Overall nice revision. The plot and idea mechanics all seem in place now, except for a few spots. Would just encourage you to loosen up the dialogue a bit more on the next pass and have fun with it. PAN DOWN TO: It’s a sunny, mild winter day and a bunch of kids (the winter team as necessary - SALLY, MARY, LIZZIE, ROLLIE, BODIE) are in the field having a blast building with the sticky snow! They’re making all kinds of snow things – snow forts, snow slides, and lots and lots of snow-balls. <DESIGN NOTE: this is the same location as “The Science of Staying Warm”> ELINOR, ARI and OLIVE exit Olive’s house wearing their light jackets, and no hats. in regards to what they are wearing - in 'science of staying warm' we showed how Ari and Elinor didnt need jackets because they have fur and it was a cold winter day - so here i suggest they just have a scarf and only Olive has a light jacket (compared to the big snowsuit she wore in that episode) Elinor What a beautiful day! Ari’s attention is caught by the activity in the nearby field. ANGLE ON: The kids playing in the snow. Ari Whoaaa! Look at all the snow-building! do we want to add a line from Olive in regards to the location veryone likes to play in the snow? on and around the hill outside the front of her house - which is where they all played in 'Science of staying warm' OLIVE Snow forts, snow slides, snow balls... ArI And SNOW-BATS!!! Whooo-hooo!! Ari flops on his backs making one of his famous snow-bats. Elinor And everything’s made out of snow. That’s soo cool! Maybe add "but The sun is warm on my face" to share what the weather is like...although I worry about this sounding kidlike. ARI Brrr . The snow feels COLD when you l ay down in it. Ari hops up. Meanwhile, Olive picks up some snow with her tru nk and forms a little snow-ball. In general, I'm not sure every kid will understand the short hand of calling snow for different uses "___ snow". i.e. suggest instead of "snowball snow," call it "snow for making snowballs", etc. OlIVE Wow! This is really great snowball snow. She tosses the small snowball to Ari who tosses it to Elinor. Elinor Yeah, the slushy snow really sticks together… Elinor demo’s her snow-ball rolling technique. ElINOR (CONT’D) And the snowball picks up even more snow when you roll it around! ARI (in awe) Whoa. That snowball is making itself. Elinor rolls her snowball around and OS. OlIVE Elinor! Ari! Look at this... Olive has filled a plastic bucket with snow, she upends it. Olive ( CONT’D ) A snow-castle! Ari It’s like we’re at the snow-beach ! At that moment Elinor accidentally rolls her snowball right into Ari. ARI ( CONT’D ) Whooooa ! He does a little flip, lands perfectly in his snow bat (if that works for design) , then bounces to his feet. ArI ( CONT’D ) Ta-dah! I meant to do that. Does this feel preschool-like? (feels like something an older child would say) OLIVE (giggling) Smooth move Ari. He does a little bow. ARI Thank you , thank you. ELINOR Sorry Ari, my snowball got away from me. It’s getting so BIG. ANGLE ON: the snowball has rolled a little way off, maybe down a small hill. ARI That IS a big snowball . OLIVE What are you going to do with it, Elinor? Elinor Hmmm, I’m not sure. THOUGHT BUBBLE - shows what Elinor is imagining her snowball, then it’s joined by a second snowball, and a third. They assemble themselves into a classic snowman. ElINOR ( CONT’D ) <GASP!> I have an idea - let’s make a SNOW FRIEND! Ari Not just any Snow Friend. The biggest snow friend EVER!! QUICK SNOW-FRIEND MAKING MONTAGE Elinor, Ari and Olive roll their first snowball around as much as they can, until it’s basically too big to move. They <SX: EFFORTS GRUNT> as they struggle to move it one last time, and collapse around it <SFX: GIGGLING>. CROSSFADE TO: Olive, Ari and Elinor are working on their second snowball. It’s about 1/2 the size of the first one, but still big. They roll it to the bigger ball and roll it up the side and set it in place on top. NOTE: we don’t see the full thing yet. END MONTAGE. Olive Elinor and Ari are admiring their work, eyes wide. <SFX: WHOOOA