There are a few places where I wondered if the explicit learning sentences were what a kid would say but I think providing the learning opportunities outwieghed the slightly formal sentence structures. I'm happy to discuss that more if needed. Really cute! This one will be a surefire hit with the kids in our audience (who, if they're anything like Natalie's son, are likely bubble-obsessed). ON: ARI is trudging along, dragging a large branch behind him. We can see ELINOR, hopping around in the background, looking at different natural things with interest, she keeps hopping around until just after line 13 . A ri passes OLIVE who is busy piling a low (ankle-height) row of leaves in a circle on the ground for the walls of her leaf house (mostly in her imagination). Olive (good-naturedly) Careful, Ari. You almost dragged your branch through the wall of my leaf house. She points at the leaves. Ari Whoops. Sorry about that, Olive. I need it for my stick house. I’ll just get this out of...uugh, urgh. He tries to back up with his branch, but it’s awkward. Olive (giggling) You could just use the front door. Olive smiles, gesturing to a gap in the leaves. Ari Oh, good idea . Ari drags his branch over and knocks on the pretend door. Ari (CONT’D) Knock, knock, knock. OLIVE (sing-song) Who is it? After line 7 I was anticipating a punch line to the Knock Knock joke. Ari It’s me, Ari. Olive opens the pretend door. Fun pretend play overall. Nice :) OLIVE (making door sound) Rrrr. Oh, hi, Ari! How nice to see you. ARI Nice to see you too, Olive. Would you mind if I dragged my branch through your leaf house? OlIVE Not at all. Let me open the back door for you. Rrrrrr. Olive pantomimes opening the pretend back door (another gap in the leaves) and Ari drags his stick through. Ha! ARI Love what you’ve done with the place. OlIVE Thanks . Stop by any time. WIDEN: Ari sets his branch in place close to where Elinor is looking around. Ari My stick house is gonna be AWESOME! Have you figured out what you’re going to make your house with, Elinor? Their curious friend points to her latest discovery. ELINOR Look! Bubbles... SCIENCE CU: The kids gaze at a glob of bubbly foam resting on a nearby branch. OLIVE How did bubbles get on a tree? Typo: its ARI Maybe the plant’s washing it's hands. Feels like "Or maybe it's taking a bubble bath" might be an easier leap for kids to make (over bubbles = tooth-brushing) ELINOR Or brushing its teeth? Just at that moment the bubbles wiggle a little. Ari <GASP!> Did those bubbles just WIGGLE?? The bubbles move again. OLIVE How can bubbles move on their own? They aren’t alive, are they? ELINOR We need MORE observations. Olive takes Elinor’s magnifying glass out of her satchel and hands it to her. Who’s ready for some snacks? <SFX: EXCITED YEAH WALLA> The kids run, hop and flutter OS. 2. EXT. ELINOR’S BACK YARD -- DAY The kids rush into the yard. ElINOR Mom! Mom! You’ll never guess what we found! Ranger Rabbit has laid out the snacks (veggies sticks, sandwiches and water in cups with paper straws). Ranger RABBIT Something exciting, I can tell. Earlier, Elinor said “tree” (not plant). Should we be consistent? ElINOR There were these bubbles on a plant and then we saw a BUG inside the bubbles! They dive in and start <SFX: MUNCHING> on the snacks. Ari <SFX: SLUUUURPS> his water through a straw. ArI (to himself) Mmmmmm. Slurpy . RANGER RABBIT Sounds like you found a spittle bug, Elinor. ELINOR A spittle bug? Ranger Rabbit I t’s a bug that makes itself a little house of bubbles and hides inside. ELINOR Yes ! We saw the spittle bug hiding . (To herself) Whoa, wait... I wonder why it does that? Ari Maybe it’s eating the bubbles in there . OLIVE Maybe it’s playing hide and seek . "Typo: its Also, can you replace ""There's all kinds of ways..."" with ""Animals use all kinds of ways...""" RanGER RABBIT Close, Olive. The spittle bug makes it’s bubble house to hide from creatures like birds and lizards. There’s all kinds of ways to stay safe in Nature. Should we add “...that might want to eat it” after “birds and lizards”? This might be helpful so viewers understand the next line. (she picks up a tray) Enjoy your snacks. Ranger Rabbit heads back into the house. ELINOR Wow… A bubble house… <GASP!