1. EXT. ELINOR’S HOUSE - DAY Olive and Ari arrive at Elinor’s house, playfully <SFX: GIGGLING> ready for a great play day, Ari <SFX: KNOCKS> and Mr. Rabbit opens the door. Ari Hi, Mister Rabbit. Can Elinor come out and play? Mr. Rabbit Sorry, kids. Elinor can’t play outside today, she’s in bed with a sore foot. OLIVE (with concern) Oh, no! What happened? MR. RABBIT Nothing to worry about, just a little bunny-hopping accident. Ari Can we visit her? Maybe we can cheer her up. Mr. RABBIT That’s a really nice idea, kids. She’ll be so glad to see you. Off they go. 2. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM - DAY The kids stay by the door as Mr. Rabbit enters and sits on Elinor’s bed. Mr. RABBIT Hey, hunny bunny. You have some visitors. Olive and Ari walk up to Elinor’s bed. OlIVE Hi, Elinor, how are you feeling? Ari Does your foot hurt? ELINOR Yeah, a little. I’m not a hoppy bunny today. MR. RABBIT Not to worry, kids, Elinor will be better soon, she just needs to rest. ArI And then, have a snack! Snacks always make me feel better. OliVE And stories! My Mom always reads me stories to cheer me up. ELINOR Oooh, stories. That sounds good. Mr. RABBIT Luckily Elinor has her own official story-book reader. ArI (impressed) She DOES? Now THAT is cool! Olive (smiling) I think Mr. Rabbit is saying he’s the story-book reader. Mr. RABBIT Yep, that’s me! And I’ll be back in a sec to perform my official story-reading duties. Just let me show your visitors out. Elinor Okay Daddy. Adventure stories please! Ari Bye, Elinor. OliVE Get better soon. ELINOR Thanks for visiting me! 3. INT. STAIRS/FRONT FOYER -- DAY The kids and Mr. Rabbit walk down the stairs to the front door. Olive I wish we could do something for Elinor to help her feel better. Ari Hmmmm, sometimes when I’m not feeling good my mom makes me soup. Mr. RABBIT Actually I was planning on making Elinor a batch of her favorite - Backyard Soup. Olive Backyard soup? What’s Backyard Soup? Ari Backyard Soup is the yummiest soup ever, I had some with Elinor and her parents once. They make it with all the veggies they grow in the back yard. OlIVE Really? That sounds soooo delicious. Can we help you make it, Mr. Rabbit? MR. RABBIT Why sure, that would be great, kids. You could pick the veggies from the garden. He gestures towards the kitchen and they walk towards it. Olive We sure could! But which veggies should we pick? 4. INT. Kitchen -- day They enter the kitchen. MR. RABBIT Well, let’s see. We’ll need tomatoes, beans, beets and carrots to start. ArI Whoa that’s a LOTTA veggies. How are we gonna remember all those? OlIVE Can you make us a list, Mr. Rabbit? Olive takes out her notebook and crayons and hands them to Mr. Rabbit, who draws on the kitchen table. MR. RABBIT Good idea Olive. First we need round, red tomatoes. ANGLE ON: Mr. Rabbit draws tomatoes. Ari Then some long skinny green beans. I love those. ANGLE ON: Mr. Rabbit draws long, skinny green beans. Olive Also some beets. Those are purple. Mr. Rabbit draws purple beets with green tops. Mr. RABBIT Okay, I think that’s it for now. Ari Uhh, Mr. Rabbit, aren’t you forgetting something...? OlIVE Elinor’s FAVORITE... Mr. RABBIT CARROTS! I almost forgot. Good thing I’ve got you kids around to help me out. (he draws orange carrots with some green leafy tops) So, can you two pick the veggies from the garden while I go and read to Elinor? OlIVE Sure thing, Mr. Rabbit, we’re good helpers. Ari It’s kind of our thing. Let’s go get those veggies. Olive waves her notebook as they head out to the garden. Mr. Rabbit waves back. 5. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM – DAY Dad enters with Elinor’s favorite adventure book and a glass of water. Mr. RABBIT Ready for a story, hunny bunny? EliNOR Yes, please, official story-book reader. An ADVENTURE story. MR. RABBIT Ah, yes. An ADVENTURE story. (he opens the books and reads) It was a beautiful day for an adventure and our Brave Explorer… ElinOR Not just any Explorer Daddy... Explorer ELINOR. MR. RABBIT Of course, my mistake, Explorer ELINOR. 