"Good first draft My one big note would be to include the Bullfrog in the story - He appears a few times and I expected him to also be an example of 'animals having different bodies that let them do different things'. When Elinor comes to understand this (Line 78) would it not be better to have more than one example and not just the hummingbird? The Bullfrog is shown hoping (first to change directions to show Elinor where the ball went into the bushes and then again to jump off the log to quickly dodging the ball from hitting it. It seems odd that the opportunity is missed to not include it in the the learned observation. We can have the Bullfrog on the log again while the kids are speaking with Ms.Mole as Elinor also observes how it has legs that are strong for hopping/jumping. etc. Then when she see the Bullfrog hop again in line 90 - 'Another great Hop!...wait' - as she looks down to her feet and does a little bounce a few times. (to all) The goalie can use their hands, but everyone else has to use the other parts of their body - like their FEET! Ms. Mole walks up to a nearby ball and does some super duper fancy footwork with it. Then Ms. Mole kicks the ball! It flies over the surprised kids’s heads-- --bounces off a nearby tree - --and returns to Ms. Mole as if that was her intention. The kids are wowed. Kids Whoooaaaa... Ari (aside, to Olive ) That was... AMAZING! Ms. Mole strolls up to the various balls she poured out of the bag . Suggest moving this line up to the end of line 11. It feels a little out of place here -- would work better coming after Ms. Mole describes the different roles on the field. Ms. Mole But the most important thing is to just have fun and do your best. Remember, e veryone is good at different things ! One by one, Ms. Mole gently kick-passes the balls around to the various kids, who run up and start playing with the balls. She then passes one to Ari. ARI Ooh ! Excited, Ari does a quick swoop through the air and instinctively grabs the ball with his hands before landing back on the grass. Ms. Mole Ah-ah..! Remember, Ari. No hands. Ari looks at the ball in his hands. Shocked to realize that he’s holding it, he drops it like a hot potato! Ari Ahh! How did that get there? Sorry! Ms. Mole passes the last ball to Elinor, and she gleefully goes after it. Olive and Elinor start VERY GENTLY kick-rolling the ball to each other. ElINOR Here ya go Olive ! OLIVE Right back ‘atcha, Elinor. ELINOR Ari? Elinor passes the ball to Ari. Ari O k , watch THIS move! He winds up to kick the ball and connects, slipping at the same moment, causing him to do a little backflip. ARI Whoa! Olive help s Ari up. OLIVE <giggles> Maybe not that move. ArI Thanks, Olive . Elinor bops the ball over to them again and they continue playing. At that moment, Ms. Mole calls them in. Ms. Mole has moved a bunch of the soccer balls into a bunch at mid-field. The other kids are gathered nearby, ready for her next instruction. This is slightly confusing because it seems like the kids are practicing already – maybe Ms. Mole can say something more specific like, “Okay, are you ready to try some fun soccer moves?” or something that fits with what they do next. Ms. Mole Okay, who’s ready to practice? we should note who says what for our records, line count and animation Kids I am!/Me!/I’m ready!/etc. Elinor, arriving at the sideline, drop-rolls the ball over to Ms. Mole, then raises hand up, excitedly. Elinor Me too! Ari And me! Ms. MOLE Splendid! Now, soccer i s all about moving fast, so first, let’s do some running... The kids line up. a bit odd that Olive will run/practice soccer while holding her book. we canhave her with her satchel and she takes it out when needed Ms. Mole Ready?... Go! The kids start racing across the field, full sprint. Elinor, Olive (still holding the book) and Ari run as fast as they can , and are having fun running -- but to their surprise, Silas Cheetah blows past them (he's really fast!). The trio are amazed. Elinor/ Olive /ari WOW! At the NET at the other end of the field, Silas arrives first, followed a long beat after by the other classmates, then Elinor, Olive , and Ari. Ari looks winded but tries not to show it. ElinoR Silas! You’re really fast! SILAS Thanks, Elinor! Ari (panting) Whoo! That was a lot of r unning! I usually fly when I’m in a hurry. Olive (consulting the rule book) Hmm, there’s nothing in the rules that say you can’t fly, Ari . Ari perks up. Ms. MOLE (calling) Okay! Come on back! The kids start racing back, Ari bringing up the rear. Finally, he stops, shrugs, and flies instead. WIPE TO: 2 . EXT. SOCCER FIELD BORDERING FOREST - drills montage Ms. Mole has the kids gathered around her. The soccer balls are spaced in intervals along the mid-field line. - goat twins - its noted that they use their hind legs - our characters all stand up and run/kick with their back two legs. we're also saying they can't touch the ball with their hands - assuming their front legs are their arms. Is their some specific action you're thinking of