Our googling only revealed a carnivorous beetle: https://www.britannica.com/animal/predaceous-diving-beetle" Beetles that breathe underwater with airbubbles could be visually fun and exciting for viewers. I'm concerned about the vague connection between the leaf being used to help keep the rain off the books and using a bubble to breathe underwater. Especially since the kids won't/ aren't thinking about "air" when they are trying to get out of the rain. I would keep the focus on the idea that many animals need air to breathe....therefor they need air around us. We don't want to imply people can't breathe in the rain. Olive Oh no, I think it’s going to rain Several big rain drops fall around them. The leaves in our designs - forest trees/leaves are very realistic in size - unless we have large tropical trees with enormous leaves - enough to shelter ms.mole and several kids. Would they not be able to just stay under a tree for shelter? Our characters are also designed to have very large heads so they arent able to put their hands up over their heads. The leaves they hold will need to have very long stems and a large leaf to protect them Ari Agree with the suggestion to avoid the umbrella and instead move towards a shelter under the trees. Let's make sure we consider Sara's note about how complicated it is to equate the leaf umbrella/canopy with the bubble – they are two different ideas and for different reasons. The books! They’ll get wet The kids look worried. Mz . Mole looks to a fallen tree then produces several large leaves. She creates a large umbrella with the leaves as the rain falls harder. Mz . Mole and the kids remain perfectly dry. give this line to Ari OLIVE being in a bubble is something different to 5 year olds. Mole I think now is a perfect time for this story. Olive would you please hold this? Mz . Mole hands the makeshift umbrella to Olive who takes it with her trunk. Mz . Mole then pulls out a book. The kids giggle as they squeeze in close under the leaves. She opens the books and we see a scene of a pond with a log 2. Ext. pond -- DAY "1) Can we say ""Need air to breathe"" rather than ""breathe air""? 2) Is it accurate to say that ""all animals on land"" need air to breathe?" Mz . Mole All animals living on land need to breathe air. That’s true for you, me, and this beetle here We see a beetle crawl out on the log and twiddle his antennae as a breeze passes over him. But this little beetle loves to explore underwater Mz . Mole (CONT’D) Some beetles love to explore underwater. "Why does the beetle go underwater, Mz Mole? add MM: “That’s where they find food!”" ElinoR I bet there’s tasty food for them down there. We see the beetle crawl to the underside of the log which is in the water. The underwater world opens up and we see lots of different plants (glistening). We see the beetle leap downward towards the plants Consider removing for time. I ElINOR (CONT’D) That plant looks good for him. Before reaching the plant the beetle dashes to the surface OLIVE Why did he come back up? He needs to breathe, just like we do. MZ . MOLE Maybe use the word “catch” instead of “capture” – also not sure if kids will know what “surface” means. Maybe could just say they “catch a bubble from on top of the water” Well just like us, there’s no air for him to breathe under the water. ElINOR But how will he get those tasty plants? "Some special beetles have figured out a way to bring a bubble or air with them! Here, add some description of the bubble and/or a visual reference. This is the section where more would be very welcome, perhaps some details about how they gather it or hold/store it. This is more important than the intro/outtro." MZ . MOLE Well some special beetles are able to capture a bubble of air from the surface and take it with them. The beetle moves his legs and then dives back under the water. This time he has a bubble of air under him. <SFX: KIDS WHOA> Can he breathe the air in the bubble? ARI We like J&D's suggestion for this line Can he breathe from the bubble? MZ . MOLE Why yes he can! That’s so interesting! So he can stay underwater longer? And get to those tasty plants? ElINOR Neat! Does that mean he can stay underwater longer? Can he get to those plants? we will need to simplify - pop-up book style - keeping to only a few poses of the beetle from different angles as well as the animation as it 'zips between plants' MZ . MOLE Feels like a stretch the say the beetles are having fun inside the bubble. Yes! These beetles can stay underwater a very long time, exploring for food and having fun. The beetle cruises around underwater, zipping among the plants, even doing flips in the water as he speeds between them. Not sure if kids will understand “scuba” reference. Check with Sara. OLIVE I worry about this. This would need to be supported with images of scuba divers and it might be better coming from Mz Mole....something like the air bubbles act like helmets that scuba divers wear to breathe underwater. Agree with Sara – we're not sure what background knowledge the kids will have about scuba diving to understand this. We might need more to support it. Or we could lose it entirely. They’re like small scuba divers! Kids laugh as more beetles zip about in the pond. 3. EXT. Trail -- DAY Mz . Mole closes the book. It’s still raining. It’s pretty useful to take an air bubble with you. MZ . MOLE Not sure kids will get the idea of “take your environment with you” since we haven’t defined “environment," plus this is a high-concept idea It’s a pretty neat trick to be able to take your environment with you. "ELINOR: Ooh, I have an idea! Elinor finds a big leaf and sticks it between her ears. " ELINOR Ooh, I have an idea! Olive, may I please have a leaf? Olive hands Elinor a large leaf. Elinor steps out from the group with her own leaf and we see the rain falling all around her while she stays dry. "ELINOR: I’m going to use an air bubble to return my book! End after WALLA (other kids can’t really follow her trick)" ELINOR (CONT’D) J&D suggested use of the leaf here and equated it to the bubble but it really isn’t the same thing. Sara noted that we don’t want kids to think that we can’t breathe in the rain which is what this implies. I’m going to take my environment with me and return my book Elinor turns and heads up to the little library with her book in hand. <SFX: KIDS ME TOO WALLA> The kids each take a leaf from Olive and head up the trail toward the little library, each in their own dry “bubble”. We see Elinor put her book in the library.
