Wonderful episode! 1. EXT Trail -- DAY I think the focus on sun as a warming benefit is good and makes the learning much clearer. We agree that the key takeaway is much clearer in this draft. We had some line suggestions, but overall looking good! Open on a beautiful scene on a cool morning in early spring . T he sun is out, but it’s not sweltering. The setting is thin and open. We see RANGER RABBIT (wearing a BACKPACK) , ELINOR, ARI and OLIVE (carrying her SATCHEL) in the middle distance, walking towards us. They disappear around a hill and then come around a corner into view, full size. First to appear is Ranger Rabbit, also wearing a SUN HAT. RANGER RABBIT What a WONDERFUL day for a walk! Elinor and Olive appear, also wearing SUN HATS. Olive has her NOTEPAD out. elinOR Yeah, mom, I love sunny days ! There are so many interesting things to see and smell and find ! Elinor follows around a butterfly. In regards to Olive drawing here - She's pointing out that Elinor notices interesting things every day (but as she's drawing she too is noticing things to be drawing it) OLIVE (drawing a flower) Elinor, you notice interesting things on any kind of day ! Maybe add word observe. I like to observe on all kinds of days. ELINOR (stops to think) Agree with Sara here. It will follow better from the previous lines if she says something about observing or noticing on all those days. It’s true, Olive. I like rainy days, and windy days and cloudy days... (pause) I like all kinds of days! Elinor and Olive <GIGGLE>. Just then, Ari comes around the bend last, his pace dragging a bit in comparison to the others. He looks a little winded (but not hot) . ARI Phew. Wait up, guys! How do you walk so fast? We had a training today about accessibility and reaching diverse learners which is leading to this suggestion. If you can’t see Ari (if you are visually impaired or have trouble attending to details), you won’t really understand why Ranger Rabbit is saying this. Could be helpful to add, “Oh Ari! You look a little hot and tired. I think it might be a good time for a little break.” Or something to that effect so that we don't rely so heavily on the visuals. RANGER RABBIT ( empathetically ) Oh, Ari. I think it might be a good time for a little break. The group pauses to wait for Ari. ARI Good! I’m a bit thirsty ! Ari stops right in the shade of a small tree while everyone else is in the sun . Ranger Rabbit hands him a water bottle and he takes a long drink while Ranger Rabbit gives Olive some fruit slices. Ari (CONT’D) Ahhhh ... that’s better. Ranger Rabbit walks ahead a little, and Olive shares the fruit with the other kids. As they munch , a little breeze blows through, and Ari starts to shiver slightly. We hear J&D's notes on this. Is it possible to drop the "Brr" but keep the rest? Maybe he says, "Ooh!" instead. ARI (CONT’D) Brr . I feel a little bit chilly here! ELINOR Really? I’m not cold. OLIVE Me either! It’s nice and toasty in the sun. Ari looks up at the tree and at the ground, and then steps out from under the shade. ARI Wow, the sun can really warm you up! "could have Olive step into the shady spot so Its visually clear. Perhaps we have her step from shade to sun - swaying back and forth - 'And the shade cools you down. (sways to the sun)Warm, sways to the shade(cool)' " OLIVE (pointing at the shady spot Ari was in) Might need a bit more here. “And look! Ari’s in the shade. The shade cools you down.” Like Kevin's visual suggestion as well. And the shade cools you down. ELINOR OK, l et’s keep going! The group starts to move. This could use a better transition. “Now that I’m in the sun, I’m nice and warm, but I wish I’d brought a hat.” Also we hear J&D's note, but it seems confusing to not acknowledge why he needs a hat. Maybe we should just drop the lines about the hat since it isn't really necessary to move the story along and we don't address it's purpose. ARI The sun is nice and warm, but now I wish I had brought a hat , like my parents suggested ! RANGER RABBIT Your parents gave me one for you, Ari. She pulls a folded hat out of her backpack and he gladly puts it on. ARI Thanks, Mrs. Rabbit! Parents are the BEST. Elinor and Olive <GIGGLE> and Ranger Rabbit