when you're making this note? Ms. Mole Should we work in some supporting dialog here? Wondering if the visuals alone will be clear for the audience. Now let’s practice playing with the ball in different ways. SERIES OF SHOTS - Ms. Mole demonstrates actions she wants the kids to try, then one by one, we see various kids try them: ON A SOCCER BALL - being dribbled forward by a pair of feet... which we reveal are Mrs. Mole’s. She’s moving the ball along the field, keeping it just ahead of her. She stops, turns back to face the kids, then passes the ball back to them . Elinor dribbles the ball ahead of her with some difficulty , then tries to pass the ball to Olive, but she doesn’t kick it quite right and it goes way to the side . Mary, one of the goat twins, stops the ball. She does a little fancy footwork, then turns her body away from Elinor and Olive. She looks back and uses her hind legs to kick the ball up perfectly. The ball does a graceful arc and lands and rolls exactly where Elinor is. Elinor and Olive are super impressed . again note about using their hind legs Elinor/ Olive Can Elinor and Olive be a little more specific -- what are the goat twins good at? Wow !/ Mary and Liv are really good at that! They look on and see the twins expertly pass the ball back and forth using their hind legs. It’s Ari’s turn. He tries to dribble the ball but stumbles . ArI Whoa, whoa! He trips and end s up with the ball in his hands again. MS. MOLE (calling good-naturedly) Arrrriiii! Remember, no hands! Ari smiles sheepishly, puts the ball down, and resumes his awkward dribbling. WIPE TO: ON A SOCCER BALL, stationary on the ground. Ms. MOLE Now let’s see how far you can kick the ball! WIDER to see Ms. Mole KICK it, sending the ball OS. She gestures back to the kids for them to go. Elinor kicks her ball. It goes a moderate distance. Olive kicks her ball. It goes farther than Elinor’s. Ari kicks his ball. It goes off at an angle, nearly missing some of the other kids . Ari reacts sheepishly to his mistargeted kick. Ari Sorry! Sally Beaver steps up to her ball. She thinks about it for a second. Then she has an idea. Instead of kicking it with her foot, she winds up and with a twist of her body, she whacks the ball with her big tail - hard! The ball goes REALLY far, all the way into the net at the other end! Elinor, Olive , and Ari are awed. would we have Elinor go again, especially since not all the kids have had a try yet? ElINOR/ OLIVE /ARI Might be good to say something like, “Your tail is really strong” or something that points out her body part and what it could do. Ooooooooh! Great kick, Sally! /Wow!/That was amazing! Sally gives an ‘aw shucks’ reaction. Elinor tries again with another ball, but her kick doesn’t send the ball nearly as far. WIPE TO: ON A SOCCER BALL - being BOUNCED lightly on a KNEE. REVEAL that Ms. Mole is now keeping the ball up with her knees. ON: Elinor, Ari, and the other kids, all trying to do it. Each one of them struggles amusingly to do it and they all lose their ball quickly. Ari Whoa, this is hard! Elinor struggles to do it, but keeps trying happily. Olive meanwhile, is holding a ball and looking at her leg. She bends a knee and realizes this is going to be difficult for her. She thinks about it for a second, then has a flash of an idea. She consults her book and smiles. Back on Elinor trying, she hears some steady ball bouncing and looks over to Olive, who is juggling the ball with her trunk -- and she’s doing it expertly! Ari looks surprised . Ari Are you allowed to do that? Olive continues bopping the ball up with her trunk while she opens a page in the rule book with her hands. Olive You can use anything except your hands, Ari! So: yes! Olive beams as she keeps juggling the ball with her trunk. this action of trying to grab the ball with his wings may look visually awkward. Also, what was he hoping he can do with them? Olive is using her trunk to dribble, Sally her tail to kick...he still cant carry the ball even if it is with his wings Ari Wow... Who knew Olive had a ‘nose’ for soccer! Suddenly, Ari has an idea, too. He looks down at his wings and is about to grab the ball with them when... Why do wings count as hands while Olive’s trunk and Sally Beaver's tail don’t? We're OK with it but kids might ask. Maybe its in the rule book? Or maybe it's because Ari's wings are "attached" to hands? Ms. MOLE Ah-ah, Ari! Wings count as hands! ARI Aww ... ANGLE ON: Ari and Elinor watch their friend with admiration. elinor (giggling) Go OLIVE ! Olive happily waves. Elinor continues to try somewhat unsuccessfully. Ms. Mole walks over and gathers the kids again. should we not eliminate this line? she says to take a break and yet the other kids are still playing. She also comes over to Ari and Elinor to ask whats the matter when they're only sitting taking a break as she asked them to do. Plus pg 9 - the others are all still continuing to practice as Elinor points out Ms. MOLE Ok , let’s take a break and then... we’ll play a game! All kidS Yay!