6. EXT. BACK YARD -- DAY In the back yard Olive and Ari search the garden. OlIVE Okay, let's find these veggies. First, we need round red tomatoes. ArI Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes - oh, there they are! They’re growing on those plants. ANGLE ON: Plump red tomatoes high up on a staked tomato plant. OLIVE Wow! The tomatoes are so big the plants need to be held up by sticks. Ari adds them to the basket. Olive checks the list. OLIVE ( CONT’D ) That was easy. Next veggie, beans. ARI Not just any beans, long green yummy beans. (calling) Beans! Beans! Where are you beans? OLIVE Oh, I see them. They’re growing on the middle of those vines. ANGLE ON: The beans vines climbing poles. Olive checks beans off her list. OLIVE ( CONT’D ) We already found two of the veggies. We'll be done in no time. 7. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM – DAY Dad is reading to Elinor as she snuggles in bed. MR. RABBIT Explorer Elinor was having the best adventure EVER. First she climbed a mountain. EliNOR A mountain? Was it very high? THOUGHT BUBBLE - Elinor climbing a mountain that gets higher and higher. MR. RABBIT The highest mountain you’ve ever seen! Then she swam down to the bottom of the ocean. THOUGHT BUBBLE - Elinor swimming down to the bottom of the ocean. ELINOR A deep ocean? MR. RABBIT The deepest. Then she swung sideways through the jungle on a vine. THOUGHT BUBBLE - Elinor swings through the jungle, as we pan down. ELINOR Wheeeeeeee!! That IS an amazing adventure, official storybook reader. MR. RABBIT Glad you like it, Explorer Elinor. 8. EXT. ELINOR’S BACK YARD - DAY Ari and Olive are almost finished with their list. They have gathered all the veggies except for the carrots. Olive Okay, we’ve almost finished our list... all we need are beets. ArI ...and carrots! You can’t forget carrots! OLIVE Right, beets and carrots. Well, those should be easy to find because the beets are purple and the carrots are orange. ARI Yep, they should be pretty easy to spot in all these green leaves. Let's see... orange carrots.. Orange, orange, orange... Huh. I don't see any orange veggies. Then Olive tries looking for the beets. Olive Let’s try the purple beets. Purple, purple, purple... I don't see any purple beets either. Where are they? 9. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM - DAY Mister Rabbit is in mid-sentence. MR. RABBIT ...finally Explorer Elinor was happy to be back in her nice comfy bed, the end. (He hears a little <SFX: SNOORE> and looks over to see that Elinor has dozed off. He gives his daughter a little kiss on the forehead. ) Have a good rest, hunny bunny. He tiptoes out. 10. EXT. ELINOR’S GARDEN -- DAY Ari is looking around, as Olive checks the “harvesting list” one more time. ArI Where are the carrots and beets? Mr. Rabbtit said we needed them for the soup so they must be around here somewhere. Hmmm. What would Elinor do? OliVE She'd say, we need more observations! Let's look more closely at our veggie list. They both look at the list. ANGLE ON: The drawing of the carrot. Olive ( CONT’D ) Wait a minute, Ari, look at this. The carrot isn’t just the pointy orange part, it has these green leaves at the end. Maybe we should look for those leaves. ARI Good idea. ( looks around) Look! Over there! Ari points. ANGLE ON: Carrot greens. Olive runs over and checks them out. OlIVE This is it, Ari. These leaves look like the leaves in the drawing – green and fuzzy. But where is the pointy orange carrot part? Ari looks down really low. Ari Hey Olive, check this out! ANGLE ON: Ari notices a tiny spot of orange poking out of the earth - he moves