smiles. They start walking again. Mrs. BEAVER (indistinct OS) Oh no. No, no, no... that wasn’t the plan... ELINOR What’s that about, mom? RANGER RABBIT I don’t know , Elinor, let’s go find out. 2. EXT CLEARING -- DAY Mrs. Beaver and her helpers, Mr. Buffalo and Mrs. Hippo, are gathered around a folding table with a set of blueprint plans on it. Ranger Rabbit and the kids enter the clearing. Mrs. Beaver Nope. Nope! That just won’t do. Ranger Rabbit and the kids approach the table. RANGER RABBIT Hello , Mrs. Beaver. Is something wrong? Mrs. Beaver throws her arms in the air in frustration. MRS. BEAVER Is something wrong? Oh, only EVERYTHING! We can’t do ANYTHING today. We are supposed to build a new park bench right over there! Mrs. Beaver holds up a blueprint sketch of the bench and points to a rock sitting in a sunny spot in the middle of the clearing. Elinor That’s a great spot for a bench! OLIVE Yeah, it would have such a nice view of the river. RANGER RABBIT Oh, I see. Th at rock i s in the way. ElINOR Do you need help moving it? ARI I’m super strong, I can help! MRS. BEAVER Thanks Ari, but MOVING the rock is not the problem. The problem is that there are two LIZARDS sitting on the rock and they just won’t budge! RanGER RABBIT Hmmmmm . MRS. BEAVER And of course, park rules say we can’t build something if there are animal s there. We’ve tried everything to get them to leave so we can move the rock and build our bench, but nothing works! The kids fire some suggestions at Mrs. Beaver from both sides. As she answers, she turns her head back and forth. ELINOR Did you try shoo-ing them away? MRS. BEAVER Yes. Maybe clearer to say, “Did you try calling them to come over here?” OLIVE Did you try calling them from here ? MRS. BEAVER Tried it. elinor Did you wave your arms ? MRS. BEAVER Yup . love how silly and whimsical we are making Ari's character ari Did you try singing a song and doing a silly dance? Like THIS! La, la, LAAA ! Ari does a silly soft shoe. Everyone looks at Ari. A beat. Ari (CONT’D) Hey, it could work! The kids and Ranger Rabbit smile. OLIVE Do the lizards EVER move? MRS. BEAVER Yes, they do leave at the end of the day, but by then it’s too dark for us to work! ELINOR What about in the morning? MRS. BEAVER Every morning they come back and climb on top of the rock again! ranger rabbit Mrs. Beaver, have you thought about building the bench in a different spot? MRS. BEAVER A different spot? Oh no! The plans say we have to build it there! RANGER RABBIT Hmmm ... suggest adding "If we don’t figure out something soon, we just won’t be able to build the bench!" MRS. BEAVER If we don’t figure out something soon, we won’t be able to build the bench ! RANGER RABBIT Can I take a look at the plans, Mrs. Beaver? While Ranger Rabbit and Mrs. Beaver huddle over the plans, t he kids move to the side to discuss. ELINOR Hmmm , that is SO INTERESTING! I wonder why the lizards like that rock so much? 50 and 51 - I think 51 should come from Olive as well - currently it reads like she's just pointing out another rock and its Ari who then make s a point as to why that rock is any different. Then Olive even recognizes that Ari had a good question in line 52. Yet I assume that was why Olive pointed the other rock out in the first place. maybe we then give 52 to Ari or Elinor OLIVE There’s another rock right over there. Olive points to another rock in the clearing, a few paces from the lizard rock. This rock is sitting in the shade between two small trees. ARI I wonder why the lizards like this rock, and not that other one? olive Good question, Ari. If we knew what they liked about that rock, maybe we could figure out how to get them to move to another rock ! "after line 53 - I'm a bit confused - Why do they run to the shaded rock and sit behind it to observe the lizards who are on the sunny rock? i see that you need them to be in the shade for line 74 to work. I suggest to make it more natural, when they are talking about the shaded rock during lines 51 and 52. So they can then take a seat on the rock and stand around it while they observe the lizrds. Olive also has her notepad out but she doesnt use it and then is asked to take her Nature book out. Suggest she