1. EXT. OLIVE’S FRONT YARD HILL AND FIELD -- DAY START ON: The shining sun. PAN DOWN TO: It’s a mild winter day and a bunch of kids (the winter team as necessary - SALLY, MARY, LIZZIE, ROLLIE, BODIE) are in the field having a blast building with the sticky snow! They’re making all kinds of snow things – snow forts, snow slides, and lots and lots of snow-balls. <DESIGN NOTE: this is the same location as “The Science of Staying Warm”> ELINOR, ARI and OLIVE exit Olive’s house. Olive is wearing her light jacket, Elinor and Ari are just wearing scarves. Elinor (delighted) What a beooo-tiful day! ANGLE ON: The kids playing in the snow. Ari Whoaaa! Look at all the snow-building! OLIVE Snow forts, snow slides, snow balls... ArI And SNOW-BATS! Ari flops on his back making one of his famous snow-bats. ARI ( CONT’D ) Brrr . The snow feels COLD when you lay down in it, although the sun is nice and warm - ahhh . Ari enjoys the sun for a beat, then hops up. Meanwhile, Olive picks up some snow with her trunk and forms a little snow-ball. OlIVE This snow is perfect for making snowballs. She tosses the small snowball to Ari who tosses it to Elinor. Elinor Yeah, it really sticks together… Elinor demo’s her snow-ball rolling technique. ElINOR (CONT’D) Check this out! The snowball picks up more and more snow when you roll it around. ARI (in awe) Whoa. It’s like the snowball is making itself. Elinor rolls her snowball around and OS. OlIVE Elinor! Ari! Look at this... Olive has filled a plastic bucket with snow, she upends it. Olive ( CONT’D ) A snow-castle. Ari We’re at the snow-beach. At that moment Elinor accidentally rolls her snowball right into Ari. ARI ( CONT’D ) Whooooa ! He does a little flip, lands perfectly in his snow bat (if that works for design), then bounces to his feet. ArI ( CONT’D ) Ta-dah! I meant to do that. ELINOR Sorry Ari, my snowball got away from me. It’s getting so BIG. ANGLE ON: the snowball has rolled a little way off, maybe down a small hill. OLIVE What are you going to do with it, Elinor? Elinor Hmmm, I’m not sure. THOUGHT BUBBLE - shows what Elinor is imagining. Her snowball is joined by a second snowball, and a third. They assemble themselves into a classic snowman (with animal ears, of course). ElINOR ( CONT’D ) <GASP!> I have an idea - let’s make a SNOW FRIEND! Ari Not just any Snow Friend. The biggest snow friend EVER!! QUICK SNOW-FRIEND MAKING MONTAGE Ari and Olive help Elinor roll the first snowball she made around as much as they can, until it’s basically too big to move. They <SX: EFFORTS GRUNT> as they struggle to move it one last time, and collapse around it <SFX: GIGGLING>. CROSSFADE TO: Olive, Ari and Elinor are working on their second snowball. It’s about 1/2 the size of the first one, but still big. They roll it to the bigger ball, roll it up the side and set it in place on top. NOTE: we don’t see the full thing yet. END MONTAGE. Olive Elinor and Ari are admiring their work, eyes wide. <SFX: WHOOOA WALLA> ANGLE ON: Their creation, two snowballs stacked one on top of the other, quite a bit bigger than they are. Olive Now that’s a BIG Snow Friend. ArI It’s a snow GIANT!! (movie music) Duh--duh-DUH!!!!! (big voice) Here’s the giant snow giant stomping around the WORLD! (Ari stomps around) Boom-boom-BOOM! OlIVE Uh, Ari... ARI What? ElINOR (giggling) Our Snow Giant can’t stomp anywhere yet. OlIVE (laughing) He doesn’t have a head, so he can’t see where he’s stomping. ARI Oooh , good point. He’d crash into everything! (he mimics CRASH EFFECT) Suddenly Olive’s Mom calls from OS. OliVE’s Mom (O.S.) Oooolive! Time to come in for dinner! OLIVE (calling) OK Mom, be right there!! ELINOR I’d better go home too. ArI Wait, what? We can’t leave! Our snow giant is headless! OLIVE We’ll finish it tomorrow, Ari. ELINOR We promise. 2. INT. ARI’S ROOM – THE NEXT MORNING Ari flies out of bed and to the window. ANGLE ON: outside the world is covered in fresh snow. Ari YES!! LOTS MORE SNOW! Now we can finish our Snow Giant. 