WALLA> ANGLE ON: Their creation, two snowballs stacked one on top of the other, quite a bit bigger than they are. The last sentence "That's why it snowed", is that true? Does it always snow when it gets colder? Consider deleting it. Ari’s Mom I know it was my suggestion to add this in but I am not sure its needed to say "That's why it snowed" at the end of this statement. I was worried in the first draft it looked like it snowed because they wished it...but not it doesn't seem like that. We were curious to get Sara's thoughts on this and line 81. We worry that saying “….that’s why it snowed” is implying that cold=snow and that’s it which of course isn’t accurate. Maybe the cold helps it snow? Or perhaps Sara is suggesting omitting altogether? A snow giant . Sounds impressive. Well, you’d better wear your hat. It’s quite a bit colder out there today than it was yesterday - that’s why it snowed . Ari flutters OS. (let's establish the kids know it's new, and let's not establish they know the snow is different) OliVE winter gear - here they can be wearing the same as they wore for 'science of staying warm' episode Hey guys! (to clarify) ArI We can make our snow giant THREE heads. to make it clearer - suggest 'we can make our snow giant with THREE heads!’ ELINOR (giggle) We only need one head for now , Ari. OLIVE I’ll start the snowball . Olive picks up some snow in her trunk, but immediately runs into problems. The snow just falls apart and flutters to the ground. OLIVE (CONT’D) Oh! This NEW snow won’t stick together - it just falls apart. Do we want the key question to come from Elinor? (Up to you; we are ok if you'd rather put the focus on Ari.) ARI What’s going on – why is the snow so different from yesterday? ELINOR Hmmm. I’m not sure. She picks up a mitt-full of snow. ECU: Of the powdery pile of snow in Elinor’s mitt. ELINOR (CONT’D) It LOOKS pretty much the same. OlIVE Ye ah , but try to make a ball. Elinor squeezes the snow in her mitten, then opens her hands. The powdery snow just falls to the ground. can we adjust - i dont want it to come across like Ari is suggesting that as a boy, he has more strength. perhaps 'Hmmm. (he picks up snow) maybe we just need to try and squeeze it harder <efforts>' ArI Great suggestion from Kevin. I do like this brainstorm. I have seen kids try this method again and again. Agree with Kevin and Sara Hmmm . Let me try. Maybe you just have to squeeze harder. Ari grabs a handful of snow in his mitts and starts squeezing it with all his might. ArI ( CONT’D ) RRRRRRRR . I guess this isn’t snow castle snow either. olive can then ask Ari for the bucket since he has it - add 'may I Ari?' OLIVE Hmmm . Maybe if I pack the snow down a little more... Olive fills her bucket, but just at that moment Olive’s Mom calls from the front door. OlIVE’S MOM Hey kids, who’s ready for some hot chocolate? ArI <GASP> Hot chocolate! ELINOR We are! OlIVE Coming Mom!! The kids run to the house <NOTE: Olive keeps her bucket> 5 . INT. OLIVE’S HOUSE (ENTRANCE) – DAY Olive, Ari and Elinor enter. <NOTE: Olive bucket is filled past the brim with fluffy snow>. 67-71 feels a bit odd that Olive didnt realize she has the bucket- perhaps it'll work better if the realization happens quicker. and Elinor's line can be a bit more natural 'uhh, Olive, you brought the bucket with you' (pointing to it) OlIVE Agree w/Kevin Whew, it’s nice to be inside where it’s warm. Change to "Yeah, it's a lot colder out there today." ARI Yeah, I was getting a little cold out there. ElINOR Olive, look! You still have the bucket of snow. Bit torn whether it makes sense for Olive to accidentally still carry the bucket. Maybe change "Whoops, I forgot I had it" to something like "Yeah, I brought it in so we can keep observing the snow." so it's more intentional? Up to you. OlIVE (laughing) Whoops, I forgot I had it. (to the bucket) Hi little bucket of snow, would you like to see my house? ArI I wonder if buckets of snow like hot chocolate? 