EWW102B_OwlGirl_ASRECORD_25Jan19 -- Script Report ELINOR Hmmmmmm . ELINOR ( CONT’D ) Mmm , that’s not it either... OLIVE Elinor? Are you coming? ELINOR Right behind you, Olive! ELINOR ( CONT’D ) Ooooh . OLIVE I can’t wait for school tomorrow! ARI Me too, Olive! ( thinks about it) Wait, why? OLIVE ( laughing ) It’s Costume Day, Ari ! ARI Yes! Costume Day! We get to wear a costume to school tomorrow! Remember last year? ARI ( CONT’D ) I was a baseball AND bat! Get it? Because I AM a bat? OLIVE I remember. ( giggles ) It was so funny. ARI This year, I’m going to be something SUPER cool and MYSTERIOUS. ARI ( CONT’D ) ( laughing ) Whooops , careful Elinor!! ELINOR Sorry, Ari . ARI So what are you going to dress up as, Olive? OLIVE I’ve been working on my costume for DAYS! I’m going as something I LOVE! ARI Let me guess: a banana? OLIVE A BANANA??? (laughs) No... although I DO love bananas. You’ll just have to wait and see! ELINOR Sigh... ARI Hey, Elinor, what are YOU going to be for Costume Day? ELINOR (a little frustrated) I just don’t know! OLIVE Uh oh. ELINOR I’ve been looking EVERYWHERE, but I haven’t found the right idea for my costume yet. ARI Huh. ELINOR I want it to be something reeeeaaally interesting.... (she looks around) But, I don’t know what, and Costume Day is TOMORROW! OLIVE We’ll help you look for ideas, Elinor. ARI You bet - just call me Ari the idea-finder! ELINOR (relieved) Aww, thank you! The kids look under a bush. OLIVE Nothing under here. They check out a hole in the trunk of a large, old tree. ARI Nothing in here. They look behind the tree. ELINOR Nothing behind here! ARI Nope, nothing I don’t always s-... (he looks up) Yikes! ELINOR (in awe) <GASP!> Wooooooooow! OLIVE It’s an OWL! ARI I’ve never seen an Owl this close before. ELINOR What’s it doing? OLIVE It’s not moving. ARI I’ll take a closer look! ARI (CONT’D) (comically loud whisper) Its eyes are closed! (a beat later) I think it’s sleeping! ELINOR Sleeping? In the middle of the day? OLIVE Maybe it’s taking a nap. ARI Phew! I could use nap. AND a snack. ELINOR Let’s wait for the Owl to wake up! I want to see it fly - WHOOSH! OLIVE Ok, let’s wait. ARI (munching) What? I’m hungry! ELINOR Is the owl going to sleep ALL DAY? OLIVE It can’t sleep ALL day. Can it? ARI (munching) Sounds pretty good to me. Some of my cousins sleep all day. OLIVE I wonder when it eats. ARI (munching) Speaking of eating... (looks at his watch) It’s almost dinner time! OLIVE You’re right, we’d better go. ELINOR (to herself, a wish) Oh, please - wake up! ELINOR (in her sleep) Wake up owl... wake up! ELINOR (CONT’D) Who’s out there? ELINOR (CONT’D) Who what? ELINOR (CONT’D) Who, me? ELINOR (YELLING) (CONT’D) Yes I heard you! Do you mean me? I’m Elinor, that’s who! ELINOR (whisper comically loud) Mom! (Her mom stirs a bit.) Mom! Wake up! RANGER RABBIT What is it Elinor? Is something wrong? ELINOR I can’t sleep. RANGER RABBIT Oh, honey. What’s keeping you awake? ELINOR I can’t sleep because of a QUESTION. RANGER RABBIT Right. Tell me, what is your middle-of-the-night question? ELINOR It’s not MY question. Someone is outside my window asking ME questions! They keep saying “WHO!”, and won’t stop. RANGER RABBIT I see. ELINOR I want to go outside and see who it is. Can you come with me? RANGER RABBIT (after a breath, smiling) Yes I can. Let’s get our night-time observation kit! ELINOR I’m ready! Are you? RANGER RABBIT (with a smile) It’s the middle of the night. Of course I’m ready! ELINOR There it is again! Come on, Mom! We need MORE OBSERVATIONS! ELINOR Wow, it’s so dark! I can’t see anything! ELINOR (CONT’D) Is there anything awake out here? RANGER RABBIT (yawning) Other than two sleepy rabbits? Let’s have a look! ELINOR Wow! That was such a cool lizard! I’ve never seen one like that before. RANGER RABBIT That’s because you usually go into the forest during the day. Some animals only come out at night. Like this lizard - it’s called a gecko! ELINOR Look at this! These worms and bugs are awake! That is SO INTERESTING! ELINOR (CONT’D) I wonder what all these animals are doing up so late? RANGER RABBIT Maybe their children woke them up to go exploring? ELINOR <LAUGHS> MR. RACCOON Oh! (then, after adjusting