I've made some suggestions, but pls trim where you can 1. EXT. ELINOR'S YARD -– DAY Looks good to me too! One day, Elinor, Olive and Ari are playing catch in Elinor's backyard. "Both Anne and I thought this looked great. Thanks for sharing! A&B" ELINOR Here Ari, catch! Elinor throws the ball and Ari runs to catch it. He jumps in the air, catches, does a spin, and then <SFX: WHOA> flutters wildly before plopping on the ground <SFX: OOF!> . OLIVE Ari, are you ok ? ARI Yeah. But most important... I caught the ball! He holds the ball up triumphantly, and Elinor and Olive <SFX: GIGGLE>. Suddenly, Elinor notices HAZEL, a very outgoing lioness, has come into the yard. She's sniffing flowers near Elinor's garden. ELINOR Look, it's Hazel. ARI Oh, hi Hazel! Whatcha doing? HAZEL Hi Elinor, hi Olive, hi Ari! I'm smelling all the amazing flowers you have. I think this one is my favorite. (sniffs another) Ooh , no. Now THIS one is my favorite! ARI Want to play catch with us? HAZEL Ok ! ARI Awesome. Go long! He throws the ball back towards the others. Hazel runs, but we see the ball land without Hazel in the frame. ELINOR Uh, where did Hazel go? OLIVE I think she found a new smell. The kids look over and see Hazel sniffing the air. HAZEL (sniffing) Something over here smells delicious and fruity. It's coming from... Right... (sniffs the air) Here! Hazel stops at Elinor's garden and leans in for a full whiff of the strawberries. suggest cutting 'Yep! That's the smell." HAZEL (CONT'D) Yep! That's the smell. Strawberries! Mmm , these smell so good. The other kids walk over. ELINOR Do you like strawberries, Hazel? HAZEL I super duper love strawberries! "could combine 16 and 17 - ""me too. Elinor grows the YUMMIEST strawberries."" " OLIVE Me too. Especially Elinor's strawberries. cut 17 ARI Yeah, Elinor grows the YUMMIEST strawberries. HAZEL You grew these? ELINOR Mm hmm! Well...with my parents. Would you like to have one? HAZEL Yes! I mean.. Please, can I? ELINOR My parents said it's okay to pick them, as long as we wash them before we eat them. HAZEL Yay! Let's pick some strawberries. As the kids go to pick, we push in close on a strawberry. DISSOLVE TO: 2. EXT. ELINOR'S YARD -- LATER We are still close on a strawberry and, as we pull out, we see the kids now sitting at a picnic table with a basket bowl of cut strawberries, enjoying the fruits of their labor. before line 23 - description correction - 'basket bowl ' - remove basket ARI These are the best strawberries ever! How did you grow them to be so yummy, Elinor? ELINOR That's easy. I'll tell you my secret... I just made sure my garden had the three S's . they are at the picnic table - reads that she grabs packet of seeds and a handful of soil - we can have a packet on the table but she will need to get down from the table and run over to the garden which is on the other side of the house from where the picnic table sits. suggest we just keep the pack of seeds since she hands it to Hazel later but we do this in a thought bubble - visually showing the 3 S's HAZEL Three S's ? As Elinor explains, she grabs a packet of seeds, a handful of soil and motions up to the sun to demonstrate. ELINOR (leaning on the S sound) Yep. Good Ssseeds to plant - that the first S, lots of really nice brown Sssoil for the plants to grow in and loads of Sssun to help the plants grow. HAZEL Oh, three S's , I get it! Hazel takes another bite of a strawberry and gets up, doing a happy little dance as she speaks. HAZEL (CONT'D) (mouth full) Mmmm , they are so yummy. Thank you, Elinor! The kids all <GIGGLE> as Elinor remembers something. to help cut - as noted above - the garden is at the opposite side of the house from where they are seated - if we keep this moment of her watering - we will not see Elinors action - she will exit and we stay on the kids dancing which doesnt seem necessary - Elinor can point out the 4th thing but not suggest watering the garden ELINOR That reminds me, there is a 4th thing that every garden needs... water! I'd better water my garden so we can keep my strawberries healthy. ari can instead say "oh right! of course" - in agreement of the water ARI Good idea. While you do that, I'm gonna do... whatever Hazel's doing. As Elinor takes a moment to water her garden, Olive and Ari join Hazel in her dance. After a beat, they settle down again. Hazel grabs another strawberry. HAZEL I wish I could grow yummy strawberries like these at my house too! ELINOR You can, Hazel. You