> I just had a bubbly idea! I’m gonna make my house out of ...BUBBLES! J ust like the spittle bug! ArI Cool! A bubble house ! I want one too! OlIVE Yeah, me too! (beat) Uh, but...how do we make a bubble house? This is nit-picky but it feels a little obvious for Elinor to say "First, we need bubbles." Might feel more active/exploratory if she said something along the lines of, "I don't know, but let's get my bubble stuff and see if we can figure it out" ELINOR First, we need bubbles. Let’s go get my bubble stuff. Elinor and Olive run off to get the bubble stuff, and Ari stays behind to take one last <SFX: SLUUURRP> of his water through his straw. BUBBLE WIPE TO: 3. EXT. ELINOR’S BACK YARD – MINUTES LATER Elinor and Olive come running out of the house with a small pail of soap and water and bubble wands. ElinOR Here we go. ARI Uhmmmm. I don’t see any bubbles. Olive puts down the pail. Maybe use the word Liquid instead of goopy for a more accurate learning experience OLIVE We have to make them, Ari . (she gestures to the pail) Feels a little like Olive is talking down to Ari. Do we need Ari to be confused about why there aren't any bubbles yet, or can we just have them get down to the business of bubble-making? See, we poured goopy soap into this water, now we mix it up . Elinor stirs it with her bubble wand. ELINOR Then you dip this bubble wand in and BLOW! Elinor <SFX: BLOWS GENTLY>. Out pops a bubble. ARI (amazed) Cooooool! OliVE Can I try? ElINOR Sure! Olive grabs the wand with her trunk and <SFX: BLOWS HARD> and fails. This is great because learning to successfully blow bubbles is a preschool right of passage and makes parents happy that they don't have to do it all the time. ELINOR (CONT’D) Try blow ing a little more gently. Olive <SFX: BLOWS GENTLY> - and then blows a bubble. Ari That’s a n AWESOME bubble, Olive! The kids watch it float away. OlIVE Thanks, Ari. Your turn . Ari <SFX: BLOWS> a bubble. ARI I did it! I made a bubble ! Maybe better as "But how do we make a whole house out of bubbles?" ElinOR (thinking) But how do we make a whole bubble house. (figures it out) Her second line here is one of those lines that I love the learning message but the words seem a little formal. I'm OK with it though... Agree with Sara's note -- a little too precocious. Let’s think up some ideas and try them out. So they dive in. BUBBLE WIPE TO: THE BUBBLE SONG The kids are running around blowing bubbles as they sing . "In the first description after the first verses, we should describe the problem as not just that the bubbles pop, but that it's really hard to catch bubbles and make them stick together. Have you tried it? It's kinda hard! Show the kids trying to catch bubbles and having trouble sticking them together. In the second spoken section, can you add ""I know!"" to the beginning of Ari's line? (Or would that break your rhythym?) Also, typo on ""humongous"" On the biggest bubble possible, maybe add a qualifier that ""it's not that big"" (It's really hard to blow a very big bubble)" Elinor, olive and ari (singing) Bubble, bubble, bubble, We’re gonna blow some bubbles. Elinor: To build a Bubble House, Olive: Like a Spittle Bug does, Ari: And get inside! ELINOR Agree w/Sara Ohhh. ArI What do you mean, Mrs. Rabbit? RANGER RABBIT Sometimes to learn from nature, it's important to observe HOW an animal does something, not just WHAT they do. Nice :) ELINOR I never thought about it that way before. We saw the bubble house that the spittle bug made, but we never saw the spittle bug MAKING the bubble house. (energized) We need even MORE observations! 