1. INT ELINOR’s KITCHEN -- DAY We open on the oven, and see MR. RABBIT pulling out a tray of cupcakes. MR. RABBit That’s the last batch, kids, they are aaaaaaall done! He sets the tray on the table. The kids all <SFX:CHEER> . We pull out to see ELINOR, ARI and OLIVE sitting around the table. There are a few other batches of cupcakes cooling around the kitchen. The kids are stacking cupcakes onto a plate. ELINOR I can’t wait to set up our carrot cupcake stand. OLIVE Me too, Elinor! I bet everyone is going to love our cupcakes. ARI Yeah, they smell SO GOOD! Ahhhhh ...! Ari leans over the cupcakes and takes a long whiff with a dramatic flair. Olive and Elinor giggle. Olive is surrounded by colored paper and crayons. OLIVE I’m almost done with our sign. What do you guys think? She shows off the sign she made for their stand: a modest sheet with a doodle of a cupcake and carrots. ELINOR It looks great, Olive! ARI Yeah, it’s... making me... want... to... grab a cupcake... Ari pretends that his hand is acting on its own and reaching for a cupcake. His other hand is holding it back. Mr. Rabbit Now, now, Ari. Remember they are for your cupcake stand , to share with everyone at the park. Ari drops his hands and goes <SFX: AWWW...> . ARI But shouldn’t we taste one? You know, just to make sure they came out OK? Mr. Rabbit points to the now empty bowls and utensils they used to make the cupcakes. MR. RABBIT Well, you already tasted the ingredients on their own , then again when we mixed them to make the batter, and THEN you tasted a cupcake from the first batch. If you keep “tasting” so much, there won’t be any left for everyone else! ARI BUT, what if something went wrong in the oven this time? We have to make sure they taste good . Mr. Rabbit looks skeptical. ARI (CONT’D) It’s called “ Double Checking .” Mr. Rabbit smiles, then relents amusingly. Mr. Rabbit Oh, OK... He cuts a cupcake in four pieces and they all try it. ELINOR Wow, they are so good! Olive Really good. Everyone is going to love them . MR . RABBIT MMmmm . Not bad, if I do say so myself. ARI (after swallowing a big gulp of food)) It’s a good thing we double- checked . Everyone <SFX: GIGGLES>. They finish stacking the cupcakes and then head out to the park, very optimistic. 2. EXT PARK -- DAY It’s a fine day at the park and there are several town residents hanging out doing fun park activities. GEE RAFFE and DEPUTY MOUSE are sitting on a bench sharing a smoothie . (We don’t see Gee Raffe’s head, just a really long straw). KOA and SILAS are throwing a ball. We see Koa throw it and Silas zoooom to where the ball will land comically long before it gets there, maybe yawning as he waits for the ball to arrive. Elinor, Ari and Olive walk in towards the middle of the area carrying some items: Olive has her SATCHEL and is carrying a small folding table, Elinor is carrying their sign, and Ari is coming up behind them, holding up the plate of cupcakes with one hand, like a waiter. ELINOR This is going to be so fun! Ari Handing out t hese cupcakes are going to make everyone’s day! At that moment, Ari trips over something. Ari (CONT’D) Whoops... Whoa... WHOA! He loses his balance, struggles to keep the plate up, but... he stumbles backwards, sending the plate of cupcakes up into the air! ARI (CONT’D) Ahh ! In typical cartoon fashion, he runs around, catching the plate first and then the cupcakes one at a time as they fall and stack perfectly back on the plate. ARI (CONT’D) Phew! Olive and Elinor peek back on screen (they hadn’t even noticed). Olive Coming, Ari? Ari composes himself and, glancing sideways as if nothing happened, continues on. ARI Yep. (Phew!) Soon, the kids arrive at the spot in the park where they want to set up. Ari sets the cupcakes down and helps Ol i ve unfold the table . Olive then rolls over a small log resting in the grass for them to sit on, and Elinor puts up the sign in front of the table. OLIVE I can’t wait for everyone to try our cupcakes. I bet we’ll run out! Elinor Yeah! The kids put the cupcake plate on the table, nothing fancy. They take a moment to admire their work, and then sit down, expectantly. ARI (projecting) OK! Who wants some delicious cupcakes? Nothing happens. The kids glance around. The animals in the park continue doing their activities, but nobody comes over to them. ELINOR (PROJECTING) Ahem ! We have some cupcakes here... They twiddle their thumbs (or trunk, in Olive’s case). Nobody comes over. OLIVE ( PROJECTING BUT meekly) Really tasty cupcakes! Still nothing. Finally, Ari stands up, exasperated. ARI (PROJECTING LOUDER) I SAID: Who wants some cupcakes?! Unfortunately, it’s a beautiful day, and everyone seems to be enjoying their park activities. ELINOR Is ANYONE going to have a cupcake? Ari looks up. He reaches for a cupcake. ELINOR (CONT’D) I didn’t mean YOU, Ari. Ari drops his hand. <SFX: AWWW> More time passes, but nobody stops by and the kids’ excitement is starting to wane. The kids are looking a little bored, when suddenly, a ball rolls over in their direction. KOA Oh hey, guys. I didn’t notice you over here. Whatcha doing? OLIVE Hi, Koa. We made some really tasty cupcakes. ARI And set up this awesome cupcake stand. ELINOR But nobody has come by to have one . Koa takes in the situation. The kids let out a collective <SFX: SIGH>. Koa Aww , that’s a bummer. Nobody has stopped by? At that moment, a bee buzzes by overhead, catching Elinor’s attention. She watches curiously as the bee heads straight for some nearby trees at the edge of the clearing. Ari collapses in mock-dramatic despair. ARI Not even one! OLIVE And the cupcakes are SO good . Suddenly, another bee buzzes by. Elinor watches as the bee heads in the exact same direction. Elinor’s curiosity is piqued. Elinor Whoa, did you guys see that? OLIVE What is it, Elinor? ELINOR First, I saw a bee fly by and go to those trees... And then I saw ANOTHER bee do the same thing. Another bee goes by . KOA Oh, yeah, there goes another one . ELINOR I wonder where they’re going... Elinor gets up and follows the bee. Ari Elinor, where are you going? ELINOR I’m following those bees ! Ari gets curious and follows her. Olive and Koa look at each other. OLIVE Koa, will you keep an eye on our cupcake stand for a minute? You can have a cupcake! Koa Um ... Sure thing ! And thanks for the cupcake! Olive follows Ari and Elinor. Koa flops down on the log and happily grabs a cupcake. 3. EXT FOREST -- DAY The kids go into the trees to see where the bees went. ARI I think the bees went this way . The kids look around for the bees but can’t spot them. OLIVE Where did they go? For a beat they can’t find the bees. Suddenly, another bee comes up behind them. ELINOR There’s another one! Let’s follow it! The kids follow the second bee. As they’re following, Olive takes a sniff with her trunk. OLIVE Mmm , do you smell that? It smells nice. The kids walk a bit, then they see another bee come up behind them and they follow it. Olive smells the air again. OLIVE (CONT’D) There! I smell it again. It s mells even stronger now. ARI What is it? OLIVE It smells like... flowers! They emerge into a small clearing with bushes that have colorful flowers. There are bees buzzing around. Some bees are arriving and some are leaving. There are other bushes nearby without flowers and without bees. Ari Whoa. ELINOR Wow, look at all the bees! OLIVE And the colorful flowers! We zoom in a bit to see the bees buzzing around the flowers. ELINOR Look, the bees are all buzzing around the flowers. ARI W hy are they all here? Olive remembers something. OLIVE Hmm, I remember reading about this in my nature book. The kids move a little closer to one of the flower bushes. We SCIENCE CLOSE UP: one of the bees landing on a flower. OLIVE (CONT’D) Bees like to drink the juice that’s inside of flowers. It’s called nectar. E CU: we see the bee sipping up some of the nectar from the flower. ARI Ohhh , so that’s why they’re here. They are having a snack! Elinor looks around at the flowers. ELINOR Well, there are lots of flowers here. That must be why there are so many bees. Elinor looks back from where they came and gets curious again. ELINOR (CONT’D) But I wonder... how did the bees FIND these flowers? ARI What do you mean? Elinor points back towards the path they took to get here. ELINOR I mean, how did they know how to get here? WE followed the bees to get here. But how did the BEES find this place ? OLIVE Huh, you’re right. This place IS kind of hard to find. ARI Yeah, if we HADN’T followed the bees, I don’t think we would have ever found these flowers. ELINOR Hmmm ... That’s SO interesting! We need MORE observations. The kids move behind a bush or a log to observe the bees and the flowers. ELINOR (CONT’D) Ok , how did the bees find the flowers? ARI I know! Maybe they have a map? My parents use a map to find our way when we go hiking. A thought bubble forms above Ari, showing his family walking around with a map. OLIVE I don’t think bees can carry maps. But maybe they followed some signs? A thought bubble forms above Olive showing her walking around the town center, guided by some