I feel like the science or the engineering 'take home message' needs to pop a little more. With the story that is here, two things come to mind to make the story more aligned with science and engineering learning goals. Theses might be an either/ or ...or of course if you find another solution (1) all living things need food, water, air, and SPACE" to survive....kids learn this at a young age but don't really understand what space means. Olive needs space to sleep and craft in her room. If books fill it then she can't live in in anymore. (2) you could highlight the engineering desing cycle more. The kids could try different solutions to sharing the books and persist past not successful attempts...evaluate the results and try something new. 1. EXT. Olive’s YARD – DAY We will be creating Olive backyard for "butterfly party" episode so we can revisit the location for this episode as well It’s OLIVE’S birthday, and she’s celebrating with a party outside at her house with her mom (MS. ELEPHANT) and some of her friends, including ELINOR, ARI, SALLY, and TITO . We open as the kids are finishing singing happy birthday. We pan over some of the characters singing: ELINOR Happy Birthday to you... it'll be nice to have ms.elephant singing along as well TITO (ENERGETICALLY) Happy BIRTHDAY to YOU... SALLY (EARNESTLY BUT OUT OF KEY) Happy biiiiiiiiiiirthday , dear Olive ... ARI (Dramatically) Happy BIRTHDAAAAAAAY to YOUUUUUUUU . We stop on Olive, who is wearing a birthday crown and looking excited, sitting in front of a beautifully decorated but clearly home-made cake. <SFX: WALLA, CHEER, YAY, CLAPPING>. Nearby there is a stack of presents (not too many). OLIVE (shee PISH , a bit shy) Aww , thanks everyone. MS. ELEPHANT Make a wish and blow out your candles, dear. She smiles, thinks for a second and then uses her trunk to blow out the candles on the cake <SFX: BLOW/TRUMPET> . Everyone cheers <SFX: WALLA, CHEER, YAY, CLAPPING> and her mom blow s her <SFX: trunk-trumpet >, too . ELINOR What did you wish for, Olive? In keeping with the show goals..could she wish for something kind for the earth...and to open her presents? OLIVE I wished... that I could open my presents right now! Can I open them, Mom ? They all look at MS. ELEPHANT . Ms. Elephant Well, I suppose that would be alright . We can cut the cake afterwards. G o ahead , sweetie . The kids <SFX: CHEER> . Ari looks to the kid next to him. for ari - as he's always hungry - perhaps he instead leans to the person next to him explaining how he hoped to eat the delicious cake - he's hungry! ARI Oooh , ohh , I hope she open s my present first. She’s going to love it! Elinor takes the top present from the pile and hands it to Olive. OLIVE This one is from ... Tito. Tito beams. Ari looks a bit impatient/disappointed. Olive open’s Tito’s present. OLIVE (CONT’D) It’s a book ! TITO It’s all a bout insects that start with the letter M. OLIVE (flipping through it) Moths, mites, millipedes. That’s MMMMMMarvelous . Thank you, Tito! Tito smiles. Back on Ari, still excited. ARI Ooh , I hope she open s mine next. Elinor hands Olive the next present. OLIVE This one is from ... Elinor. Elinor smiles. Ari slumps his shoulders . Olive opens Elinor’s present. OLIVE (CONT’D) It’s a book , too! ELINOR It’s about all the birds from around the world. cute idea to include the pop-up book - in design - as she opens the book fulyl the bird opens up (pop-up) she then closes it halfway then fully, halfway, then fully to make the wings look like they're flapping - kids 'oooohhh' 'cool!' OLIVE Wow! Ostriches and penguins and robins. And look at this! The book unfolds into a pop-up book with birds than can flap their wings. <SFX: Ooooooooooh > depending on staging - maybe elinor can lean in and olive gives her a hug OLIVE (CONT’D) Thank you Elinor! Ari sneaks over to the present pile and pulls his out of the stack and hands it to Olive. ARI (NONCHALANTLY) I think this one is next. I wonder who it’s from? OLIVE Oh, it’s from you, Ari! ARI I know! Open it! She opens it. OLIVE It’s a nother book ! ARI Not just any book. It’s a book ABOUT books! suggest we explain this a bit - have olive give a few examples - OLIVE Oh, it shows you all the different kinds of books there are. Amazing. Thank you , Ari! Ari looks very proud. CROSSFADE TO: we see the pile of books has grown to five. Ms. Elephant returns with plates for everyone. MS. Elephant O live , you got more books . How w onderful ! W hy don’t you take them up to your room while I set up for cake? The kids offer to help. <SFX: Walla we’ll help/I’ll come > They each grab a book and head into the house. 