Ari Hi, Mister Rabbit. Can Elinor come out and play? Mr. Rabbit Sorry, kids. Elinor can’t play outside today, she’s in bed with a case of the sniffles. Maybe after oh no, Olive can explain for the audience: "Oh, no! She has a cold? Can we visit her?" OLIVE (with concern) Oh, no! Can we visit her? Ari Yeah, if she’s feeling sick, maybe we can cheer her up. Saw PBS' note, but it seems odd they can't see her here at the beginning, but then at the end they go into her room anyway with the soup. Suggest having them go into the room at the beginning, but have Dad tell them here not to get too close. Then when they go to the room, have Ari and Olive stay by the door. It's nice to have the episode start the same way it ends. Mr. RABBIT That’s a really nice idea, kids, but I don’t want you to get too close. You might catch Elinor’s sniffles. Are you sniffly? olive is on the ground - she wouldnt need to move back - back ari fluttering up by the window, can ELINOR Yup, I’m pretty sniffly, and AH-CHOOO!...sneezy too. (NOTE: Elinor sneezes cute little bunny sneezes, and practices good preschool “sneeze etiquette,” sneezing into her elbow each time. Also, if it works as a gag, perhaps Olive and Ari back up a little each time she sneezes, or just as she’s ah-ah-ah-ing.) Olive lets not have them start to make their way around the house - this is a long conversation and they would have made it all around to the front, passing the garden - then dad would say follow me and they'd have to head back. therfore, lets have them have this conversation in the yard - then dad says follow me and they head to the garden I wish we could do something for Elinor to help her feel better. Ari Hmmmm, sometimes when I’m sick my mom makes me soup. Mr. RABBIT Actually I was planning on making Elinor a batch of her favourite - Backyard Soup. Olive Backyard soup? What’s Backyard Soup? … in the back yard. Ari I had some with Elinor and her Dad once' should read 'i had it with elinor and her parents once as mom was there too Backyard Soup is yummiest soup ever, I had some with Elinor and her Dad once. They make it with all the veggies they grow in the back garden. Scrumptious might be a tough word. Suggest delicious. Olive But which ones should we pick? suggest start with "well..lets see, tomatoes, beans, carrots and beets for a start' - However, if we want to stick to the same ingredients she collected in the episode 'Backyard Soup' - it was peas, potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and radishes - and can still owrk with 'root vegetables' needed for this story MR. RABBIT Tomatoes, beans, carrots and beets for a start. ArI Whoa that’s a LOTTA veggies. How are we gonna remember all those? OlIVE I’d better make a list. (Olive takes out her notebook.) First we need round, red tomatoes. ANGLE ON: Olive draws tomatoes. Ari Then some long skinny green beans. I love those. ANGLE ON: Olive draws long, skinny green beans. MR. RABBIT Also some beets. OlIVE Those are purple. She draws purple beets with green tops. Mr. RABBIT Okay I think that’s it for now. Ari Uhh, Mr. Rabbit, aren’t you forgetting something...? OlIVE Elinor’s FAVOURITE ... Mr. RABBIT CARROTS! I almost forgot. Good thing I’ve got you kids around to help me out. Olive draws orange carrots with abundant green leafy tops. OlIVE Yep, we’re good helpers. I think Mr Rabbit needs a line to clarify why he's not joining/helping collect the veggies. Ari reads that they run to the garden - but they are already there at the top of the seq. It’s kind of our thing. Let’s go get those veggies. Olive waves her notebook in the air as they run to the garden, and Mr. Rabbit heads into the house. 5. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM – DAY Dad enters with Elinor’s favourite adventure book and a glass of water. Mr. RABBIT Ready for a story, hunny bunny? EliNOR Yes, please, official story-book reader. An ADVENTURE story. MR. RABBIT Ah, yes. An ADVENTURE story. (he opens the books and reads) It was a beautiful day for an adventure and our Fearless Explorer… Elinor interrupts with a sniffle. ElinOR Not just any Explorer Daddy, Explorer...Ah-ah-ah-chooo. Elinor sneezes into her sleeve. Dad hands her a tissue. MR. RABBIT Riiiight. Explorer Achooo! ELINOR (laughing) Nooooooo. Not Explorer Achoo, Explorer ELINOR. MR. RABBIT Of course, my mistake, Explorer ELINOR was just getting ready for her next adventure. ANGLE ON: Plump red tomatoes on a staked tomato plant. OLIVE Wow! The tomatoes are so big the plants need to be held up by sticks. Ari adds them to the basket. Add "That was easy" at the beginning of line. OLIVE (CONT’D) Next veggie, beans. ARI Not just any beans, long green yummy beans. (calling) Beans! Beans! Where are you beans? OLIVE Oh, I see them. ANGLE ON: The beans vines climbing poles. """bean vines"" will sound awkward. Maybe just ""These vines"" After this line, maybe add that Olive checks off beans off her list, then say something like, ""We already found two of the veggies. We'll be done in no time.""" ARI Look at that. Bean vines like to climb poles. 7. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM – DAY Dad is reading to Elinor as she snuggles in bed. See if you can make this monologue a little interactive/fun/funny with Elinor here. MR. RABBIT Explorer Elinor was having the best adventure EVER. First she climbed the highest mountain in the land! (THOUGHT BUBBLE - Elinor climbing a mountain.) Then she swam to the bottom of the deepest ocean. (THOUGHT BUBBLE - Elinor swimming down to the bottom of the ocean.) Then she swung through the jungle on a vine - wheeeeeeee!! Great to have the positional words in the story he is reading match the positional words in the vegetable hunt....maybe story could be about going underground and climbing vines above ground...more strongly connected to the content. Olive Okay, we’ve almost finished our list...all we need are beets... ArI ...and carrots! You can’t forget carrots! OLIVE Right, beets and carrots. Well, those should be easy to find because the beets are purple and the carrots are orange. """in all this green"" doesn't feel like a phrase a kid would say After this line, have them look around and get confused. Make more of the mystery. Let's see… orange carrots.. Orange... Huh. I don't see any orange veggies. Then Olive tries looking for the radishes. Purple radishes... purple... I don't see any radishes. Where are they? Then cut." ARI Yep, they should be pretty easy to spot in all this green. 9. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM - DAY Mister Rabbit is in mid-sentence. MR. RABBIT ...finally Explorer Elinor was happy to be back in her nice comfy bed, the end. (He hears a little <SFX: SNOORE> and looks over to see that Elinor has dozed off. He gives his daughter a little kiss on the forehead. ) Have a good rest, hunny bunny. He tiptoes out. 10. EXT. ELINOR’S GARDEN -- DAY Ari is looking around, as Olive checks the “harvesting list” one more time and notices something they’d forgotten. Recap a little: add a line or two to deepen the confusion/mystery. What are we missing? Maybe you can add a cute moment where they wonder "What would Elinor do?" She'd say, We need more observations! Let's look more closely at our list. ArI I can’t see beets around here anywhere. Or carrots either. note that this is the drawing in her notebook and not to be mistaken for a sign in the garden OliVE Ari, wait a second. Look at this. ANGLE ON: The drawing of the carrot. ArI It’s a great drawing, Olive, but we need real carrots for the soup. OlIVE I know, but look more closely, see. The carrot isn’t just the orange pointy part, it has these fuzzy green leaves at the end. ARI Hmmm. I do remember seeing that green stuff on carrots my mom buys - kinda like that... Ari points. ANGLE ON: Carrot greens. Olive runs over and checks them out. Might be good to have Ari or Olive say "If Elinor were here she would say "We need more observations" OlIVE This is it, Ari. These leaves look like my drawing – green and fuzzy, but where is the pointy orange carrot part? Ari looks down really low. Ari Hey Olive, look at this! Olive and Ari are examining the carrot greens when Ari notices a tiny spot of orange poking out of the earth - he moves the dirt away. After this line, add a bit more: myabe have Olive or Ari look over and notice the same thing about radishes, and how you can see the tops. OLIVE would she say 'seems to be' ?? since it is clearly under ground Wow, it sure looks like the top of an orange carrot, but it seems to be buried underground. ArI Should we dig it up? Olive shrugs. The kids are considering what to do when Mr. Rabbit shows up. MR. RABBIT Hey kids, Elinor’s asleep so I thought I’d come out here and give you a... (noticing) ...what are you looking at? Mr. Rabbit gets down and joins them on the ground. Ari We THINK it’s a carrot. MR. RABBIT What makes you think that? OlIVE Well it has the same green fuzzy leaves as my