The animal 'learning' piece is super interesting as an adult. i think preschoolers will take away that some birds talk and can be taught words. 1. EXT PARK -- DAY Very interesting - I did a rough timing and it'll be tight to fit in 1:30. As I guess the tempo of the song. But its a lot of information that'll need to be sung clearly so I suggest trying to cute a few lines - perhaps in the dialogue upfront to shorten Open on SENOR TAPIR in the park of Animal Town, sitting on a tree stump at the edge of a pond. There are three different GUITARS next to him, one RED and two BLUE ones. One blue guitar is bigger than the other one. A group of kids sit at his feet, including ELINOR, ARI and OLIVE. We think this interstitial has a lot of potential and would be interesting to kids, though we have concerns about how much information is packed in and what you'd like the core takeaway to be. We wondered, is the takeaway that some birds can communicate with words like we do? Or is it that some birds are smart and can think like us which we know because they can talk and show us what they know? The first message is probably the simplest for our audience. One is about a bird that can answer questions (the thinking that birds can do) and the other is about birds ability to talk. Sara touches on this in her first note – I think that it might be confusing to try to cover both ideas. Kids will probably be most interested in the idea that birds can talk like we do and know words. SENOR TAPIR Those questions are easy for you. But did you know that some birds can answer those questions too? Ari Really? A bird that talks? We think it would be good to mention that Irene Pepperburg is a scientist, either in the song when she’s first mentioned, or in the leadup to it. You could reframe this line as: Yes! I have a song about a scientist who taught her bird 100 words! SENOR TAPIR Yes! I have a song about a bird that knew over 100 words! Tapir picks up the bigger blue guitar, starts to <MFX: STRUM> and sings. After a line or two, we transition to a simpler style of animation that describes what he is singing. Maybe could try something more along the lines of, “She knew parrots who could tweet and squawk, but could she teach one to think and talk?” SENOR TAPIR (CONT’D) (singing) Irene Pepperburg wanted to see, “Is a parrot smart enough to talk to me?” She knew parrots could copy some words, but could she teach it to TALK to her? She got a grey parrot from the pet store, and invented a way to teach him more! He said “YUMMY BREAD.” - be literal here kids will think the parrot got the bread wrong because cake and bread arent the same thing SENOR TAPIR (CONT’D) I agree with Sara - we are showing that the Bird is intelligent - so this would seem like he's mistaken “MORE!” Again this is focused on both talking and thinking (solving puzzles) and the relationship between them. It would help to simplify this by choosing if the focus should be primarily on the fact that some birds can talk like we do, or that the bird can think about things like we do (and use words to show us what it knows). Irene gives him another treat and continues to work with Alex, showing him different colored blocks, numbers, pieces of paper, etc. We see a close up of Alex’s face and eyes. So she said, Hey there Alex, let’s get you talkin’ , answering questions with a hundred words. Hey there Alex, let’s see you thinkin’, solving puzzles like a brainy, bright bird.