6. INT. Olive’s LIving Room - day Olive’s Mom has bundled the kids in blankets on the couch, and they each hold a mug of hot chocolate. The bucket of snow is nestled between Ari and Olive. i dont think Olive's mom would allow them to have a bucket of snow on the couch - we can have the blankets that are wrapped around them covering it from her view. Elinor Oooh, this is cozy. OlIVE Thanks, Mom! OLIVE’S mOM You’re welcome kids. It IS really cold out there. Olive’s Mom puts a log on the fire and closes the door to the wood stove. Then she goes off. "This sequence coming up is a bit tricky. Right now, it feels like they are already well aware that today is colder, but I think we want to keep that connection slightly in the back for now. In essence, we want to merge these two data points: ""It's colder today than yesterday"" and ""Warmer snow is slushier"" into one ""aha!"" moment, but we want to do it naturally, and observation-based. Their entry point into all of this is the bucket observation. Try this general outline for this sequence: - The kids observe that the snow in the bucket turned slushier, and more like the good snow from yesterday. - They piece together that the snow in the bucket melted because it warmed up. - They realize the new snow out there doesn't work because it's too cold. - That makes sense because today is colder than yesterday! - Recap: Yesterday was warmer, so the snow was slushier and stickier. - But today is too cold. - Hmmm... Consider moving the catchphrase here, either before or after the current sentence: "That's so interesting!" Elinor after 88 - based on the layout of their home - Olives mom would be in the hallway walking with laundry and wouldnt be able to see the bucket between them from that angle. suggest she comes in to ask how the hot chocolte tastes - or if the fire is making them toasty and warm. then she spots the bucket 'Oh OLlive, be careful...' It feels different too - it’s wet and slushy . Olive’s Mom walks by with a basket of laundry. Let's not have the mom come in yet. OLIVE ( CONT’D ) Maybe- "Our snow Gaint might melt (into water, which definitly wont help)" . -I like 'might' better than 'would' because they are learning about these concepts not yet experts and the word melt is a content vocab that might need a little support. Yes! Perfect snowball snow. "At this point, it might be helpful to bring the Mom in. She comes in, and the kids explain to her that their bucket of snow turned slushier and stickier. The mom confirms that the snow melts and gets slushy when it gets warmer, and that makes it easier to make into things like snowballs. When the snow is too cold, it stays fluffy, which makes it hard to stick together. At this, the kids piece together the other piece of information. Something like, ELINOR That's it! That's why the snow is different today from yesterday. It's a lot colder today! (I think by now we've laid that groundwork so it doesn't feel out of left field) OLIVE Yes! Yesterday was warmer, so the snow was slushier and stickier! ELINOR But today it's colder, so the snow stays fluffly and crumbly! ARI We figured out the snow mystery! (Celebratory moment) " ELINOR (realizing) Wait a minute...t hat’s IT! If we’re gonna finish our Snow Giant, we need to warm up the snow. "Change to something like: ""That explains why the snow out there is different, but... how are we going to finish our snow giant?"" Add some more lines, something like: OLIVE Yeah, the snow out there is too cold. It's not going to stick together. ELINOR Hmmm.... Then the kids brainstorm, continue with current line 96." ARI So what do we do? Build our Snow Giant in the house? THOUGHT BUBBLE shows the S n ow Giant in the house . The kids are putting the head in place, it barely fits - bumping the ceiling. OLIVE Maybe, but it’s pretty big. ElINOR Besides, it’s really warm in here compared to outside. Our Snow Giant would melt completely . THOUGHT BUBBLE: Shows the Snow Giant melting, then the bubble POPS! If the mom is still in the scene, she would DEFINITELY veto this idea, perhaps to comic effect. ArI That’s no good. ELINOR We have to warm up the snow just a little bit. Hmmmmm . <GASP> I’ve got it!! (inaudible whispering to Ari and Olive) Olive and Ari break into big smiles. 