5. EXT. FOREST NEAR ELINOR’S - DAY The kids go back to the spittle bug tree. ElinOR There’s the bubble house. ArI But where’s the spittle bug? I think we usually give bugs a masculine gender. Do we want to give this one female pronouns? Alternately, stick to "it"? OlIVE He’s probably inside. Might be better to say “Let’s be really, really quiet and watch closely” (since technically we can’t watch quietly since our eyes don’t make noise – trying not to mix up senses) ElINOR Let’s watch really, really quietly. ARI Right. We don’t want to scare him again. ECU: At that moment the Spittle Bug comes out of the bubbles. Ari (CONT’D) (excited, forgetting) There he IS! Elinor and Olive good-naturedly <SFX: SHHH> Ari. ARI (CONT’D) (whispering) Whoops, sorry. OLIVE Let’s see what he does. Olive takes out the magnifying glass. MAGNIFYING POV: The Spittle Bug is blowing into the goopy liquid. NOTE the spittle bug blows the bubbles out of his abdomen rear. OlIVE (CONT’D) Look! He’s making bubbles for his bubble house . ArI But how? He doesn’t have a bubble wand or anything. SCIENCE ECU : The spittle bug blowing bubbles - we see the bubbles appearing one by one. Might be more accurate to say “It blows right into the goopy liquid to make the bubbles.” (will match Line 86 better) ElinoR Ooooh. The spittle bug doesn't blow bubbles into the air and then stick them together. It blows tiny bubbles right into the goopy liquid! Might say, “…makes lots of really tiny bubbles already stuck together” ARI Whoa...foamy! OLIVE That makes lots of really tiny bubbles, and they don’t all pop when it crawls in side ... BACK ON: Elinor, she has an idea. Elinor (the penny drops) Wait a minute. That’s IT! Come on . 6. EXT. ELINOR’S BACK YARD - DAY Elinor, Ari and Olive run back into the yard. RaNGER RABBIT Well, what did you learn? ELINOR The spittle bug makes lots and lots of really tiny bubbles. Can we confirm that this is behavior of a male spittlebug (vs. a female spittlebug) before we commit to using "he" as the pronoun? Ari But he doesn’t use a bubble wand. OLIVE He blows right INTO his bubble stuff. RaNGER RABBIT Huh. That is really interesting. ElINOR Right. But HOW are we going to blow air into OUR bubble stuff. OLIVE Good question. Hmmmmm. ArI All this talking about bubbles has made me thirsty. Ari finishes his drink. <SFX: Sluuuuurrrrp…> then sighs <SFX: AHHHH WALLA> which makes the water <SFX: BUBBLE> a bit. Ari notices Elinor watching. ARI (CONT’D) What? Elinor smile s . ElINOR Ari, may I borrow your straw, please. Ari hands Elinor the straw. She puts it in the bubble stuff. Ari Wait, Elinor! Don’t drink the bubble stuff. It’s SOAP! BLECH!! OLIVE I don’t think she’s going to, Ari. Elinor takes a <SFX: BREATH> and then starts to blow air into the soapy mixture. <SFX: BLUB, BLUB, BLUB> This sounds a bit adult. How does Olive know this so surely? Maybe it’s more like an observation? “It looks like she’s using the straw to blow air into the bubble stuff…” Also wondering if this could be Ari's observation? It's another moment where Olive is explaining something to him. I want to make sure their dynamic isn't always that Ari thinks of something silly, then Olive corrects him. OLIVE (CONT’D) Elinor's using the straw to blow air into the bubble stuff, just like the spittle bug did. ECU: A few bubbles froth up. OLIVE (CONT’D) It’s working! ArI Let’s help. Ari and Olive grab straws and join Elinor taking <SFX: BREATHS> and then blowing into the frothy liquid. Bubbles <SFX: BUBBLE UP> and over the edge of the container and start gathering on the ground. OLIVE Wow! Look at those bubbles! We can definitely make a bubble house like that. Keep going! Finally, they make a REALLY big mountain of suds! ARI Bubble-o-rama!! Now THAT’s a Bubble House. OLIVE Try to get inside, Elinor. Elinor crawls inside the mound of bubbles and pokes her face out the front. ELINOR <GASP!> We DID it! Olive and Ari high-five <SFX: CELEBRATION WALLA>, then Elinor’s Mom joins them. Ranger RABBIT Wow, that’s some impressive bubble building. But where’s Elinor? Elinor calls from her bubble house! ELINOR Here I am! RANGER RABBIT (laughing) I didn’t see you at first. How did you make such a great Bubble house? ELINOR W e blew air INTO the bubble stuff, just like the spittle bug did. OlIVE And made a whole bunch of SMALL bubbles. I love the explicitness of this learning. We might need to say "bug in nature" instead of just Nature so that kids make the connection stronger. ARI <--Yes It's like you said, Mrs. Rabbit. We looked closely to learn HOW nature does it, and that's how we got the idea. RaNGER RABBIT Nice work, scientists. ELINOR Thanks Mom. Logline: Inspired by a spittle-bug Elinor, Olive and Ari decide to make a bubble house, but it’s not as easy as they thought.. Curriculum Goals: · LS5 .