3. INT. ARI’s KITCHEN – MORNING Ari is wolfing down his breakfast as his Mom feeds MIRI . Ari’s Mom What’s the rush, Ari? Ari I have to get to Olive’s house, Mom. We’re making a SNOW GIANT! Ari’s Mom A snow giant. Sounds impressive. Well, you’d better wear your hat. It’s quite a bit colder out there today than it was yesterday. Ari flutters OS. Ari Oh. Okay, mom. Bye. 4. EXT. OLIVE’S HOUSE - DAY Elinor, Ari and Olive (all in winter gear ala The Science of Staying Warm) run OS from different directions. OliVE Hey guys! Elinor Whoaaa! Look at all the fluffy NEW snow!!! ArI There’s enough to give our snow giant THREE heads. ELINOR (giggle) We only need one head for now, Ari. OLIVE I’ll start the snowball. Olive picks up some snow in her trunk, but immediately runs into problems. The snow just falls apart and flutters to the ground. OLIVE (CONT’D) Oh! Better try that again. She scoops up more snow - the same thing happens, the snow-ball crumbles and falls to the ground. OLIVE (CONT’D) That’s weird. This NEW snow won’t stick together - it just falls apart. ARI What’s going on – why is the snow so different from yesterday? ELINOR Hmmm. I’m not sure. She picks up a mitt-full of snow. ECU: Of the powdery pile of snow in Elinor’s mitt. ELINOR (CONT’D) It LOOKS pretty much the same. OlIVE Yeah, but try to make a ball. Elinor squeezes the snow in her mitten, then opens her hands. The powdery snow just falls to the ground. ArI Maybe we just have to squeeze harder. Ari grabs a handful of snow in his mitts and starts squeezing it with all his might. ArI ( CONT’D ) RRRRRRRR . Come on snowball, let me make you. RRRRRRR ! Ari’s really getting into it, Olive and Elinor watch him for a beat. OlIVE Is it working? ARI (with effort) RRRRrrrr . I...think...soo .... Ari opens his mitts, the snow just falls to the ground. ElINOR Maybe this snow just isn’t good for making snowballs. OlIVE I wonder if it’s good for snow castles. Olive picks up her bucket and fills it up, she’s about to upend it when... ArI Wait! I have an idea! Ari flies up to the top of the snowman. ArI ( CONT’D ) Hand me the bucket,please . Olive hands Ari the bucket and he upends it on the top of the snow-friend. The snow just rolls off. Ari ( CONT’D ) I thought we could make a snow-castle head... but, nope. OLIVE Hmmm . Maybe if I pack the snow down a little more. Hand me the bucket, please, Ari. Ari hands Olive her bucket, Olive fills it, but just at that moment Olive’s Mom calls from the front door. OlIVE’S MOM Hey kids, who’s ready for some hot chocolate? ArI <GASP> Hot chocolate! OlIVE Coming Mom!! The kids run to the house <NOTE: Olive keeps her bucket>. As they go in, Elinor looks back one more time, still puzzled. 5. INT. OLIVE’S HOUSE (ENTRANCE) – DAY Olive, Ari and Elinor enter. <NOTE: Olive bucket is filled past the brim with fluffy snow>. ElINOR (laughing) Uhhh , Olive. You still have the bucket of snow. OlIVE Yeah, I brought it in so we could keep observing it. ElINOR Good thinking. (to the bucket) Hey little bucket of snow, would you like to see Olive’s house? ArI I wonder if buckets of snow like hot chocolate? 6. INT. Olive’s LIving Room - day Olive’s Mom has bundled the kids in blankets on the couch, and they each hold a mug of hot chocolate. The bucket of snow is nestled between Ari and Olive, obscured by a blanket. Olive’s Mom is tending the fire. Elinor Oooh, this is cozy. OlIVE Thanks, Mom! OLIVE’S mOM You’re welcome kids. It IS really cold out there. Olive’s Mom puts a log on the fire and closes the door to the wood stove. Then she goes off. ElINOR I wonder why the snow outside didn’t stick together today? Ari I dunno . What do you say, bucket of snow? Ari moves the blanket. ANGLE ON: the bucket of snow, the snow is now just barely poking over the rim. ARI ( CONT’D ) It doesn’t say much. OliVE Well, I’m glad we’re inside - where it’s nice and toasty, right bucket of snow? (she glances at the bucket) Uh-oh. Something's happening to the snow. Look! SCIENCE ECU: The kids examine the snow, now just below the rim of the bucket. It has a small puddle in the middle. ELINOR It does look different. Ari Yeah, it looks WATERY. He dips his finger in the water. ELINOR That’s sooo interesting. We need MORE observations! The kids take the bucket and put it on the floor. Elinor touches the snow. Elinor ( CONT’D ) It feels different too - it’s wet and slushy. Olive It's more like the snow from yesterday. Wait a minute... Olive uses her trunk to make a snowball. ELINOR (excited) It works! You can make a snowball now! OlIVE Yep. THIS snow sticks together and doesn't crumble. She tosses the snowball to Ari, who fumbles it a few times before he catches it. ArI Whoa-whoooa-WHOAA ! (he finally catches it) Finally! A snowball! Science ECU of snowball. OliVE But why did the snow change? It used to be fluffy, but NOW it’s slushy. Ari All we did was bring it into the house. ELINOR (thinking) Hmmmmmm . Wait a minute... (figures it out) It’s much warmer inside the house. Maybe fluffy snow turns slushy and sticky when it warms up. At this moment Olive’s Mom comes in to check on them. She overhears the conversation. OlIVE’S Mom You’re right, Elinor. That’s