to the light) Oh, hello, Ranger Rabbit! Hello, Elinor! ELINOR Hello, Mr. Raccoon! Are you out looking for the mysterious “who” too? MR. RACCOON Mysterious who? ELINOR Yes, who! MR. RACCOON I mean, WHO are you looking for? ELINOR We’re looking for the WHO, that’s who! RANGER RABBIT We are out exploring, Mr. Raccoon. MR. RACCOON Ahh! ELINOR Why are you awake so late, Mr. Raccoon? MR. RACCOON Oh, I always get up around this time. ELINOR REALLY? Does the WHO wake you up? MR. RACCOON Who..? Never mind. No, I have to wake up to work at the bakery! ELINOR You can’t do that during the day? MR. RACCOON Oh, no. I have to start baking the tasty treats at night, so they’ll be ready in time for breakfast! ELINOR Ohhhh... MR. RACCOON That way your favorite carrot cake muffins will be fresh from the oven when you come into my store in the morning. ELINOR Oh! I didn’t know that. But then, when do you sleep? MR. RACCOON I sleep in the afternoon when everyone else is awake. ELINOR Ohhh. MR. RACCOON Well, love to chat more, but I have to get going. Time to make the muffins! RANGER RABBIT Goodbye, Mr. Raccoon. ELINOR (calling) Don’t forget the carrot cake ones! (to her mom) Wow, mom. There sure is a lot going on in the forest at night! ELINOR (CONT’D) (singing) I thought the forest was quiet at night. But now that I have my trusty flashlight, I see worms and bugs and lizards, too! But I still wonder who said... ELINOR (CONT’D) There it is again! ELINOR (CONT’D) <GASP!> Look! ELINOR (CONT’D) (amazed) Wooooow! ELINOR (CONT’D) Mom, that’s the owl Ari, Olive and I saw on our way home! It’s so quiet I almost didn’t notice it fly by! RANGER RABBIT That’s because owls are amazing birds. They’re SILENT FLYERS. They have special feathers on their wings that don’t make any sound. ELINOR Oooh... ELINOR (CONT’D) (gets it) Wait a minute. That’s who’s been saying “whoo!” It’s the Owl!! He’s up late, just like Mr. Raccoon! RANGER RABBIT Yep, owls are NOCTURNAL. That means they stay awake at night. ELINOR But why? (after a beat) Does the Owl work at a bakery too? I didn’t even know there WERE Owl bakeries. RANGER RABBIT (smiling) I don’t think so! Owls are awake at night because they eat things like bugs and worms that come out at night. RANGER RABBIT (CONT’D) They have super special eyes that are really good at seeing things in the dark. ELINOR Wow! I didn’t know that owls were so... INTERESTING! ELINOR (CONT’D) Mom!! I just had a GREAT idea - come on! ARI Oooh, nice costume, Olive! OLIVE Thanks, Ari! You know I LOVE books, and I always wished I had one that turned its own pages, so check this out. ARI Ha ha, AWESOME! ARI (CONT’D) Wait a second... is this a book about bananas? OLIVE (giggles) I really do love bananas! So, what are you, Ari? ARI Me? Well, I am... ARI (CONT’D) (dramatic voice) The Mysterious Mysterioso! Super magician, at your service! OLIVE Cool! Are you going to do some magic? ARI Yes, I’m going to make my lunch disappear later. GOAT TWINS, OLIVE <LAUGH> OLIVE (giggling) Very impressive, Mysterious Mysterioso. ELINOR Whoooo! Whoo!! WHOOOO!!! OLIVE <Gasp!> Elinor, you look just like the owl we saw yesterday! ELINOR That’s right! My mom and I stayed up all night making my costume. Isn’t it iinnnnteresting? ARI It sure is!!! (a beat) But I thought owls slept all the time? ELINOR Nope, owls only sleep during the day, but they’re awake at night! That’s called being NOCTURNAL! OLIVE Nocturnal! I LIKE that word! ELINOR They have super good eyes for seeing in the dark. That’s when they eat their food. ARI Oohh. ELINOR AND they have special feathers that help them fly really quietly. OLIVE (figures something out) So that’s why the Owl we saw wouldn’t open its eyes! It was sleeping so it could be awake at night! ELINOR That’s riiiigghht (yaaaaaaawns) MS. MOLE Alright class, time to find our places! MS. MOLE (CONT’D) Welcome to COSTUME DAY! Okay, now who wants to talk about the costume they’re wearing? MS. MOLE (CONT’D) Wait, where’s Elinor? MS. MOLE (CONT’D) Yes, Ari? ARI Ms. Mole, Elinor’s an owl and she was awake all night making her costume. That means just like an owl... OLIVE She’ll be sleeping all day! MS. MOLE Oh, Elinor... ELINOR (quietly) SNOOOORE - Whooo....