/ Whoo hoo ! Elinor, a little winded from trying to juggle the ball (and not quite succeeding), goes to sit in the log bench, joined by Ari. Ari Phew! Training to be a super sensational soccer star is hard work! Elinor looks over at her friends playing and doing really well. Elinor Yeah... She smiles, but doesn’t quite look like her usual perky self. Ms. Mole sees them from the field and comes over to them. Ms. Mole What’s the matter, soccer stars? Elinor <sigh> I’m really excited about playing, Ms. Mole... but I don’t know what I’m good at. MS. MOLE Hmmm ... Ms. Mole thinks about it for a beat, then seems to have an idea. Ms. MOLE What do you mean by that, Elinor? elinor Well... QUICK CUTAWAYS of the other kids doing what we’ve seen them do well up to this point, as Elinor mentions them . As she begins to talk, she perks up, happy to be talking about things she knows and noticed. SILAS - continuing to run super-fast, around other classmates on the field. Will we have our Silas character designed with extra long legs? otherwise i suggest we can switch this to extra strong legs - although we use 'string' for the goat twins' Elinor (o.s.) Silas is a really good runner. He’s a cheetah, and cheetahs have extra long legs that help them run fast. Silas stops and we can see he has slightly longer, runner legs. GOAT TWINS - dribbling and passing the ball between them across the grass. elinor (o.s.) Mary and Liv are really good at passing the ball. That’s because goats have really strong legs they use for climbing and kicking. We see Mary using her hind leg to make a backwards kick. SALLY - hitting a ball with her tail and sending it flying. Elinor (o.s.) And Sally is really good at kicking the ball using her tail. Beavers have really big tails that help them swim and slap the water. We see Sally wiggle her tail proudly. OLIVE - bouncing the ball above her head with her trunk. tap things with' will our audience understand why that means? elinor (o.s.) And Olive is really good at bouncing the ball using her trunk. Elephants have long trunks that they can move in all kinds of ways to grab and tap things with. BACK ON THE BENCH - Elinor and Ari continue facing Ms. Mole. ari Wow! I hadn’t noticed all of that before. I wish I had a trunk! ( mimicking a trumpet) Tooot ! ELINOR Everyone is good at something, but what am I good at, Ms. Mole? Elinor shrugs and looks puzzled. Ms. Mole takes it all in. Ms. Mole Well, Elinor, I think you ARE really good at something. Elinor perks up. ELINOR Really? MS. MOLE Yes, Elinor! You are really good at NOTICING THINGS! Not everyone sees all the little things that you do! does this sound too old for our characters? ARI Yeah, you’re a sensational noticing super star, Elinor! EliNOR (thinks about it for a beat) I guess I am... But... is that good for soccer? Ms. MOLE Of course it is! Playing is also about helping others. For example, I bet you could tell us what Ari is good at in soccer. Maybe “Oh I don’t think I’m good at anything in soccer.” We may also want to think about Ari echoing Elinor's earlier mentions of not being good at anything -- he feels very quiet between lines 54 and 64, even though up until this point in the story, he's the one who's struggled on the field more visibly than Elinor has. Ari Oh, I don’t think I’m good at it. Elinor thinks about it for a beat. ELINOR Well, Ari... your wings are really wide. And you can fly up really high. And I noticed that you are really good at grabbing the ball with your hands. hahaha ARI Yeah, it’s a problem. ELINOR No, don’t you see? I think you’d be really good at being the goalie! Goalies can grab the ball with their hands! Ms. MOLE And wings! ARI Hey, I like that! Should we better connect this to their physical attributes? Maybe “Everyone is different. And everyone is good at different things!” Something to that affect. Maybe Sara can help. It would be nice to be explicit about this idea before they get into supporting it with the song. Ms. MOLE See, Elinor? Everyone is good at different things. Elinor That is SO interesting! We need more observations! Elinor runs from the bench onto the field, followed by Ari and Ms. Mole. 3 . EXT. SOCCER FIELD BORDERING FOREST - SONG SEQUENCE - CONT. SERIES OF SHOTS - While they sing, they race onto the field to observe the kids doing soccer drills, with an emphasis on seeing what each of their bodies allow them to do well. In addition to Silas and Sally, we focus on Tito’s nimble dribbling and Olive ’s deft ball-handling with her trunk. Elinor (singing) Some animals are really tall , And others are really quick! Ari (singing) Some animals are really small, And some can really kick! He can however if he's goalie but only if hes in the crease of the NET. He cant use his hands on the feild. We should maybe have tito's kick going for the net and Ari makes a terrific save using his hands or wings. ELINOR Uh-oh.... Suddenly, Ari swoops over there to deftly stop the ball with an extended bat wing. SALLY Whew! Thanks Ari! Ari You’re welcome Sally !
