Olive and Ari stay by the door poking their noses in. OlIVE Hi, Elinor... Ari How are you feeling? Are you sniffly? ELINOR (stuffed up nose) Yup, I’m pretty sniffly, and AH-CHOOO!...sneezy too. (NOTE: Elinor sneezes cute little bunny sneezes, and practices good preschool “sneeze etiquette,” sneezing into her elbow each time. Also, if it works as a gag, perhaps Olive and Ari duck their heads or back up a little each time she sneezes, or just as she’s ah-ah-ah-ing.) DIALOGUE NOTE: Elinor should sound like she has a bit of a cold, but she’s not too sick, all through this Episode. MR. The kitchen isn't on the way to the front door in Elinor's house. Just have them go to the kitchen for Dad to get some water, and for the other kids to just hang out for a little while (Mr. Rabbit wouldn't shoo them right away). Olive I wish we could do something for Elinor to help her feel better. Ari Hmmmm, sometimes when I’m sick my mom makes me soup. Mr. RABBIT Actually I was planning on making Elinor a batch of her favourite - Backyard Soup. Olive Backyard soup? What’s Backyard Soup? …"the yummiest…" Ari Backyard Soup is yummiest soup ever, I had some with Elinor and her parents once. They make it with all the veggies they grow in the back yard . OlIVE Really? That sounds soooo delicious . Can we help make it, Mr. Rabbit? "Let's keep the group in the kitchen until line 44. It's a bit odd for them to discuss the veggies while right in front of the veggies (why doesn't MR. Rabbit just point them out?). Delete the scene heading and description below this line. Olive But which ones should we pick? MR. RABBIT Well, let’s see. Tomatoes, beans, radishes and carrots for a start. ArI Whoa that’s a LOTTA veggies. How are we gonna remember all those? OlIVE I’d better make a list. (Olive takes out her notebook.) First we need round, red tomatoes. ANGLE ON: Olive draws tomatoes. Ari Then some long skinny green beans. I love those. ANGLE ON: Olive draws long, skinny green beans. MR. RABBIT Also some radishes . OlIVE Those are purple. She draws purple beets with green tops. Mr. RABBIT Okay I think that’s it for now. Ari Uhh, Mr. Rabbit, aren’t you forgetting something...? OlIVE Elinor’s FAVOURITE ... Mr. RABBIT CARROTS! I almost forgot. Good thing I’ve got you kids around to help me out. So, can you gather the veggies from the garden while I go and check on Elinor? Olive draws orange carrots with abundant green leafy tops. OlIVE Sure thing, Mr. Rabbit , we’re good helpers. In description below, change "deeper into" to "out to" Ari It’s kind of our thing. Let’s go get those veggies. Olive waves her notebook as they head deeper into the garden and Mr. Rabbit heads to back into the house . 5. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM – DAY Dad enters with Elinor’s favourite adventure book and a glass of water. Mr. RABBIT Ready for a story, hunny bunny? EliNOR Yes, please, official story-book reader. An ADVENTURE story. MR. RABBIT Ah, yes. An ADVENTURE story. (he opens the books and reads) It was a beautiful day for an adventure and our Fearless Explorer… Elinor interrupts with a sniffle. ElinOR Not just any Explorer Daddy, Explorer...Ah-ah-ah-chooo. Elinor sneezes into her sleeve. Dad hands her a tissue. MR. RABBIT Riiiight. Explorer Achooo! ELINOR (laughing) Nooooooo. Not Explorer Achoo, Explorer ELINOR. Delete "for her next adventure" (we repeat the word a lot). MR. RABBIT Of course, my mistake, Explorer ELINOR was just getting ready for her next adventure. She wasn’t sure where she was going to go, but she knew it was going to be... ELINOR ...an ADVENTURE ! 6. EXT. BACK YARD -- DAY In the back yard Olive and Ari search the garden. Add "let's go find these veggies" between "okay" and "first" OlIVE Okay, first thing - round red tomatoes. ArI Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes - oh, there they are! Up on those plants. ANGLE ON: Plump red tomatoes high up on a staked tomato plant. OLIVE Wow! The tomatoes are so big the plants need to be held up by sticks. Ari adds them to the basket. OLIVE (CONT’D) That was easy. Next veggie, beans. ARI Not just any beans, long green yummy beans. (calling) Beans! Beans! Where are you beans? OLIVE Oh, I see them. Growing on the middle of those vines. ANGLE ON: The beans vines climbing poles. ARI Look at that. V ines like to climb poles. Olive checks beans off her list. OLIVE We already found two of the veggies. We'll be done in no time. 7. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM – DAY Dad is reading to Elinor as she snuggles in bed. MR. RABBIT Explorer Elinor was having the best adventure EVER. First she climbed a mountain. EliNOR A mountain? Was it very high? THOUGHT BUBBLE - Elinor climbing a mountain that gets higher and higher.. MR. RABBIT The highest mountain ever! Then she swam down to the bottom of the ocean. THOUGHT BUBBLE - Elinor swimming down to the bottom of the ocean. ELINOR A deep ocean? MR. RABBIT The deepest. Then she swung sideways through the jungle on a vine . THOUGHT BUBBLE - Elinor swings through the jungle, as we pan down. ELINOR W heeeeeeee!! That IS an amazing adventure, official storybook reader. MR. RABBIT Glad you like it, Explorer Elinor. 8. EXT. ELINOR’S BACK YARD - DAY Ari and Olive are almost finished their list, they have gathered all the veggies except for the carrots. Olive Okay, we’ve almost finished our list...all we need are radishes ... ArI ...and carrots! You can’t forget carrots! OLIVE Right, radishes and carrots. Well, those should be easy to find because the radishes are purple and the carrots are orange. ARI Yep, they should be pretty easy to spot in all these green leaves . Let's see…orange carrots.. Orange, orange, orange... Huh. I don't see any orange veggies. Then Olive tries looking for the radishes. Olive Let’s try purple radishes. Purple, purple, purple...I don't see any purple radishes either. Where are they? 9. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM - DAY Mister Rabbit is in mid-sentence. MR. RABBIT ...finally Explorer Elinor was happy to be back in her nice comfy bed, the end. (He hears a little <SFX: SNOORE> and looks over to see that Elinor has dozed off. He gives his daughter a little kiss on the forehead. ) Have a good rest, hunny bunny. He tiptoes out. 10. EXT. ELINOR’S GARDEN -- DAY Ari is looking around, as Olive checks the “harvesting list” one more time and notices something they’d forgotten. Change "No" to "Where are", and delete "But" ArI No carrots or radishes? But Mr. Rabbtit said we needed them for the soup so they must be around here somewhere. Hmmm. What would Elinor do? "Split this line. Add a line for Ari in between ""Olive looks"" and ""Wait…"": ARI: Ok, the list says we need orange carrots. But I don't see any orange in the garden." OliVE She'd say, we need more observations! Let's look more closely at our list. (Olive looks) Wait a minute, Ari, l ook at this. ANGLE ON: The drawing of the carrot in Olive’s notebook . Delete this line. ArI It’s a great drawing, Olive, but we need real carrots for the soup. Merge this line with the last sentece of line 75 ("Wait a minute…") OlIVE I know, but see. The carrot isn’t just the orange pointy part, it has these fuzzy green leaves at the end. "Change ""that green stuff"" to ""those leaves"", then delete ""kinda like that"" Add a line for OLIVE: Maybe we should look for these leaves. Then a line for ARI: Look, over there!" ARI Hmmm. I do remember seeing that green stuff on carrots my mom buys - kinda like that... Ari points. ANGLE ON: Carrot greens. Olive runs over and checks them out. OlIVE This is it, Ari. These leaves look like my drawing – green and fuzzy, but where is the pointy orange carrot part? Ari looks down really low. Ari Hey Olive, check this out ! ANGLE ON: Ari notices a tiny spot of orange poking out of the earth - he moves the dirt away. OLIVE Wow, it sure looks like the top of an orange carrot, but it ’s buried underground. Replace this line with, "Should we dig it up?" ArI Maybe it’s the same thing with the radishes. Olive sees a radish plant close by. I don't think we need the radish beat here. Delete this line and the description above. OlIVE Those look like radish leaves. (Olive brushes the dirt away) And that looks like a radish. Should we dig it up? Ari shrugs. The kids are considering what to do when Mr. Rabbit shows up. MR. RABBIT Hey kids, Elinor’s asleep so I thought I’d come out here and give you a... (noticing) ...what are you looking at? Mr. Rabbit gets down and joins them on the ground. OlIVE Veggies. Another expo can't hurt here. Replace this line with: "We've been trying to find carrots, but we haven't found any. We thought they grew on the plant, like tomatoes and beans. But now we think THIS is the carrot." (the dad's line in 93 makes more sense) Ari We THINK it’s THIS is a carrot . Ari points to the carrot. MR. RABBIT What makes you think that? Change "as my carrot drawing" to something like, "that we always see on carrots" OlIVE Well it has the same green fuzzy leaves as my carrot drawing. Add to line "…peeking from the ground." ArI And when we looked closer we saw this orange part. Mr. RABBIT Great investigating kids. You’re right -- it IS a carrot! Ari I KNEW it! Change "in" to "under" OliVE But