2. INT HALLWAY -- DAY Elinor, Olive, Ari, Tito and Sally are making their way to Olive’s room. ELINOR You sure got a lot of books today, Olive. olive Yeah, I have the best friends. Everyone know s how much I love books! they've mentioned 'books; in 28 and 29 - more natural to not say it again ex 'Where are you going to put them all?' ARI W here are you going to put all these books? OLIVE Where else? In my room. 3. INT OLIVE’s ROOM -- DAY Elinor and Ari and the other kids enter Olive’s room and we reveal: Olive’s room is FULL of books. There are stacks of books EVERYWHERE . ARI Wow, you have a LOT of books, Olive. Sally Where should we put them? The kids look for a place to put the books down. Comically bumping into each other. There’s no place to put them down! note the kids make a new stack along the window - this is a good area to add piles of books - between the bookcase and desk OLIVE Here, there’s a little room next to my bookshelf . The kids make a new stack, and then look around. ELINOR Have you read ALL these books, Olive? OLIVE Every single one! Sometimes more than once. Sally picks up a book near her . SALLY W ow , it’s a book about making things out of wood! I’d love to read this one. OLIVE Yeah, that one has really good ideas for projects. Tito picks up a book and opens it . TITO Cool, a book about running. I love to run. He runs a few laps around the room, dodging the kids and the stacks of books. olive or tito should react and give one of them a line - to the small pile falling over - 'whoops, sorry Olive' - he reaches down to stack them back up OLIVE Yeah, t hat’s a great book too, Tito. She runs a bit with Tito, <SFX: GIGGLING> . Whoops, they knock down a small pile of books. ELINOR Uh, Olive... pretty soon you won’t have much room left in your ... room. funny... ARI A room without room! Hah ! Get it? (off everyone’s look) But seriously, Olive. What are you going to do with all these books? OLIVE Keep them, of course! I like to keep them because I love books . Ari and Elinor look at each other with slight concern. At that moment, Olive’s mom calls out to them. if we add the line suggested above abotu ari wanting cake - he can have a line hear - stomach grumbles - rubs belly 'yup , i hear you' MS. Elephant (O.S.) Yoo hoo , kids, it’s time for cake! Ari’s stomach grumbles and the kids <SFX: CHEER> . OLIVE Oh yeah! The c ake! Tito and Sally set down the books they were holding and they all run out the door. As they leave, the camera lingers on a teetering stack of books near the door. 4. EXT. OLIVE’S YARD - DAY A cross-fade later, we open on a top view of Olive’s cake as Ms. Elephant passes out the slices. The kids are all sitting around the table. OLIVE Yay, banana birthday cake, my favorite! since ari is already eating - we will start the seq with a few of them already with cake - as Ms.elephant continues to hand out the last few - opening on a bit of cake left and knife on a tray ARI (munching) It’s SO GOOD. I wish we could have birthday cake every day. OLIVE You only get a birthday once a year, silly. ARI Sure , but every day is SOMEONE’s birthday. They all <SFX: GIGGLE> . Then something catches Elinor’s attention. "perhaps this first ant that catches her attention is carrying a piece of cake - - 'its also enjoying a piece of your birthday cake Olive' - they giggle . Line 52 ' wow its a whole bunch of ants - and they are all carrying seeds!' " ELINOR Ooh , look at that ant. She sees a small ant carrying a tiny (but big for the ant) seed off the table. ELINOR (CONT’D) I wonder where it ’ s taking that seed? Curious, she follows it down the table leg and onto the grass. Soon, she sees it join a trail of other ants carrying and pulling little seeds. ELINOR (CONT’D) W ow , it’s a whole bunch of ants! Other kids notice that Elinor is interested in something. OLIVE What are you looking at, Elinor? ELINOR All these ants. They ’ re carrying seeds somewhere. ARI Where are they going? ELINOR Let’s find out . We need MORE OBSERVATIONS ! Musical moment as the kids follow the trail of ants, like a trail of ants themselves: across the yard, and over a rock and a log. Soon, they arrive at the ant hill near the edge of Olive’s yard. ELINOR (CONT’D) It looks like they ’ re all going in there. OLIVE That’s where the ants live. It’s called an ant hill. ARI Cool! OLIVE There are THOUSANDS of ants inside. I read all about it in a book about ants I have in my room . In a THOUGHT BUBBLE, we see Olive’s ant book over her shoulder. It shows a few ants carrying a little seed on the cover. She opens it, and we see a cutout diagram of an ant hill. Olive (CONT’D) Anthills have lots of little rooms under the ground that all the ants share. The bubble pops. Elinor looks at the ants entering the ant hill. ELINOR Wow, that’s so cool. What are they doing with all those seeds? Olive looks more closely at the ants . OLIVE I think these are harvester ants. It’s a special kind of ant that bring s seeds back to the anthill to eat . Hum. That seed is bigger than the ant's belly. ari Hmm. Th at seed is so big. Isn’t that too much food for one ant? OLIVE I read about that in my book, too! The ants share their food with each other. We see a nother THOUGHT BUBBLE . OLIVE (CONT’D) They put all the seeds in a special room. And the n the other ants come and help themselves when they ’ re hungry. SALLY How nice. That way everyone gets something to eat. ELINOR Wow, that is SO INTERESTING. sally I wish I knew as much about ants as you d o , Olive. TITO Me too. That ant book sounds really fun to read. OLIVE It’s a great book. Y ou know what? I’ll go get it from my room and show it to you. Wait here! Olive leaves the group as she crosses the yard to go back into the house. 