the dirt away. OLIVE Wow, it looks like the top of an orange carrot, but it’s buried underground. ArI Should we dig it up? Olive shrugs. The kids are considering what to do when Mr. Rabbit shows up. MR. RABBIT Hey kids, Elinor’s asleep so I thought I’d come out and give you a... (noticing) ...what are you looking at? Mr. Rabbit gets down and joins them on the ground. OlIVE We’re looking at a veggie mystery, Mr. Rabbit. Ari We've been trying to find carrots, but we haven't found any. We thought they would be growing on the plant, like tomatoes and beans. But now we think THIS is the carrot. Ari points to the carrot top. MR. RABBIT I see. And what makes you think that? OlIVE Well it has the same green fuzzy leaves that we always see on carrots. ArI And when we looked closer we saw this orange part peeking from the ground. Mr. RABBIT Great investigating kids. You’re right -- it IS a carrot! Ari I KNEW it! OliVE But why is the carrot under the ground? Mr. RABBIT Carrots aren’t like tomatoes and beans, Olive. The part that we like to eat is actually the root of the plant. That’s why it’s underground. As Mr. Rabbit talks, we see a THOUGHT BUBBLE showing a cross section of the garden that shows the orange part of the carrot under the ground <SFX: KIDS WHOA WALLA>. OliVE/ari That is soo interesting. They both <SFX: LAUGH> ARI But... how do you get the carrot OUT of the ground? Mr. RABBIT You just give the plant a pull. Go ahead. Ari and Olive each pull a carrot OUT of the ground, falling over backwards as they do. <SFX: WHOA, GIGGLE> Mr. RABBIT ( CONT’D ) See? The orange part is the root. That’s why carrots are called root vegetables. CLOSE ON: The carrot. OlIVE Root vegetables. I LIKE those words. Ari looks to Mr. Rabbit. Ari So are beets root vegetables too? We haven’t found those either. mR. RABBIT Yep. And so are turnips, radishes and potatoes, and we have them all -- ready to dig up in the garden. Ari Did you say dig? I LOVE to dig! SONG MONTAGE As they sing Ari, and Olive look at drawings of the veggies’ green leafy parts (carrots, beets, radishes, turnips, potatoes) and look for them in the garden. They have uncovered the process for finding root vegetables. Maybe Olive draws a brown dirt line in her notebook. Then they dig up the veggies. Olive/ari OLIVE: Veggies are delicious, Veggies are the best. ARI: But did you know, That some veggies grow, Down deeper than the rest. BOTH: Root veggies, root veggies, We all love our root veggies. OLIVE: The yummiest part of the tomato, It grows out in the sunlight. ARI: But the yummiest part of the carrot grows... Way down Underground. BOTH: Root veggies, root veggies, We all love our root veggies, Beets and potatoes, Carrots and turnips, Root veggies are so yummy, And they make great soup for you and me! 11. INT. ELINOR’S ROOM -- DAY Later that afternoon, Elinor is awake. Mister Rabbit comes into her room and sits on her bed. MR. RABBIT How are you feeling, honey bunny. Elinor stretches and yawns. ElINOR A little better. My foot doesn’t hurt as much. MR. RABBIT Good. Ready for another adventure story? ELINOR Uh-huh. MR. RABBIT You’re gonna like this one. It’s about the time Explorer Elinor had to stay in bed because her foot was sore. ELINOR Ooooh , I know how that feels. MR. RABBIT But it gets more exciting because her two friends Explorer Olive and Explorer Ari decided to do something to make her feel better. ELINOR Really? MR. RABBIT Yep, they went on an Adventure in the garden to find vegetables to make Explorer Elinor her favorite soup. THOUGHT BUBBLE Olive and Ari march out into the Garden. ELINOR I like this story. MR. RABBIT They found almost all the veggies, but then there were some they couldn't find. PAN DOWN: to Elinor and her Dad. ELINOR Oh, no, then what happened? MR. RABBIT Mmm , maybe I should let THEM finish the story. Ari and