what’s a carrot doing in the ground? Add to line: "It's actually the root of the plant" Mr. RABBIT Carrots aren’t like tomatoes and beans, Olive. The yummy part of a carrot grows underground. Replace with <SFX: WHOA WALLA> ArI Really? OliVE /ari That is soo interesting . They both <SFX: LAUGH> ARI B ut...how do you get a carrot OUT of the ground. Replace "stem" with "plant" Mr. RABBIT You just give the stem a pull. Go ahead. Ari and Olive each pull a car rot OUT of the ground, falling over backwards as they do. OlIVE WOW! ARI We pulled it right out! Replace first two sentences with "See? The orange part is the root." Mr. RABBIT See? The yummy eating part you eat is actually the root of the carrot plant. That’s why carrots are called root vegetables. CLOSE ON: the carrot. OlIVE Root vegetables. I LIKE those words. Have Ari look at the radish drawing, and add a question mark at end of line to make it a question. Ari I guess radishes are root vegetables too. He points to the radishes. "In description above this line, change it to: ""He looks for a beat, then runs over to the radish plant. He uncovers some dirt to reveal part of the purple radish. ARI: Look, I can see the purple part under the ground. Then on line 103, change ""They sure are"" to ""Yup, radishes are root vegetables too.""" MR. RABBIT They sure are. And so are turnips , beets and potatoes, and we have them all -- ready to dig up in the garden. Ari Did you say dig? OlIVE Ari loves to dig. ARI I really do! SONG MONTAGE As they sing Ari and Olive look at drawings of the veggies’ green leafy parts (carrots, radishes, turnips, potatoes) Then look for that in the garden. They have uncovered the process for finding root vegetables. Maybe Olive draws a brown dirt line in her notebook. Then they dig up the veggies. Olive/ari OLIVE: Veggies are delicious, Veggies are the best. ARI: But did you know, Some veggies grow, Down deeper than the rest. OLIVE: The yummy part of a tomato, Grows out in the sun. ARI: But the yummy part of a carrot grows... Way down Underground. BOTH: Root veggies, root veggies, We all love our root veggies, Radishes and potatoes, Carrots and turnips too, Root veggies are so yummy, And they make great soup for you! 11. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM -- DAY Later that afternoon, Elinor is awake. Mister Rabbit comes into her room and sits on her bed. MR. RABBIT How are you feeling, honey bunny. Elinor stretches and yawns. Agree with PBS note ElINOR A little better. Not so sniffly. And I’m not sneezing any more. MR. RABBIT Good. Ready for another adventure story? ELINOR Uh-huh. MR. RABBIT You’re gonna like this one. It’s about the time Explorer Elinor had to stay in bed because of her sniffles. ELINOR Ooooh, I know how she feels. MR. RABBIT But it gets more exciting because her two friends Explorer Olive and Explorer Ari decide to do something to make her feel better. ELINOR Really? Change "go" to "went" and replace "everything they need" with "vegetables". Also change "her favourite" to "some" MR. RABBIT Yep, they go on an Exploring Adventure in the garden to find everything they need to make Explorer Elinor her favourite soup. THOUGHT BUBBLE Olive and Ari march out into the Garden. RABBIT Yep, but THIS time they decided to use special veggies, ones where the yummy part grows underground, like radishes, beets, potatoes and carrots. The THOUGHT BUBBLE shows the veggies growing underground, then Olive and Ari pull them up. PAN DOWN to Elinor, now Ari and Olive are in the room. Ari is holding a tray with a small bowl of soup, with Olive gesturing beside him like Vanna White. Delete line ELINOR Carrots? I LOVE carrots! Change to: "(thought bubble forms, taking up the story) We looked and looked… until we found our treasure… buried under the ground!" Olive We know you do, but we couldn’t find them in the garden, until we learned that carrots are root veggies. Change to: "Yup, we learned that carrots are root veggies, and root veggies grow under the ground. That's why we decided to call this soup…" Ari And root veggies grow underground. That’s why we decided to call our special soup.... Unveil soup (they pull the napkin) Olive/Ari UNDERGROUND SOUP ELiNOR Really? You made Underground Soup just for me? Ari hands the tray to Mr. Rabbit who gets Elinor set up. ARI Yup! OlIVE We wanted to cheer you up, Explorer Elinor. Elinor Aww, thanks Explorers Olive and Ari. ( Elinor takes a sip. ) <Slurrrup>. Logline: E linor’s in bed with a case of the sniffles, so Olive and Ari decide to make some soup to help her feel better, but they can’t find the carrots. CURRICULUM GOALS LS8 .