carrot drawing. ArI And when we looked closer we saw this orange part. Mr. RABBIT Great investigating kids. You’re right -- it IS a carrot! Ari I KNEW it! OliVE But what’s a carrot doing in the ground? Mr. RABBIT Carrots aren’t like tomatoes and beans, Olive. The yummy part of a carrot grows underground. ArI Really? Cool! I imagine that both Ari and Olive might say "That's so interesting" laugh and look up to Elinors window OliVE That is soo interesting, but...how do you get a carrot OUT of the ground. do they each pull a carrot? Mr. RABBIT Maybe get more vocab in "Grab the STEM, the green that's close to the ground and pull" You just give it a pull. Go ahead. Ari and Olive pull the carrot OUT of the ground, falling over backwards as they do. OlIVE WOW! Fun ARI We pulled it right out! See? The yummy part you eat is…. Mr. RABBIT See? The yummy eating part is actually the root of the carrot plant. That’s why carrots are called root vegetables. CLOSE ON: the carrot. OlIVE Root vegetables. I LIKE those words. MR. RABBIT Beets are root vegetables too. OLIVE Oh, that’s why we couldn’t find them either. MR. RABBIT And so are turnips and potatoes, and we have them all -- ready to dig up in the garden. Ari Did you say dig? OlIVE Ari loves to dig. Either visually or in words...kids should be looking at the drawing of the beets green leafy parts and looking for that in the garden. They have uncovered the process for finding root vegetables. ARI I really do! SONG MONTAGE As they sing Ari and Olive (with Mr. Rabbit’s help) dig up the root veggies. Olive/ari OLIVE: Veggies are delicious, Veggies are the best. ARI: But did you know, Some veggies grow, Down deeper than the rest. OLIVE: The yummy part of a tomato, Grows out in the sun. ARI: But the yummy part of a carrot grows... Way down Underground. Then they bring the veggies into the kitchen and make the soup. BOTH: Root veggies, root veggies, We all love our root veggies, Beets and potatoes, Carrots and turnips too, Root veggies are so yummy, And they make great soup for you! 11. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM -- DAY Later that afternoon, Elinor is awake. Mister Rabbit comes into her room and sits on her bed. MR. RABBIT How are you feeling, honey bunny. Elinor stretches and yawns. ElINOR A little better. Not so sniffly. And I’m not sneezing any more. MR. RABBIT Good. Ready for another adventure story? ELINOR Uh-huh. when we have a thought bubble, we pan the camera up to it - no longer seeing the characters below - therefore i suggest not having the thought bubble until after 108 - when we see ari and olive march out to the garden - otherwise there's a lot of dialogue with very little happening ie. elinor in bed. MR. RABBIT You’re gonna like this one. It’s about the time Explorer Elinor had to stay in bed because of her sniffles. THOUGHT BUBBLE APPEARS - Elinor in bed. ELINOR Ooooh, I know how she feels. MR. RABBIT But it gets more exciting because her two friends Explorer Olive and Explorer Ari decide to do something to make her feel better. ELINOR Really? MR. RABBIT Yep, they go on an Exploring Adventure in the garden to find everything they need to make Explorer Elinor her favourite soup. In the THOUGHT BUBBLE Olive and Ari march out into the Garden. ELINOR Backyard soup? after 110 - we pan down to see elinor in bed for her line 111. - and not have the bubble burst - then we will be back in her room for olive and ari to slide into her room calling out line 113 MR. RABBIT Yep, but THIS time they decided to use special veggies, ones where the yummy part grows underground, like potatoes, beets and carrots. The THOUGHT BUBBLE shows the veggies growing underground, then Olive and Ari pull them up. After this line, recap the part in the story where they couldn't find the veggies, until they learned about root veggies. ELINOR Carrots? I LOVE carrots! Just have Dad intro the kids here (surprise!), and then in conversation have Ari and Olive tell her they have a special name for this soup. What is it? Underground soup! MR. RABBIT And that’s why they decided to call their special soup.... Olive/Ari UNDERGROUND SOUP! The THOUGHT BUBBLE bursts revealing Ari holding a tray with a small bowl of soup, with Olive gesturing beside him like Vanna White. No more notes after this line. Thanks! ELiNOR Really? You made Underground Soup just for me? ARI Yup! Ari hands the tray to Mr. Rabbit who gets Elinor set up. OlIVE We wanted to cheer you up, Explorer Elinor.