because snow melts when it gets warm. ELINOR THAT’S what makes it slushy. OlIVE And sticky! So we can make things... Ari ...like snowballs! Ari holds up the dripping snowball. OLIVE’S MOM Nice observing, scientists. Now be careful not to get slushy snow on the couch, please. Ari Right. Ari throws the snowball back into the bucket. Olive’s Mom finishes tending to the fire and heads for the door. Olive realizes something. olive Wait, I think I know why the snow is different today from yesterday. It's a lot colder outside today. elinor Yeah... Yesterday was warmer, so the snow was slushier and stickier. olive But today it's colder, so the snow stays fluffy and crumbly. That’s it! ARi We figured out the snow mystery! YUSSS ! The kids high five. ELINOR That explains why the snow is different, but... how are we going to finish our snow giant? OLIVE The snow outside won’t stick together. It’s too COLD! Ari We need to warm up the snow outside. But, how? ELINOR Hmmm .... The kids think for a moment. Ari looks at the bucket. ARI What do YOU think, bucket of snow? Any ideas? Elinor looks at the bucket and has an idea. ELINOR Hmmmmm . <GASP> I’ve got it!! If we can’t warm up the snow outside, we’ll warm it up in here..! OlIVE (catching on) We can bring the snow inside to warm it up! Ari And then take it outside to BUILD! Snow Giant, get ready for your HEAD! BUCKET BRIGADE MONTAGE: The kids form a snow bucket brigade. We start outside as Ari scoops up a bucket of powdery cold snow. He runs it over to the house where Elinor is waiting at the door with an empty bucket. Elinor hands Ari the empty bucket, freeing her hands, and then Ari hands Elinor the new cold snow bucket. Ari runs back out and Elinor runs inside. Inside, Elinor brings the bucket of cold snow to Olive, who swaps it for a bucket of somewhat melted snow. Elinor runs off and Olive takes the cold snow and puts it near (but not too near) the fire. ELINOR/ARi/olive (singing) Elinor: Yesterday was warm, And the snow could really stick Olive: Today it is colder and It doesn’t stick a bit. Ari: We’ll bring the snow inside, Where it’s nice and toasty, then - Elinor: We’ll wait for it to melt a bit, then take it out again ANGLE ON: The snow melting in the bucket. WIDEN TO REVEAL: Olive is watching, she grabs the bucket and runs over to Elinor, who swaps the slushy snow bucket for a bucket of fluffy cold snow. Olive runs back, and we follow Elinor as she goes outside. Outside the door, she exchanges the slushy bucket with Ari, who gives her a new bucket of cold snow. We follow Ari as he runs out and dumps the slushy snow bucket unto a pile near the snow giant. Then he scoops up another bucketful of fluffy snow and we repeat the cycle. ALL: Warm up the snow! Warm up the snow! Make the snow sticky And we’re good to go! When snow is cold it’s fluffy, When it’s warm it’s slushy, We can build anything When we warm up the snow. SOON: Ari and Elinor are standing beside a good-sized pile of melty snow (maybe its a little bluer). Olive runs out in full winter gear, she scoops up a snowball - it works! Elinor takes it, puts it down and starts rolling, as the snowball gets bigger Ari and Olive join in. Elinor: Our Snow Friend isn’t finished We have to make his head! Olive: So if we can’t use cold, cold snow, We’ll warm it up instead. ARI: When the snow gets wet. We'll put it on our Friend ELINOR: We'll make a good snowball And use it for his head! Elinor lifts the snowball up to Olive who uses her trunk to lift it higher to Ari who’s standing on the second ball supporting the head in place . ALL: Warm up the snow! Warm up the snow! We can build anything When we warm up the snow! END MONTAGE: 7. EXT. OlIVE'S FRONT YARD – DAY The kids are admiring their creation (Note: He doesn’t have a face yet). <SFX: WOW WALLA> Olive Now that’s what I call a GIANT snow giant. ElINOR We figured out how to make him a giant head - by warming up the snow! ArI Now he’s so big he could crush cars and houses and mountains!! (he starts stomping around) BOOOM! BOOM!!! BOOM!! BOOM! Elinor and Olive look at each other and smile. ELINOR Uh, Ari, our Snow Giant would never do that. ARI Why not? OlIVE He’s friendly! She stretches up her trunk and draws eyes and a big smile. Ari shrugs. ArI Oh! O.k. That works too. Ari flutters up and puts the bucket on the Snow Friend’s head. ArI (CONT’D) How’s it going, giant friendly Snow Friend. ANGLE ON: He perches on it’s shoulder and gives the Snow Friend a hug. ARI (CONT’D) Awww. I think he really likes me. Elinor and Olive <SFX: LAUGH> IRIS OUT, THE END
