The general structure is good, but could use some tweaks. Top notes:

1) As Anne and Natalie suggest, let’s make sure the emotional through-line for Elinor is well established and comes through, and that the environmental message shines at the end.

2) Below are tweaks to hopefully get us there, and to make the pace a little more even (right now it feels a little rushed at the beginning, and sloggy in the middle), and also to make the episode feel a little more kid-led. See each scene below for notes.

3) Let’s aim for a rough page budget for the episode like this:
- Kids run out of paper: 1.5 pages
- Kids check in with Mom: 1 page
- Kids at Mr. Hippo Store: 2 pages
- Kids at Mr. Beaver’s workshop: 3 pages
- Kids at Farmer Bear: 4 pages
- Kids back at the house: 1 page
- Interconnective tissue: 0.5 Page
(not exact figures, of course. just roughly)

4) Also, I know this is a tight structure and with LOTS of info to convey, but don’t forget to have fun with it and the characters on your next pass. Add a moment or two of physical humor, maybe at the store and/or the factory, and some cute flourishes in or in-between scenes. It’s probably ok if we go to 13.5 pages.

Let’s have them drawing on a small kid table that they set up outside under the tree, and all three should be drawing and using up paper.

They should be spinning their tale, with all three of them using up paper: Elinor changes story direction, gets a new paper. Olive messes up a little what she’s drawing, gets a new sheet. Ari changes his mind about a detail, gets another sheet. Each time, they should deposit the used paper in a little bin or pile on the floor, and we should see the bin getting fuller.

It’s nice how the story that the kids tell in their book talks about saving trees, but maybe it could be a little more intentional about it to convey Elinor’s affection for trees, and set up the payoff at the end of the episode.

Maybe you can go back to the giant idea (dragons and fire burning seem a bit scary), and Ari is saying that the giant is about to stomp through the forest. But then Elinor says, “Wait! What about the trees!” So they change direction and add a hero character (maybe not a knight, since that is obscure for our age group) that shows up and tells the giant to stop or tickles the giant’s foot (or something) and then saves the forest.

The main point in this first scene (besides establishing that they need paper) is to show that they love trees, but they don’t realize yet that paper comes from trees. I think we can spend a bit more than 1 page on this set up.

This scene is cute, but feel that it could use:

- A joke or something funny with Mr. Hippo at the top. Who is Mr. Hippo, what’s his life philosophy and what is his store about?
 Make it fun.

- In line 27, he could explain a little more how things work. He could say something like, “Oh no. Stores usually don’t make the things they sell. Everything you see in a store was made by someone else, and then they bring it here.” Kids react (Ooohhh). Elinor asks, “So who makes the paper, Mr. Hippo?” Mr. Hippo replies that Mr. Beaver makes the paper, so he needs to ask him to bring more. The kids have an idea: let’s go to Mr. Beaver and get paper from him!

- Maybe add a funny physical humor moment somewhere? Ari knocking some things from a shelf or a stack or something? We can go up to 2 pages on this scene.

Also a cute scene, and well thought out in terms of the process of paper making. I think we might be spending a bit too much time here on the details of papermaking, though. Suggest cutting this section down to about 3 pages. A few tweaks:

- I think the kids should come in already knowing Mr. Beaver makes the paper (they got that from Mr. Hippo), and the curiosity here is more about how Mr. Beaver makes the paper.

- Let’s condense the demonstration a bit more. The main thing is for kids to make the connection that wood turns into paper by chopping it up and pressing it. Some of the details around that can be glossed or condensed.

- I think it’s ok to have some things be electric (like the wood chopper), but keep the mixing and pressing of the pulp manual. Reading it now, a hand crank seems like it would be really hard to chop up wood.

- Maybe spend a little less time on the squeezing of water and more time on the kids being amazed at seeing paper made in front of their eyes. It should be really cool for them to see where a sheet of paper comes from.

- At the end, let’s recap the important point: that everyday objects come from somewhere and that they are made of something (a resource). In this case, paper is made out of wood.

- At the end, I don’t think we need Mr. Beaver to go with them to the farm. Have the kids get the idea to go get wood from Farmer Bear and off they go!

- Maybe there's opportunity in this scene for some physical humor? Ari and some wood pulp? Olive and a wet paper sheet?"</Text>

Also super cute and great dialogue, and fun song. Can we try some tweaks:

- Don’t think we need Mr. Beaver at the farm. Maybe the kids’ plan was just to carry a few small logs back with them?

- It might help the emotional arc of Elinor and the environmental message of this episode to flip the structure of this scene more like this:

1) The kids arrive at the farm, and find Farmer Bear planting some trees. They explain what they are after, and that they need some wood. Maybe Ari thinks wood grows on trees, like a fruit.

2) Farmer Bear explains that, actually, she’s planting wood right now! She explains that wood comes from trees. Trees are cut down and that’s where wood comes from. She also explains that for every tree she cuts down, she plants TWO new ones so there will be plenty of trees in the future.

3) The kids are amazed and recap what they learned about where paper comes from. They are excited to learn this, although it looks like Elinor might have some lingering thoughts. Farmer Bear confirms their recap of where paper comes from and SHE (Farmer Bear) sings the song (not the kids).

4) At the end of the song, Farmer Bear gets ready to chop down a tree so the kids can have the wood. But, Elinor realizes something: she had never thought that paper comes from trees. It’s good to have paper, and it’s great that Farmer Bear plants two trees for every one she harvests, but... maybe there are other things we can do to make sure we have enough trees in the forest. She leads her friends out of the farm before Farmer Bear cuts the tree down.

5) Back home, Elinor reveals her idea of reusing the back of the papers they had discarded in the bin. So they can save the trees! They finish their story (and show mom the book?)."</Text>
