"Lines 1-10: Feel like this first scene could do a better job of setting up the question that Elinor later asks her mom (""Why is Chicky still here?"") and the idea of birds migrating. It feels a little out of the blue for Elinor to ask this question. For example, why does Elinor wonder why Chicky is still around, but in this first scene she expects her to come back soon? Can you try re-ordering things in this way: - Open on Elinor hopping around her backyard. - She notices the first few snowflakes start falling. ""It's starting to snow!"" - Then she notices the geese. ""Good bye geese! See you next spring!"" (This makes the connection clear for kids: birds fly away when it starts to snow) - Then she hears Chicky. ""I know who that is - Chicky! OLIVE Mmmm , I don’t think birds have phones. This joke supposes that we think the birds are kids or baby birds, which doesn't seem like an assumption the audience will make. We don't think the joke is going to play. Can we cut the mention of the parents' phones? ARI Right, good point. Maybe they use their parents phone? OLIVE (giggles) I know. Maybe they put their food in lunch boxes, like we do. ArI Maybe. But how would they carry them? They don’t have hands. OLIVE You're right. Maybe they have backpacks. ElINOR Look! KITCHEN - DAY Back at home, the excited kids tell Ranger Rabbit what they’ve observed. ELINOR We saw birds looking for food in all kinds of cool places, Mom. Then there's a door up top with a tiny book? what if instead she has placed a tiny book ontop of the carton, with some drawings of the food they saw them eating. She can say its a birdfeeder library. OLIVE This isn’t just a house, look... She opens the top door and takes out a tiny book. ArI It’s a library! N ice! This line might confuse kids. Change to: "That way birds have something to read while they have a snack." Delete the second sentence, then start the description below with "The kids giggle." OLIVE That way birds can read a little, then perch down here and have a snack. What did you make Ari? Ari holds up two paper plates held together with string. "Simplify this sentence: ""I made this! It's a flying saucer bird feeder I made from two paper plates. The top plate is the roof, and the bottom plate is for the seeds."" Feel like we don't need to point out so much where the birds ""perch"". It's an advanced word, and kids will see anyway later that the birds need a place to stand to get the seeds in the later scenes." ArI will our audience understand 'perch'? perch is definitely a new term. Either say a "place to stand" or somewhere earlier in the script have Ranger Rabbit intro the term. This! It’s a flying saucer bird feeder I made from two paper plates and some string. The top plate is the roof and you put the seeds on the bottom plate where the birds can perch . ( He flies it around making flying saucer noises) Boop-beep-boop. (alien voice) Take us to your birdseed. OLIVE (laughing) Let’s see your birdfeeder, Elinor! Elinor decorated a paper towel roll to look like a tree trunk with a little hole in the side (near the bottom, which is blocked) and a small perch. OlIVE (CONT’D) It looks just like Chicky’s tree! Delete the last sentence in this line. "And she can sit..." ELINOR Yep. I made it out of a paper-towel roll. You just pour the food in the top and it comes out this hole on the side. And she can sit on this little stick and eat. This line is a bit awkward. Change to: "Cool! There's so many ways to make a birdfeeder." good ArI again, will our audience understand 'perch'? Cool! There’s a lot of different ways to make a birdfeeder - but they each have places for the birds to perch and munch. Olive Typo in "youR sunflower seeds..." ELINOR Thanks, Mom. What else do birds like to eat, Olive? Olive checks her notes. OlIVE Uhhh, apples. RANGER RABBIT I have apples right here. I’ll cut some slices. OLIVE And bugs! ELINOR’S HOUSE - DAY Ari is fluttering up near a bare winter tree, hanging the last birdfeeder. visually - we should have Ari standing on a branch (he had already flown up) as he hangs the last feeder. Otherwise for him to fly (wings are attached to his hands/arms) he'd be shaking the feeder up and down very quickly which would make it impossible to hang. Plus the seeds would technically be flying everywhere ArI There we are! OLIVE Perfect! Nice work Ari. ElINOR Yep, now all we need is... Chicky flies OS giving her friendly <SFX: Fee-Bee Call > ElINOR (CONT’D) LOOK! It’s Chicky!! Hello Chicky! (imitating Chicky) Fee-Bee, Fee-Bee!