Olive walk in with a tray and a bowl of soup on it covered by a napkin. Ari Hi, Elinor. We looked for beets and carrots everywhere, but we couldn’t find them! THOUGHT BUBBLE FORMS : Illustrating the story. Olive We looked and looked... until finally we found our treasure. The veggies were buried under the ground! ARI That’s right. We learned that some veggies are actually roots, and that’s why they grow underground. olive So we decided to call our special soup.... Pan down to reveal: They pull the napkin away revealing. Olive/Ari UNDERGROUND SOUP Elinor Aww, thank you, Explorers Ari and Olive. Ari hands the tray to Mr. Rabbit, who sets it up for Elinor. She takes a sip. Elinor ( CONT’D ) <Slurrrup> . Ah, now I really DO feel better. Ari and Olive exchange a happy look. ArI (to Mr. Rabbit) Told ya we were good helpers. Elinor takes another sip <SFX: mmmm> , we IRIS OUT, SEGMENT 2. 1. EXT FOREST -- EARLY AUTUMN DAY ARI, OLIVE and ELINOR come up to Mz . Mole, who is sitting by her garden. MZ . MOLE Well hello, kids! ELINOR Hi Mz . Mole! We came to help you pick veggies from your garden! OLIVE Yes, we are expert veggie-pickers. ARI And eaters! MZ MOLE Wonderful! Thanks for your help! Follow me. She reaches down and opens the door to her house ( Mz . Mole lives in an underground burrow), and walks down. The kids look confused, but follow her down. 2. INT MZ . MOLE’S KITCHEN -- DAY The kids emerge in the kitchen where there is a small step ladder in the middle of your room. Mz . Mole climbs up the ladder. There’s a book on a convenient surface nearby. ELINOR Mz . Mole, why are we going inside your house? OLIVE Isn’t your garden outside? MZ MOLE It is, but some of my favorite veggies grow underground. Look! Mz . Mole reaches up to the ceiling and sticks her arm into the overhead dirt. CUT TO: 3. EXT. Mz . Mole’s garden Above ground, we see a row of green leafy plants. The left most one (a radish) jiggles and then disappears into the ground with a <SFX: SCHWOOP!> . CUT TO: 4. INT. MZ . MOLE’S KITCHEN -- DAY We see Mz . Mole has pulled out a purple radish. The kids <SFX: WALLA OOH / AAH /WOW!>. olive It’s a radish! ELINOR Why do some veggies grow underground, Mz Mole? MZ MOLE (holding up the radish) Sometimes, the part of the plant we eat is the root, and that grows under the ground. She comes down the ladder and hands the radish to Ari, who brushes off the dirt and takes a bite. ARI And it’s delicious! They all <SFX: GIGGLE>. MZ MOLE There are LOTS of different root vegetables. Take a look in this book! She picks up the book. 5. INT. POP-UP BOOK (Cross-section) - DAY We transition to a simpler pop-up book animation style that shows a cross-section of her kitchen and the garden above. As she talks, we push/pan and see several vegetables of different shapes and sizes. MZ MOLE Onions... ELINOR Yum . MZ MOLE ...radishes ... ELINOR Mmmmm . MZ MOLE ...garlic ... ELINOR Mmmm hmmmm . MZ MOLE ...potatoes ... ARI What? Potatoes grow under ground? Mind. Blown. MZ MOLE ...rutabagas ... OLIVE Rutabagas. I like that word. We transition back to Mz Mole’s kitchen. 6. INT. MZ . MOLE’S KITCHEN Mz . Mole closes the book. MZ MOLE ...and of course, carrots! Mz . Mole climbs up the ladder and pulls a purple carrot from her roof. ELINOR Wait a minute, that’s not a carrot. It’s purple! MZ MOLE Yes, it is! Carrots grow in all different colors: purple, white, orange, yellow and red! As she names each color, she pulls out a colorful carrot and hands it to Elinor. OLIVE Wow, there are so many pretty colors. ELINOR Look, It’s a rainbow of root veggies! We see a rainbow of colorful carrots in Mz . Mole’s arms. ARI Gorgeous AND delicious. END

Logline: E linor’s in bed with a case of the sniffles, so Olive and Ari decide to make some soup to help her feel better, but they can’t find the carrots. CURRICULUM GOALS LS8 .