just need a garden, and the three S's . OLIVE And water. ELINOR (giggles) Yeah. Here, you can have the very first S... seeds. Elinor hands Hazel the packet of strawberry seeds she had earlier. Hazel is very excited about this and now spins around in joy! HAZEL Wow, thank you, Elinor! I can't wait to grow my very own strawberries! Hazel stops in mid-spin. since we may have the thought bubble earlier as suggested - we can cut this. visually, Elinor doesnt know what Hazel's garden would look like HAZEL (CONT'D) Oh. Uhh ... but wait, I don't have a garden at home. Elinor then has a THOUGHT BUBBLE shows Elinor helping Hazel plant a garden. ELINOR Not yet! But maybe we can help you start a garden of your own. HAZEL Really? ELINOR Yeah, as long as your parents are okay with it. HAZEL (mouth full) Are you kidding? My dad loves strawberries. He's gonna be so excited! ARI Mr. Lion gets excited about everything! That's why his art class is so fun! ELINOR Let's go to your house and start your strawberry garden. OLIVE Ooh , this is going to be fun. HAZEL Can we also bring some of these yummy strawberries for my Dad? ELINOR Sure! I'll go tell my Mom we're going to your place and get more strawberries to bring with us. Hazel cheers <SFX: YAY!> And does her little dance again, and the kids <SFX: GIGGLE>. The kids run off with SFX: EXCITED WALLA. 3. EXT. HAZEL'S APARTMENT -- DAY The kids arrive at the apartment in the main area of town. HAZEL Here we are, home sweet home. The kids are a bit confused as they look at the storefront. "change due to where we have set up the designed location - ""Whoa, cool. I didn't know you lived above the gallery"" - We felt that the gallery could in fact be Mr.Lions, being he's an artist" ARI Whoa, cool. I didn't know you lived above Mr. Hippo's store. "Yep. We live right above it" HAZEL Yep. We live right above the store. they are very close to the park being in town - could remove and just have Olive excited because they live close to the library OLIVE Ooh , you live in an apartment. That's sooo cool! You're so close to the park and the library! HAZEL Yeah, my dad was very excited about it, of course. And he loves painting on our balcony. As the kids come around to the side of the building, they see Hazel's father, Mr. Lion, painting on the balcony. ELINOR/OLIVE/ARI Hi, Mr. Lion! MR. LION Oh, hey there, kids! Hello, Hazel-basil. Don't mind me, I'm just capturing the beauty of Animal Town in the afternoon. HAZEL Dad, Elinor is gonna help me start a garden to grow yummy strawberries. MR. LION Ooh , I love strawberries! Red is such a bold color, they always look beautiful. HAZEL See? I told ya he would love it. OLIVE Where should we put the garden, Hazel? correction - "Hmmm... I don't know. I don't have a yard like you do, Elinor." HAZEL Hmmm ... I don't know. I don't have yard like you do, Elinor. Ari reassures her. ARI No yard? No problem, Hazel! I'm sure we can figure out somewhere else to put your garden. As the kids enter the building, Elinor is confident. ELINOR We sure will. You can have a garden anywhere as long as you have seeds, soil and sun. OLIVE And water! The kids all <SFX: GIGGLE> as they run upstairs. 4. INT. HAZEL'S APARTMENT -- DAY The kids enjoy some more strawberries with Mr. Lion. MR. LION Oh, Hazel-basil, you were right! These strawberries are just plain tickling my tastebuds ! I can't wait 'till you grow some of your own. HAZEL Me either! Mr. Lion grabs another strawberry. MR. LION Well, I'd better get back to my painting, but thanks for bringing some color to my day, kids. Have fun. ARI Bye, Mr. Lion! As Mr. Lion walks off, Elinor leads the kids around the apartment. ELINOR Okay, so we need to figure out where to put your garden, Hazel. HAZEL Yup , all we need are the three S's: seed, soil and sun... And water! Hazel says the last bit before Olive has a chance, and the kids <SFX: GIGGLE> ELINOR Right. And you have the first S, seeds, so now we just need a place with soil and sun. HAZEL Hmm... what about the kitchen sink? Elinor and Olive look at the sink and see dishes in it. OLIVE Yeah, but... it doesn't have any soil. ARI And if you made a garden in your sink, how would you wash your dishes? HAZEL Oh... good point. (she thinks then) I got it! Hazel then takes off before the kids can even say anything. The kids follow and Hazel points into her bathroom (which we don't see). HAZEL (CONT'D) When I have a bath, I wash my dirt off in the tub. Let's put my