This is going to be a fun story and a great introduction to comparing and contrasting as a crosscutting concept. Agree that there is a lot going on here and definitely like some of the suggestions that have been made to simplify and make it easier to understand. Getting the note taking right is key - like Sara's suggestion to just record Ari's parts/features and use that to remember what to compare to the other animals. Jorge and Daniel's note addresses this well too. Also agree that including the term "features" might be a bit too much - using "parts" as Sara suggests might be a way to go or the other suggestions that are made throughout as alternatives. CLOSE UP ON GROUND: The last few drops of RAIN from a clearing shower land in a PUDDLE on the path. Nearby, a WORM emerges from the GRASS and moves towards it. I really like the introduction of the word compare. I think 'features' is ok too. Sometimes we call these features 'parts'. This encourages the systems thinking...each feature is a part to the whole. And your ears are much smaller. Mrs. Gorilla bends over and puts her head next to Ari’s. She wiggles her SMALL EARS. Ari It’s true, my ears are big. Watch this! Ari proudly wiggles his LARGER EARS. OLIVE Wow! I never knew you could do that Ari! Ari (shrugging it off) It just takes practice. ElINOR (thinking) Ari, if your cousin looks like you, then she’ll have big ears too. Ari compares his fur color to Mary’s, and checks Lizzie for wings. ELINOR - You three have the same short nose, But that’s as far as the sameness goes! Ari perches on a MAILBOX next to a BIRD. ARI We both have wings, that’s plain to see, But you don’t look at all like me! The kids scan the street, searching for more animals, but they’ve compared Ari to everyone. ALL Compare and see, compare and see! ARI (slumping) There’s no one here that looks just like me! SONG ENDS. The kids have looked everywhere and haven’t found Ari’s cousin. He’s upset and slumps on a BENCH. ARI I give up! I’ve compared myself to everyone and no one is the same as me. <SIGH>... I’ll never find my cousin. OLIVE Don’t give up, Ari . As Olive comforts Ari, something catches Elinor’s eye OS. Elinor Wait a minute... Elinor runs off and her friends follow . My mom told me that he looks like me so I compar ed myself to everyone... but no one is the same as me . (then, sadly) <SIGH>... I’ll never find him. ARI <SIGH>. Ya, I was just saying the same thing about my cousin. Olive looks between Ari and his cousin, flabbergasted. Olive But you two must be cousins! You look almost exactly alike! Logline: Ari’s cousin is coming to town and he needs Elinor and Olive’s help to find her. Only one problem… he doesn’t know what she looks like! Curriculum Goals: SEP4 .
