A lot of compost bins don't look like garbage cans. Nice and kids will find it super interesting - and um...We see worm casings coming out of the back of the worms. Kids will definitely enjoy this :) MZ . MOLE Ari, bring that apple core over here. I have a special garbage can for leftover fruits and veggies! Scene 1 - We had the same quesiton as Sara. Kids deifnitely have ideas about what a garbage can is and what it's for. We want to think of this differently. She could possibly call it a "container" or "special place" as Sara suggests. In the 3rd line they could say, "These leftovers will be something else's lunch." (since we are talking about worms we might not want to say "someone") Mz . Mole shows him a mini garbage can of veggie and fruit scraps and puts Ari’s apple in. Elinor and Olive come over, looking interested. Scene 2 - 1) As long as we keep the use of the word "poop" to a minimum and don't make jokes about it, we are fine with using the term "worm poop". It will definitely help kids understand the process. 2) Do we need to specify that the leftover food is plant-based? We usually don't put animal-based leftovers into compost. Maybe Sara can comment if this distinction is necessary. 3) Also wonder if we could say "old leaves and plants" when talking about what goes into compost. Any plant matter is good for composting so it seems important to include a broader definition than leaves and leftover food. 4) Olive's line, "Eating the old stuff turns it into soil, Mz. Mole? How does that work?" doesn't feel very kid-like. Also might want to make it clear that she's talking about the worms here. 2. INT COMPOST PILE -- DAY We see a pile of red and yellow leaves and fruit and veggie scraps. MZ . MOLE (CONT’D) Nature has a wonderful way to reuse leftover food, and also old leaves. ARI That’s compost! We do that at home. We zoom into the pile, showing leaves and scraps in more detail. As we watch, they get old and dry and brown. MZ . MOLE That’s right! If you pile up leftover fruits and veggies and old leaves, it will turn into new soil after a while. We see a time progression [sunrise/sunsets?] as the pile turns into rich soil. ELINOR That’s so INTERESTING, Mz . Mole! But HOW do leaves and leftovers turn into new soil? As it turns into soil, we see worms are wriggling around inside. MZ . MOLE That’s a great question, Elinor! The leaves and food get dry and crumbly, but there are also some special helpers. Worms! They eat it up! We see the worms diving in and eating with gusto. <SFX: CHOMP, CHOMO> "Is it strange that Ari knows about composting but didn't know why he might put leftover food in a different bin? Well, the worms eat the leaves and leftovers and then when they... Um, when it comes out again, it becomes part of the soil! I'm wondering if we want to call this wormpoop? I feel like kids love the word...it's appropriate for the science content....I'm not sure what parents will think. I like Olive's line ""It's all a big circle"" . Maybe Mz. Mole can add something to turn the word circle into cycle? or bring it make to reuse/ recycle." ARI Yuck! <beat> Wait, do they LIKE it? The worms stop eating for a second. MZ . "Seq 3 - The kids now have apple cores, banana peels etc but where will they get it from? when did they eat it? - do we have them reaching into their bags (but then it's odd they have put finished food in their bag) " 3.