5. INT. OLIVE’S ROOM - DAY Back in her room, Olive looks for her ant book among the big mess of books. OLIVE Hmmm, that’s not it. That’s not it. Where i s it? After a beat, s he finds it. OLIVE (CONT’D) Aha! Here it is! She finds the book near the bottom of a large stack. She tugs on it, and the tower of books teeters slightly. OLIVE (CONT’D) (grunting slightly) Come out, little book. Olive tries to carefully pull on it, but it seems to be stuck. Finally, she gives it a yank and pulls it out . OLIVE (CONT’D) Uh oh! The stack of books teeters. Olive backs up, and oops, trips on some other books and falls into a stack of books as the other stack teeters and... 6. EXT. OLIVE’S BACK YARD -- DAY Outside, we hear a distant thump, as the kids are waiting near the ant hill. Most of the kids are still admiring the ants, but Elinor takes notice. ELINOR Hmm, Olive is taking a long time. ARI Wasn’t she just getting that book? SALLY She should be back by now. They look at each other, remembering her messy stacks of books. ELINOR Maybe we should go check on her. 7. INT. OLIVE’S ROOM - DAY A cross-fade later, Elinor and Ari approach the room. The entrance is slightly blocked by toppled stacks of books. As they make their way in, they call out : ARI Olive? Are you in there? OLIVE I’m here! She’s splayed out on top of some more toppled books , still holding the book she pulled out . OLIVE (CONT’D) Could I get a little help? Elinor and Ari help her up. elinor What happened? OLIVE I was trying to get the ant book from under some other book s , so I pull ed on it, but then I fell into this pile of books . ARI No wonder. It’s a book-o-rama in here! Tito and Sally come in. Tito Are you ok , Olive? OLIVE Yeah, I think there might be a few too many books in here. elinor You do have a lot of books for one kid . OLIVE But what can I do? They all scratch their heads for a beat. Olive looks at the book she’s been holding all this time. It’s the ant book . She looks at the cover drawing of the ants sharing a seed , and has an epiphany. OLIVE (CONT’D) I know. Maybe I should be like the ants! ELINOR What do you mean? OLIVE Remember how I told you that ants share their food? ELINOR Oooh ... ARI (smacks his lips) You want to share food with us? OLIVE No, I should share my books! Olive goes over to Sally and hands her the woodworking book near her. OLIVE (CONT’D) Sally, did you say you wanted read this book? SALLY Yeah. OLIVE I’ll share it with you. Please, take it home. SALLY Oh, thank you! I thought he wanted to book on running? OLIVE Tito, here is the ant book you wanted to read. TITO Wow, really? OLIVE You can borrow it as long as you like. And when you’re done, you can share it with other kids too. TITO Thanks, I will! ELINOR Are you sure you want to share ALL your books, Olive? OLIVE Well, I have my extra special books in this bookcase. I want to keep those here. And, I want to keep all the books I got as presents today. But the rest are books I ’m happy to share. Ari looks around at all the books. ARI How are you going to share ALL these books ? The re are too many to carry around town. TITO You could put them around your house? ELINOR Or maybe outside, so everyone can get to them. ARI But what if it rains ? Just then, Sally looks up from her book. SALLY I have an idea. You know how ants have a special place where they put all the food they share? We see a thought bubble of the ant food chamber from before . SALLY (CONT’D) Maybe we can make a special place for the books you want to share, just like the ants do? She opens the woodworking book to a page that shows a mini-library project (a small standing cabinet, like the kind you see outside schools or homes). The kids look excitedly at the book. ELINOR Wow! That way ever y one can come borrow a book . ARI Cool! And they will stay dry. OLIVE A mini-library! Let’s do it! W e launch into a ditty with the kids dancing and sharing books and building the mini-library together outside (Sally Beaver, with her awesome beaver teeth, cuts the pieces in no time, while Ms. Elephant helps them assemble) . ELINOR/ARI/OLIVE Here a book, there a book Look, look, share a book! It’s fun to share ‘Cause it shows you care! Want to learn about silly hats? Well, Olive’s got A book about that! Want to know Why cows say moo? Well, Olive’s got Just the book for you! Take a book, give a book Look, look, share a book! It’s fun to share ‘Cause it shows you care! 8. EXT. FRONT OF OLIVE’S HOUSE After the song, we see that the mini-library is finished, and Olive is finishing putting in some books. Ari and Elinor come huffing down the path, carrying some books. ELINOR I brought some books from my house to share. ARI Me too! I’ve got one about rocket ships , and one about cars and one about muffins. SALLY I’ve got books to share too! I’ll bring them later. TITO Me too! The kids all smile at the success of their project. OLIVE Thank you guys for coming to my party. ELINOR It was really fun. ARI And we learned a lot ! OLIVE I think t his is the best gift ever: my own little library. elinor And its for everyone to share. olive Yeah, because everything is always better when you share. ARI ANT that ’s the truth.