walkway signs. ELINOR But I didn’t see any signs in the forest, did you? OLIVE No. Hmm... ELINOR I know! Why don’t we “think like bees” to figure it out? OLIVE Think like bees? ELINOR Yeah, let’s imagine that WE are bees. If I w ere a bee, how would I find where the flowers are? ARI I can do that! Let me try. Ari pretends to be a bee, flying around. ARI (CONT’D) Bzzzz ... Where are the flowers? Any flowers over here? Calling all flowers. Ari comes back down. ARI (CONT’D) Ahh , I always wanted to BEE a bee. Get it? Bee a bee? Elinor and Olive <SFX: GIGGLES> ELINOR What did you notice, Ari? ARI Well, at first I couldn’t find the flowers, but then when I got close enough, it was pretty easy to SEE the flowers. That’s because they’re so bright and colorful. OLIVE You’re right. Flowers are easy to see. ELINOR Hmm, I never thought about that before. The bright colors makes them easy to find. All the flowers around them are bright and colorful. OLIVE So maybe that’s how the bees find the flowers! By their color! ELINOR Yeah... but that only works when they’re close enough to SEE the flowers. How do they find the flowers from far away? Ari is at a flower, looking at it closely. ARI Mmm , I like how these flowers smell. At this, Olive <SFX: SNIFF, SNIFFS> with her trunk and has a realization. OLIVE Wait. I remember I could SMELL the flowers before we even saw them. I didn’t smell them very much, but when we got closer I could smell them a lot more. Elinor picks up on the thread. ELINOR That’s it! T he bees must have followed the flower smell to get here ! Ari closes his eyes and buzzes like a bee again, <SFX: SNIFFING> around. ARI I can definitely tell where the flowers are by their smell. OLIVE I get it. When they ’ re far away, the bees smell the flowers ... ELINOR ... And once they are closer , they can see their bright colors . We figured it out! The kids high five each other over <SFX: YAY WALLA>. Ari looks at the flowers. ARI Wow, the flowers look AND smell good. T hat’s such a smart way for the flowers to get the bees to come over. Elinor thinks for a moment <SFX: HMMM...> , then has another realization. ELINOR <GASP!> Olive, Ari, I think I figured out how to get others to come try our cupcakes! OLIVE How? ELINOR We’ll make our cupcake stand like the FLOWERS, so everyone else can find us! Follow me! They all head back towards the park. 4. EXT PARK – SHORT TIME LATER A short time later, Olive arrives back at the table carrying her colored papers and crayons. She joins the other kids (including Koa). OLIVE Ok , Elinor . H ere is all the colored papers and crayons from the house. ELINOR Great, let’s make our cupcake stand easy to find! They get to work decorating the table. While they work, they sing: ELINOR/OLIVE/ARI Bzzzz bzzz bzzzz Think like a bee Bees find flowers So cleverly Bzzzz bzzz bzzz Think like a bee Let’s make our table So bright to see Bzzz bzz bzzz We can tell Bees find flowers By f ollowing their smell Bzzzz bzzz bzzzz Think like a bee Now our table Is easy to see ! When they are done, the table looks like a big beautiful flower. Some paper has also been made into a hand-fan . KOA Whoa, everyone will definitely be able to find your cupcake stand now ! OLiVE Thank you, Koa! I hope it works. ari But what is t he fan for ? ELINOR I’ll show you! She fans the cupcakes. ARI Oh, good idea, Elinor! Spread that yummy smell around! We see little squiggles of air waft from the cupcakes and out into the surrounding area. Cut to Gee Raffe and Deputy Mouse, who are finishing their drink. Deputy Mouse sniffs the air curiously. DEPUTY MOUSE <Sniff> Mmmmm , something smells tasty. It’s coming from that stand over there! They get up to follow the smell. BACK ON: the kid’s table. Gee and Deputy Mouse approach, as do other park visitors. DEPUTY MOUSE (CONT’D) Ooh , cupcakes! Ari flies one up to Gee Raffe, we hear her gulp it down in one bite <SFX: GULP>. She loves it < SFX: Mmm-mmm-mmm > . Silas Cheetah appears in a blur. They give him a cupcake too. He eats it and blurs off. More animals appear, <SFX: Walla>, interested in the cupcakes. OLIVE It’s working! Everyone is finding our stand! ELINOR Just like how the bees found the flowers! ARI Wow, I can’t BEE-lieve it! Get it? Because of the BEES ? Olive and Elinor <SFX: GIGGLE>. The last animal in line takes the last cupcake. ELINOR We ran out of cupcakes! We’re going to have to make more! ARI That’s ok . It just means... (licking his lips and patting his tummy) more cupcake tasting! The kids <SFX: LAUGH> and buzz around like bees as we... END.