101/102: Can Olive/Ari first say what they are going to do so it’s clear to the audience? If we rely on the information to come from the song, the viewers might miss it. OlIVE That’ll work. ArI Let’s do it. BUCKET BRIGADE MONTAGE: A quick montage of Elinor, Ari and Olive forming a bucket brigade of play pails to warm up the snow. Elinor and Ari are outside, while Olive remains at the door. Ari scoops up snow in a bucket, hands it to Elinor who runs to Olive, Olive takes the snow inside and puts it near (but not too near) the fire. "Like Kevin's suggestion. Also, some tweaks to the song: In chorus, consider using ""Fluffy"" instead of ""powder"" and ""slushy"" instead of ""slush"" The second group of verse seems to be missing a verse. Are you intending this to have the same number of lines as the first group of verses? Consider something like, Our Snow Friend isn't finished We have to make his head! So if we can't use cold snow, We'll warm it up instead! When the snow gets wet and sticky We'll put it on our Friend We'll make a good snowball And use it for his head! " ELINOR/ARi/olive (singing) Elinor: Yesterday was warm, the action during the song - first its describedd as a bucket brigade - one handing it to the other and so on - yet then it changes to Olive running to the door, opening it, her and Ari switch buckets and Olive runs back inside - where’s Elinor. Suggest Olive is carrying the ‘melted’ snow-bucket to Elinor and Ari who are at the door. Olive hands Elinor’s the ‘melted’ snow-bucket, freeing her hands and then Ari hands Olive the new cold snow buckets. And the snow could really stick Olive: Today it is colder and It doesn’t stick a bit. Ari: We’ll bring the snow inside, Where it’s nice and toasty, then - Elinor: We’ll wait for it to melt a bit, then take it out again ANGLE ON: The snow melting in the buckets. WIDEN TO REVEAL: Olive is watching, she grabs the two buckets and runs to the door and opens it. Ari’s there with two MORE buckets of snow, they exchange buckets, and Olive closes the door and runs back to the fire. ALL: Warm up the snow! Warm up the snow! Make the snow sticky And we’re good to go! Song: Can we say “powdery” instead of “powder” and “slushy” vs. “slush” – descriptors vs. nouns? When snow is cold it’s powder, When it’s warm it’s slush, We can build anything When we warm up the snow. OUTSIDE: Ari and Elinor are standing beside a good-sized pile of melty snow (maybe its a little bluer). Olive runs out in full winter gear, she scoops up a snowball - it works! Elinor takes it, puts it down and starts rolling, as the snowball gets bigger Ari and Olive join in. Elinor: Our Snow Friend isn’t finished We have to make his head! Olive: So if we can’t use cold, cold snow, We’ll warm it up instead. Ari: When snow gets wet and sticky We can make a good snowball, Elinor: Then put it on our Snow Friend Ari flutters up with the head and balances it in place. Wow, he’s really tall! ALL: Warm up the snow! Warm up the snow! Make the snow sticky And we’re good to go! When snow is cold it’s powder, When it’s warm it’s slush, We can build anything When we warm up the snow END MONTAGE: 7. EXT. OlIVE'S FRONT YARD – DAY The kids are admiring their creation (Note: He doesn’t have a face yet). ari flaps his arms to fly so he wont be able to carry the head as he's flying - suggest elinor lifts it up to Olive who uses her tun to lift it higher to Ari whos standing on the second ball supporting the head in place Elinor/ari/OLIVE Woooooow! Let's add a line or two in this end sequence to recap what they learned, and also drive home some overarching lesson (perhaps about making observations or trying things out). ElinoR Now that’s what I call a GIANT snow giant. ArI He’s so big he could crush cars and houses and mountains!! (he starts stomping around) BOOOM! BOOM!!! BOOM!! BOOM! Elinor and Olive look at each other and smile. ELINOR Uh, Ari, our Snow Giant would never do that. ARI Why not? OlIVE He’s friendly! She stretches up her trunk and draws eyes and a big smile.