doesnt have her notepad out during this time " ELINOR Agree with removing Olive's notepad since she doesn't really use it. Hmmm . It sounds like we need MORE OBSERVATIONS! The kids run over to the other (shaded) rock and sit down behind it to look at the lizards. Olive has her notepad out. ELINOR (CONT’D) Ok . Why do the lizards like to sit o n that rock so much? OLIVE Maybe they like the view of the river ? ARI But they’re looking the wrong direction! ELINOR Maybe they’re playing a super long game of freeze tag? OLIVE Hmmm , but they DO move . They leave at the end of the day and come back in the morning . And I’ve never heard of lizards playing tag. Ari I wonder what lizards DO like to do? ELINOR I know! Let’s learn more about lizards. Olive, do you have your Nature Book? OLIVE Of course! It’s my favorite book! She pulls her NATURE BOOK out of her satchel and cracks it open so they can all get a good view. OLIVE (CONT’D) Let’s see... Ladybugs... Leaves... Lilypads ... Ah, here it is. Lizards! Ari and Elinor lean in. OLIVE (CONT’D) (reading) Lizards are animals with scaly skin. Olive points out the scales on the lizards in her book. OLIVE (CONT’D) They mostly eat bugs... how about a comedy line from Ari throughout - ‘oh, crunchy’ ELINOR/ari Whoa ! / Ew ! OLIVE And they also eat worms. again, ari for comedy 'ew, slurpy' elinor / ari Ooohh ! / Yikes ! OLIVE But they also like fruit! if we go with the comedy lines from Ari the i suggest he's the one to say 'i like fruit' so Elinor is more reactionary while Ari expresses in a bit more detail throughout this seq. ARI / ELINOR Ok ! / I like fruit! OLIVE They lay eggs, like birds do... ELINOR/ari Huh !/That’s cool! OLIVE And they need the sun to warm themselves up. This makes Elinor think. Elinor Hmmmm ... Just then, another little breeze blows through in the shade, and Ari feels a little bit of a shiver. Ari Speaking of the sun, I’m feeling a little chilly here in the shade. I’m gonna move over here where it’s sunny. ANGLE ON: Ari moves out of the shade into a sunny spot. ARI (CONT’D) Ahh , that’s better. Elinor looks closely at Ari. ElINOR Oooooh . (suddenly she realizes) That’s it! It’s the sun! The lizards must like that rock over there because it’s in the sun, so it’s warmer! ANGLE ON: the lizard rock in bright sunlight. OliVE You’re right! They look nice and toasty over there. We can probably remove “like” from this line because it really is their spot to get warm. ARI T he rock is like their spot to get warm ! ELINOR Hmmm . But why do they leave the rock at the end of the day? OLIVE I know! It’s because there’s no sun at the end of the day . That’s why they leave! ELINOR That’s it!! Let’s go tell Mrs. Beaver and my mom! The kids rush back over to where the adults are . I'm not sure if "We figured it out" is becoming a tag line. A line like "We discovered something" helps to promote the process. ELINOR (CONT’D) Agree with Sara's note. We'd like to stay in the spirit of science inquiry and discovery. We like Sara's suggestion to say "We discovered..." Mom! We figured it out! Ranger Rabbit and Mrs. Beaver turn to the kids. ELINOR (CONT’D) The lizards like to sit on that rock because it’s in the sun. OLIVE Lizards use the sun to warm themselves up. ARI And that other rock is too shady and cool for them. This could be a place that ranger rabbit introduces them to the new concept at a higher level " Oh right they are not warm-blooded like us who can stay warm by putting on more clothes. They are cold-blooded and their bodies don't make any heat. They need to get it from the sun" or something like that. RANGER RABBIT I think you’re right, kids. Lizards can’t get warm by themselves, so they like to sit in places that get a lot of sun. MRS. BEAVER Huh! Well, I’m glad we figured that out, but how do we get them to move!? ELINOR Well... now that we know WHY they like that rock, maybe we can figure out how to make them move to ANOTHER rock. OLIVE Yeah, we need to get the sun OFF of their rock and ON to another rock. Ha! ARI (squinting up at the sky, then pointing to the rocks) We'd prefer not to have Ari looking up at the sun since it's dangerous to do so. Ok , all we have to do is move the sun from there