garden there! Hazel is proud of this suggestion, but the kids <LAUGH>. ELINOR I don't think there's enough dirt left in your tub after you take a bath. could cut this line ARI Yeah, usually my tub is empty after I take a bath. And I get REALLY dirty playing. OLIVE You know, my Mom has lots of plants inside the house, and her plants are always in a pot or a box. Elinor brightens up. ELINOR Yeah, we could put your garden in a box. HAZEL Great, but... where are we going to get the soil? lines 78 and 79 - the apartement is above the gallery - which is in town so they are already there - maybe elinor can instead respond with 'Hey, we're already in town!' OLIVE Mmmm , when we need soil, my mom usually goes into town to get it. ELINOR That's a great idea, Olive! Why don't we go into town and look for a box and some soil. HAZEL Yeah, and then we'll have two of the S's: seeds and soil! suggest to cut "Looking for dirt! Now this is my kinda mission" - cut the rest ARI Now this is my kinda mission! Looking for dirt! ( pauses ) I'm probably going to need a BIG bath tonight. The kids <SFX: GIGGLE>. ELINOR Let's go! 5. EXT. ANIMAL TOWN MAIN STREET –- DAY The kids walk around Animal Town with a wagon they grabbed from the storage closet at the bottom of the building. Suddenly, Ari sees an empty field nearby. ARI Look! There's plenty of dirt we can use for soil here! Ari and Hazel run over and try to dig up the dirt with their hands, but the red dirt is really hard to dig up. ELINOR Hmm... this soil is to hard to dig up. OLIVE Yeah! What we need is good, healthy brown soil like Elinor has in her garden. Location Mz.llama's restaurant - this is located in town and across from the apartement. we have established a side garden with compost - this can take place here HAZEL Gotcha , brown soil. Let's look for it this way! Hazel once again takes off and the others follow closely behind, struggling to keep up with the energetic lioness. 6. EXT. MZ. LLAMA'S YARD -- CONTINUOUS Suddenly, Hazel stops next to Mz. Llama's place, she points to Mz. Llama's backyard and the others notice that Mz. Llama has dug a big hole in the ground to plant the tree. She has a pile of good, brown soil, so they approach Mz. Llama. HAZEL Hey, look! Will that soil work for my garden? ELINOR I don't know. Let's go see. OLIVE Hi, Mz. Llama! MZ. LLAMA Oh, hello kids! Hi, Hazel! ARI Whatcha doing, Mz. Llama? MZ. LLAMA Oh, I just finished digging this hole so I can plant a new tree. The kids look at each other excitedly. ELINOR Mz. Llama, are you going to be using all that brown soil you dug up? MZ. LLAMA Nope. If you kids need it, you can have it. ELINOR Thanks, Mz. Llama. Hazel comes running into the frame towing the red wagon. HAZEL I'll get the soil! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mz. Llama! As Hazel goes to grab the dirt, Ari notices a wooden box behind Mz. Llama. ARI Mz. Llama, is this your wooden box too? MZ. LLAMA It is, the tree came in that box. I was planning to recycle it, but if you want to reuse it you're welcome to have it. Hazel runs over to the box, picks it up over her head and brings it over to the dirt pile. HAZEL Woo hoo ! This box is perfect to hold the soil. OLIVE Wow, thank you so much, Mz. Llama! the kids wouldnt leave yet - they havent had the time to put all the dirt into the box - we can have Hazel put the box down and Mz.Llama can offer to help shovel it in. "here le tme help you with that" we see her start to add the dirt and we waterson out. then start next seq as is ARI Yeah, you're the best! The others follow behind Hazel as Mz. Llama waves to them. MZ. LLAMA It's no problem. I'm always happy to help. Have fun, kids. 7. INT. HAZEL'S APARTMENT -- DAY The kids arrive back inside Hazel's apartment with their box full of soil. ELINOR Okay, so we have our first two S's , seeds and soil. All that's left is the final "S"... Sun. HAZEL Let's find a nice, sunny spot in the apartment! As Hazel runs off, we see a quick MONTAGE set to fun, bouncy music where the kids try out various spots and find reasons why each spot won't work. First up, the kitchen table. OLIVE But how are you going to eat? Next, under the kitchen table. ARI Mm, not enough sun. Next, Hazel places the garden next to the couch. ELINOR You might step on it. Hazel places the garden in the dark closet and we see nothing. A beat later, Hazel turns on a flashlight, which puts some light in the closet, where she and Hazel stand. ELINOR (CONT'D) Definitely not enough sun. Finally, Hazel puts the garden on top of her toy box. OLIVE This spot gets a lot of sun, but how will you get to your toys? HAZEL Ohh . Good point. As the music fades, the kids are stumped. HAZEL (CONT'D) I don't know, Elinor. I'm not so sure there really is a good spot for this garden in my apartment. Elinor sees disappointed Hazel flashes her puppy dog eyes. ELINOR There has to be a perfect, sunny spot somewhere. We just haven't found it yet. Right on cue, Mr. Lion comes back in from the balcony. MR. LION Whew. I love painting on the balcony. The natural light is WOOONDERFUL , but it can get a bit hot with all that sun shining on you. The kids all look at each other. ELINOR That's it! The balcony gets lots of sun. HAZEL I could put my garden in the balcony! OLIVE Mr. Lion, would it be okay to go out and see if the balcony is a good place for Hazel's garden? MR. LION Sure! Way to think outside the box, or should I say, outside the apartment. Mr. Lion laughs at his Dad joke, but he's the only one. MR. LION (CONT'D) Well, you kids should never go out on the balcony by yourselves, so I'll go with you. I'd love to help with your fun garden project. ELINOR Let's go! Hazel heads out first <SFX: YAAAY!> , of course! 8. EXT. BALCONY -- DAY The kids go out on the balcony and quickly discover that Elinor was right! HAZEL Elinor, you were right. This is the perfect place for my garden. MR. LION Agreed! And might I say, a little garden out here will really make the place look better. As it finally looks like this garden of her own is about to become reality, Hazel looks really happy. HAZEL Thank you soooo much everybody, for all of your help with this garden! ELINOR You're welcome, Hazel, but we're not done yet. We still have to plant the garden. HAZEL That shouldn't be too hard because now we have all three S's: Seeds, soil and sun. SONG MONTAGE: As the music rises, Elinor and her friends sing a song about the three S's . As they sing their song, the kids dance and help Hazel set up an amazing new garden right in the wooden box on the balcony and plant the seeds! ELINOR You can build a garden anywhere A balcony, a yard or here or there As long as you have these three special things You can have all the joy that a garden brings. Olive pulls out the packet of seeds and places them in little holes in the garden. OLIVE: The first thing to get are your favorite seeds To grow fruits or veggies or whatever you need. Ari then carefully covers the seeds with soil. ARI: The next thing is soil straight from the ground You can dig it up or buy it, it's all around. Hazel points up to the sun above, which shines down on the garden. HAZEL: Once your seeds are planted, you'll need sunlight To make sure your plants grow big and bright. ELINOR: You can build a garden anywhere. A balcony, a yard or here or there, As long as you have those three, special things-- Olive then comes in with a watering can, interrupting Elinor. OLIVE: (spoken) And water. Can't forget water. Hazel then jumps into frame, finishing the song. HAZEL: You'll have all the joy that a garden brings! With the garden now planted, we pull out and watch the sun rise, set and rise over the balcony. As the songs ends, we: DISSOLVE TO: 9. EXT. BALCONY –- DAY (SOME TIME LATER) Mr. Lion and the other kids watch as Hazel waters her garden, which now has its very own strawberries growing! There are also some other fruits and veggies growing behind the strawberries too, such as tomatoes and cucumbers. MR. LION Oh, Hazel-basil, I am so proud of you for taking such great care of your garden for the last few weeks. ELINOR Me too. Everything looks great. Especially your strawberries! OLIVE And it looks like they're just about ready to be picked. Hazel then pulls out a bowl of strawberries. HAZEL I already have some ready for you! Here everybody, have a fresh, yummy strawberry. (then, to Elinor) And don't worry, I already washed them. Hazel WINKS at Elinor, who smiles, as everyone grabs a strawberry. ARI Don't mind if I do! Each of the kids, and Mr. Lion, take a bite and it's clear they're very tasty. OLIVE Mmm , these are great, Hazel. ELINOR Yeah. I couldn't have done a better job myself. HAZEL Well, there's nothing sweeter than strawberries you've grown yourself... on your own balcony garden. ARI I think this calls for a Hazel style celebration! Ari leads them in a joyful Hazel dance as the kids <LAUGH> and eat more berries, and we: FADE OUT.
