Or... Ari makes a few motions on his canvas with the bl ue berry, then steps back. I think we can delete this line ArI (CONT’D) It’s more like purple than blue... ANGLE ON: We see the canvas, where Ari has used the berry to draw a wide-mouthed blueberry coloured dragon set to devour the fruit bowl. I think we can delete this line Ari (CONT’D) But it’s still AWESOME! I used fruit to paint a dragon! Change this line to "Wonderful! Let's all use the colors of Nature!" and go to the song Mr. Lion Very clever , Ari! You know, back before you could buy paint in a bottle, cave dwellers used to paint using nature! A THOUGHT BUBBLE appears next to Mr. Lion, illustrating the following as he says it. "Delete this line. Not sure the cave dweller story is helping us. I think we can omit it for now and jump straight into the song here. Delete first sentence of the description below this line." Mr. Lion (CONT’D) They’d crush up rocks and charcoal to make pictures inside their caves, and we know this because some of the pictures are still there, thousands of years later. The THOUGHT BUBBLE disappears. Mr. Lion leads a song as the kids experiment with plants and soil on their paintings. Scenes during the song include: Kids run excitedly from plant to plant. Olive tries plants one at a time, then records the results in her notebook. Elinor uses grass to spread more green across her canvas. Tito Mouse hauls a giant (to him) bundle of flower s to his canvas. The Goat Twins paint pictures of each other in unison. Sally Beaver thinks while chewing on the back of her paintbrush, then realizes she’s shredded it. Mr. Lion dances; his dancing looks like meditative tai chi. SONG: MR. LION: The world is full of colors that can all be found Hanging from the trees or growing in the ground. Put down your pen and pencil, ‘cause here’s the greatest part: Nature is a work of art! ELINOR: A berry’s blue -- OLIVE: The grass is green -- ARI: The dirt is brown -- MR. LION: And hello! The flowers all around are orange, pink, and yellow. ELINOR: With berries in your painting, instead of in a tart, Nature is a work of art! ARI: You don’t always need to buy things in stores. ELINOR: You might find them if you just look outdoors. OLIVE: We’ll figure out the colors and write them in a chart. ELINOR AND ARI: Nature is a work of art! MR. LION (slowly, operatically): You see it all around you; you feel it in your heaaaaaart ! ALL (happily shouting, resuming tempo): Nature is a work of art! END SONG. ANGLE ON: The class smiles at their paintings; they’re all pleased with how they turned out. Song - If we don’t actually show a chart being created visually, then we would replace the line “and write them in a chart”. This doesn't seem like it would be chart anyway – sounds more like a table. ANGLE ON: Elinor considers her canvas; Mr. Lion stands behind her. She’s holding a dandelion and weighing how to represent it in her painting. She’s almost done, but not quite. She holds the head of a dandelion. Not sure Mr. Lion should interrupt her like that. Replace this line with "Now how do I paint this flower?" Then replace the description below with something like, "Mr. Lion comes up behind her." ELINOR It just needs one more thing. She reaches to rub it on the canvas, but Mr. Lion gently places a finger in her way. Change to something like, "Remember Elinor, there are no rules in art. Maybe what you need is... Glue!" Mr. Lion M aybe you don’t need paint. And maybe you don’t need colors from nature, either. Maybe what you need -- is glue! He dramatically reveals that he’s holding a bottle of white glue. ELINOR <SFX: Gasp!> Yes! He hands Elinor the bottle. She smiles, then puts a dab of glue on her canvas and attaches the dandelion head as a bright, yellow sun in the sky . It looks great! Elinor steps back to look at her work. Olive and Ari come over to look at it as well. OlIVE Wow. A picture OF nature, BY nature, IN nature, made WITH nature. ARI The dandelion is the sun -- what a cool idea! ELINOR I love how my painting turned out. Like you said, Mr. Lion, it shows how much I love nature -- because it’s beautiful, and interesting, and full of surprises. maybe "share with others" would work? MR. lion We like the line about expressing yourself but we're not sure if there's enough definition for kids to understand what it means. See? I told you not to worry, Elinor. Art isn’t about right or wrong, it’s just a way to express yourself. Maybe add a kicker after this line. Ari could say, "(robot voice) MY ROBOTS AGREE. BEEP BOOP". Then we zoom out as they giggle and finish their paintings. ELINOR Nature makes it easy to express myself -- it’s so colorful! AS WE ZOOM OUT: Ari sticks two berries to be the robot’s eyes - Olive then grabs a few flowers and glues them below the tree in her painting, then we see the whole scene, with kids painting, chatting, and having a good time, all painting plants and dirt .