to... over there! Mr. Buffalo, can you move the sun? Mr. Buffalo looks confused and shrugs. OLIVE Ari, we can’t move the sun! MRS. BEAVER (thinking) No, but we can move that other rock into a sunny spot. are worms as animals having their habitat moved? for the sake of learning do we squint at this? ELINOR Great idea! The adults and the kids move over to the rock where the kids were before. Everyone stands back as Mr. Buffalo and Mrs. Hippo roll the rock a few feet over into the sun. Under the rock we see some worms wriggling. OLIVE Perfect! That’s just the way the lizards like it. Nice and sunny! ARI We can make it even nicer for the lizards. Let’s get them some snacks! The kids collect stuff to make the rock a perfect spot for the lizards. They pick the worms from under the rock and find fruit slices from Ranger Rabbit’s backpack . As they work, they sing a ditty explaining what they’re doing and enticing the lizards to come over: We are wondering if it might confusing to include the lines about worms and bugs to eat in the song since it doesn’t have to do with the core learning goal or the core tenet of the song (In the sun). ELinor/Ari/Olive We want to find the perfect spot, For lizards to feel nice and hot! In the sun! In the sun! You can feel warm and have more fun! Worms look really gross to eat But lizards think they’re quite a treat! In the sun! In the sun! You can feel warm and have more fun! At the end of the ditty, the rock has worms and fruit slices on it. The kids and the adults step back and look to where the lizards are still hanging out, unmoved. ELINOR Hmmm . The lizards haven’t moved . Mrs. Beaver Oh, it didn’t work! We won’t be able to build the park bench ! RanGER RABBIT Hmmm ... OlIVE But we made them the perfect spot! ARI Maybe they haven’t notice d yet? ELINOR Hey, Lizards, look at this warm rock over here! OLIVE It’s in the sun! ARI Check it out! It’s got worms and fruit and it’s nice and warm ! ELINOR C’mon , give it a try! The lizards ignore them. OLIVE They’re NOT moving. ElINoR I guess they like their rock. Ari stretches his wings out in frustration. ARI But our rock is sunny and warm , too! His open wings make a big patch of shade right in front of Elinor. ELINOR Wait a minute. That’s it! Your shadow! We need shade! Good thinking , Ari! Ari looks a bit surprised, then pleased with himself. ARI Yeah! Umm ... What? Elinor whispers in Ari’s ear. This line is a bit awkward. Wonder if Is it clearer to say, “I can cool down the rock by making it shady.” Or “I can make shade on the rock to cool it down.” Ari (CONT’D) Oh, I get it! I can make shade to cool down the rock! Leave it to me! Ari flaps his wings and takes off. He flies over to the lizards’ rock and hovers above them, using his wings to make shade. He’s starting to get tired , and the lizards shift a bit but don’t move. Wonder if she should add, “It must not be cool enough yet.” To keep driving home the core goal. OLIVE They still aren’t moving! ARI I can’t fly forever! Maybe use words like "Don't give up Ari" . you can do it ELINoR Like Sara's wording suggestion here. Just a bit longer, Ari! Just as he looks ready to give up, the lizards start to move. They slither off Mrs. Beaver’s rock and go over to the rock the kids prepared, where they munch happily on the snacks. Maybe someone can say, “They moved!” to make it clear what worked. (for kids who might not be able to see/attend to the visuals as well) OLive/ARI/ELINOR Yay! / Whew! / We did it! RangER RABBIT Good job, kids! Can either ranger rabbit or Mrs beaver recognize that they can build the bench AND make sure that the lizards have a nice home where they can get everything they need" MRS. BEAVER Thank you so much , kids ! Now we can build the bench and finish the project! Mrs. Beaver and her helpers go off to start building the bench. Could add “on their new rock" to be more explicit. ELINOR And the lizards get to enjoy the warm sun. OLIVE And a nice snack! Ari flies back and collapses on the ground. ELINOR Good job, Ari! ARI (using his hat to fan himself) Phew! Now I’m a bit hungry too! OLIVE Well, the lizards ate the fruit... but there are still some worms left! ARI Ok , I’m not THAT hungry. They all giggle.
